4.0 out of 5 stars She has quite good vocals.
Seriously, I must say that I'm not a massive fan of Samantha Cole, but after listening to "Without You", I changed my mind a little. She has quite good vocals and her expressions in her songs are quite good as well. The other tracks from this album are rather good as well, like "Shadow of Love" and "You Light Up My Life". This review is from: Samantha Cole (Audio CD)
Samantha Cole's first (and as yet last) album was one of those countless albums specially engineered for the mainstream, but never had much to show for it.. eventually falling flat in the charts and banished to the annals of mainstream mediocrity. One only needs to look at the seven producers on board including super-producers Nile Rodgers and David Foster, Diane Warren, Jon-John (who had worked with Diana Ross around this time), Richard Marx, Carl Sturken, Evan Rogers and Jimmy Harry (whew!)... Unfortunately, despite (or because of) all the producers on board, many of the songs end up sounding fairly generic and anonymous (even for MOR standards). Case in point: yet another pointless cover of "You Light Up My Life"..yuck.

In addition, much of the songs sound astonishingly dated when compared to other records released around this time, especially some of the more uptempo R&B numbers (esp. "Sweet Sweet Surrender"..which is quite painful, really). Some of the best tracks include the first single "Without You", the Richard Marx duet "Surrender To Me" and "I'm Right Here" all of which are produced by David Foster and/or Richard Marx. Although fairly typical in it's David Foster MOR schlock value, at least it's well-crafted and well performed MOR schlock, and easily the best of this bunch... Nile Rodgers, one of my favorite producers, contributes a couple of the more uptempo numbers, but still doesn't seem to live up to his usual standard on this record.. "What You Do To Me" comes close, but not quite. Although Cole has a fine voice, the early Whitney/Mariah AC/MOR approach on this album fails. Cole may have the vocal ability, but hardly the vocal presence of either, nor the distinctive material to get noticed.. good luck to her on a follow-up, if it's ever to come..

1.0 out of 5 stars Quite disappointed, March 1, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Samantha Cole (Audio CD)
The songs on the cd are not memorable. She has very weak and poor singing skills. (You can hear some out of tune notes and cracking.) I was hoping for some expressive music (like Mariah Carey) but found dull music and not very much talent. Please don't buy this album, it's really not worth your money. I wish I hadn't listen to her album, I was quite disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars A VERY GENERIC SOUND, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Samantha Cole (Audio CD)
This artist has a very generic, almost created sound, Its a little too obvious that her record company pigeonholed her into a "Mariah" Wannabe. I think its funny because if you read the reviews that are favorable toawrds this performer, they all seem to have the exact same wording (PERHAPS SAMANTHA IS WRITING REVIEWS ON HERSELF!!!!) It seems that way or perhaps a family member because honestly, from what I have heard of her "music", she wouldn't get past the first round in American Idol. I hear she's big in Germany, but then again, so is David Hasselhoff (Sp?). It's obvious that this woman is doing something to boost her career but it certainly isn't singing. Have you seen the website? It looks like a porn star's site. I really find the review stating that they prefer Samantha Cole over "The Screaming Mariah Carey" (which I'm sure is Samantha or a family member) hysterical. MARIAH CAREY HAS BROKEN RECORDS ACROSS THE BOARD AND HAD MORE #1 HITS THAN ANY FEMALE EVER, SHE CAN SING ANY RANGE OF MUSIC, SHE WRITES HER OWN MUSIC AND ALTHOUGH SHE'S A LITTLE FRUITY AT TIMES, SHE IS THE MOST TALENTED FEMALE ARTIST OF OUR TIME. SOMEONE NEEDS TO CLEAN OUT THEIR EARS!

2.0 out of 5 stars She sounds like she's trying hard to imitate Mariah CArey., June 21, 1998

I saw her perform live in a concert and she really has no talent. It shows on her album. Her weak voice was masked by a lot of background instrumentation. Please don't buy this.

She has quite good vocals and her expressions in her songs are quite good as well. The other tracks from this album are rather good as well, like "Shadow of Love" and "You Light Up My Life". Although she may sound a little like Mariah Carey, these two singers have different personalities altogether. It's worth a buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tunes are dull and not memorable, June 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Samantha Cole (Audio CD)
Eh, not much to say about this album in a positive sense. Screeching voice, twittering on the edge of cracking, and just plain old horrible. Bad melodies, tunes are dull and not memorable. The songs are simple, I don't know what posessed me to buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Voice, June 19, 2000

She has one of the best voices I have ever heard. Her voice makes you feel the music. This album is worth buying, just on her vocal talent alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sings MUCH better than screamer Mariah Carey!, January 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Samantha Cole (Audio CD)
She has one of the most amazing voices I have heard in a long time. I think her music is great! She has such a pure quality to her voice because singing comes so naturally to her. Better than ANY Mariah record I have ever heard. Samantha Cole is a great artist, hope she stays around for awhile.
