4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, May 19, 2003
This review is from: Samantha's Surprise (American Girl) (Paperback)
This is another in the American Girls series about Samantha Parkington, a nine-year-old orphan girl living with her grandmother in the America of 1904. In this book, Samantha is all excited, preparing for the coming Christmas. But, when the family finds out that Samantha's Uncle Gard is bringing his girlfriend Cornelia to visit (a serious matter back then), the whole household is turned upside down, along with Samantha's plans. Samantha begins to resent Cornelia, but before Christmas Day arrives, she might just learn a lesson.

The final chapter of this book is a highly informative look at Christmas in 1904 America. Also, I must say that I did enjoy the wonderful illustrations provided by Nancy Niles and R. Grace.

This is another very good American Girls book. Unlike the other Samantha books that my daughter and I have read, this one does not set out to show any of the less savory details of life in 1904 America, but it is nonetheless and enjoyable book with a nice lesson. My daughter and I both enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars I think this is a great book., July 23, 1999
By A Customer
Not the best of all the Samantha books, but really great. Samantha is so excited about Christmas and preparing for the holidays. Her plans are foiled when her Uncle Gard announces he is bringing his girlfriend Cornelia home for Christmas. Samantha wants to be nothing but hostile towards her, but as she gets to know her she likes her more and more. A great story about family, people, and the Christmas spirit.

A Kid's Review

I thought this book would be great for girls especially if you like the holidays. Samantha lives with her wealthy grandmother. It is also a great book if you love happy endings and sad beginnings.

I highly recommend this book. My eight year old granddaughter and I read this book together. She loved it. The story lets children know what life was like in the early 1900's. Entirely wholesome and the themes of dealing with prejudice, caring and sharing are great!

4.0 out of 5 stars good characters / predictiable plot, April 26, 2008
My daughter is a huge Samantha fan and we enjoy reading the American Girl books together. This story is professionally crafted, with strong vocabulary, a good mix of dialog and narrative, and nice illustrations. Samantha is looking forward to a christmas party, but with the arrival of the mysterious Cornelia, her plans appear to be wrecked. Just when Samantha believes that she is going to have the worst Christmas ever, things break her way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Samantha's Surprise, November 16, 2006
A Kid's Review
Samantha's Surprise is about a girl named Samantha that got a very special surprise from someone she loves. 12 weeks before Christmas, Samantha's best friend,Ida, gave her an invitation to her Christmas party. Then Ida and Sam,Samantha, went to the toy shop. Sam stared into the shop's window admiring the beautiful Nutcracker doll. Later on Sam went to her house and tried on the new dress Granmary's semstress,Jessie, made for her. Then Sam asked Grandmary if she could go to Ida's party, but she can't because Sam's uncle is bringing his girlfriend so they have to meet Cornelia properly on their first meet. Once Cornelia and Uncle Gard got there and it ends up that Sam,Cornelia, and Uncle Grad had a wondreful time instead of having a horrible time as Sam thought it might be. On Christmas, Sam got the Nutcracker doll she wanted and everyone loved Sam's gifts she gave. Especialy Cornelia. Sam had a wonderful Christmas after all.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Fun on Christmas, May 9, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Samantha's Surprise (American Girl) (Paperback)
This book is very fascinating. Samantha wants a certain doll for Christmas, the doll is beautiful, she wears a pink lacy dress, has brown hair, and holds a tiny nutcracker in her arms. Samantha's Uncle Gard is bringing his fiance', Cornilia for Christmas. Samantha has made Christmas decorations for GrandMary's house and she's been invited to her friend Ida Dean's Christmas party. Then Samantha finds out Cornilia is coming and evewrything has to be perfect so Samantha can't put up her decorations or go to Ida Dean's Christmas party. Samantha thinks that Cornilia will be a boring person, but soon finds out she may be wrong.
In the back of the book there's a little section called "Peek into the Past" and it can teach you about Christmas in 1904.
I would recommend this book for three reasons; its very interesting, exciting and wonderful. "Samantha's Surprise" is a great book
