5.0 out of 5 stars Become an expert on Linux and Unix intregration with Windows, April 24, 2000

Jonathan Braude (Durban, South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samba Black Book: A Hands-on Reference for Integrating Linux and NT Using Samba (Paperback)
This book is highly recommended and worth every cent of its purchase price - it'll pay for itself in the first Samba installation you do! I'd venture to say it's all you'll need to become an expert on using Samba to integrate Unix, Linux and Windows servers and clients.

It has only recently (this year) been published, and covers all the latest info you need, with just about all relevant software required included on the accompanying CD. You can either read this book from cover-to-cover, or just skim through the index for the particular setup you need, then go straight to the relevant chapter for the details. Every file required for a particular situation is covered line-by-line, with simple but comprehensive explanations for each step of the way.

The reason I bought this book is that one of my customers, who currently uses a small NT4-based network with Win95/98 clients, wants to expand to a 25 user system in the near future. He had heard about Linux and asked about a lower cost alternative to NT. My current Linux books do not discuss Samba in enough detail, and coming from a Windows/NT background, I searched Amazon for a comprehensive coverage of Samba. Well, this excellent book has it all, and I now feel in a position to competently advise him to follow the Linux / Samba route, and then set it all up for him :-). Get this book, it's really worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars roadmap to using Samba, June 15, 2000
This review is from: Samba Black Book: A Hands-on Reference for Integrating Linux and NT Using Samba (Paperback)
I have made the Chinese translation of this book from Taiwan. This is an excellent practical reference about Samba. Not only common usages for providing file and printing services, but also advanced networking topics for administrations and operations. I do not think this is a fundamental book for people who appear to be freshmen on UNIX/Linux and NT, but experienced system administrators or network engineers. However, the words, sometimes, from this book is a little victorian, I have sufferred that for several statements scatterred all over many chapters. Recently, I read Emma and Homles, I hope I could get used to it:-).

In short, if you need a Samba book, buy it right now!

2.0 out of 5 stars Why do I need so much detail about networking?, July 30, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samba Black Book: A Hands-on Reference for Integrating Linux and NT Using Samba (Paperback)
If you are looking to buy a book like this, I would suppose that you know a little about networking. This book spends far too much time teaching what you should already know about networking. There are other books and free how-to's that are specific to networking . I am still searching for a concise book that tells me exactly what I need to know about Samba, not an "N+ training" manual. I got so tired of trying to glean out the Samba information I quit reading and gave up. Why do so many Linux authors feel they have to tell the history of Linux again, and again, and again, and.......?
