4.0 out of 5 stars Samba / Bossa Nova for the new century, April 1, 2002
This review is from: Samba Bossa Nova (Audio CD)
Like a breath of fresh air in the stale world, this CD re-creates the warmth of feeling of the Jobim/Bonfa/Gilberto/de Moraes Samba / Bossa Nova songs of the mid sixties. The liner notes say "the children of the Bossa Nova generation are also coming of age and while many originally rebelled against their parents' music, they are now returning to it to carry the torch of the Bossa Nova style". Indeed, there is a song by the son and grandson of Jobim on this sunny CD.

And it has the authentic feel. Songs each by a different performer, but well chosen. The best song, for my money, is Rosa Passos' lyric version of the Ari Barroso song "E Luxo So." This is the song Stan Getz made a memorable version of on "Jazz Samba", the spectacular album that started it all. This song never fails to improve my mood and put a smile on my face whenever I hear it.

There is more Carnival polyrhythyms here than Bossa Nova had originally, which makes it all the more authentic. Pleasant music from beginning to end. Along with Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo", and Joao Gilberto's "Voz e Violao" of two years ago, this music breathes new life into an old form.

Tom Jobim (and Stan Getz) must be proud.

I bought this CD merely by chance and I am quite surprised and delighted with it! Most of the songs in this interesting collection are simply outstanding!

It was through this album that I came to know some really great Brazilian artists that I wouldn't have discovered otherwise: the fantastic "Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum" (track #1), Caetano Veloso's son "Moreno Veloso +2" (track #5) and especially the gorgeous voice and style of Rosa Passos (track #9)!!! To name just a few!!!

This is really a very enjoyable album, a great companion to the classics from Veloso, Jobim, Gilberto, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, January 5, 2003

This review is from: Samba Bossa Nova (Audio CD)
While there seem to be a ton of Brazilian compilations on the market these days, this is simply one of the best. Every song is fabulous, catchy, and well-produced. The opening track is a new version of one of those classic bossa novas from Black Orpheus. I seem to hear it all the time when I pop into bookstores and cafes these days. It is so good, that I frequently almost embarrass myself by singing along. It is that captivating. The sambas are equally infectious. This CD is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem, June 2, 2005
This review is from: Samba Bossa Nova (Audio CD)
This extraordinary music is not easy to categorize. On the one hand this music is for lying in a hammock for two on a warm summer evening in Rio sipping a couple caipirinhas and watching the sunset. But on the other hand this is definitely not fluffy background music. This is music with deep roots. The music is soft and relaxing in the palm tree and summer breezes modality, yet at the same time it is also mature, detailed and thought-provoking. And even though the songs on this album are thoroughly unified by a distinct style, so they are also completely individual and distinct. There is no filler here. This is the good stuff. If you are thinking of buying an album from the world of Samba and Bossa Nova, this one will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet set of new Brazilian music, March 6, 2007
This review is from: Samba Bossa Nova (Audio CD)
The level of quality in Putumayo's world music samplers has been steadily rising over the last few years. The label scores another hit with this excellent collection of sleek modern balladeers and Brazilian pop innovators... Included are Da Lata, Rossa Passos, Jussara Silveira, Rita Ribero, and my personal hero, Moreno Veloso (the son of the great Caetano Veloso). There are also several less well known artists on here, but the level of quality is consistently very high. This is a really nice, really listenable album... Highly recommended for anyone who wants to check out some more recent Brazilian material. (This review originally posted in 2002)

I've had this CD for about a year now and still have not gotten tired of it. It's the best Brazilian compilation CD I own. Highly recommended! You'll never get tired of listening and will definitely get you grooving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, November 5, 2005
This review is from: Samba Bossa Nova (Audio CD)
Finally a Samba/Bossa Nova CD that holds true to the classic roots of Bossa Nova and Samba. From the opening song to the end the sweet scents of Brazil come through with a familiar warmth. I LOVE classic Samba and the Bossa Nova and have bought a lot of compilations with hopes of broadening my collection. The past ones start with the old and end with the new but after about 4 or 5 songs (or when they start going into the more contemporary styles) I lose interest. But this CD is gorgeous and is what you want to hear: the warm silky vocals, the summer rain of syncopations, the guitars and all the sounds that poke in and out of the rhythms.
This CD is great for driving on clear sunshiny days with all the windows down and the sunroof open, cold rainy days inside with the heat and fireplace burning, candlelit dinners with that special someone, or daydreaming with some headphones on picking out the various sounds that make up Samba Bossa Nova.

5.0 out of 5 stars best album of the year, May 29, 2002

Honestly, before I bought this CD, I didn't even know anything about bossa nova or Veloso. I bought this CD at Kmart based on the album says Brazilian music. I told myself "give it a try." I have to say I immediate fall in love with this CD the first time I play it. I don't understand Portugese but the music and the songs are just wonderful. I especially I like Lamento No Morro, Meu Mundo e Hoje, Admiracao and Feitico Da Vila. The CD booklet translated a few sentences of the song into English, which is a big plus for me to understand how romantic the songs are. This album got my highest recommendation. Sit next to my Santana.

Think you've heard everything. Think again. This disc is an absolutely amazing compilation of fantastic Brazilian artists. If I really thought Brazilian music was universally like this, I'd have to move there! Every single cut is as good as the next and the recording quality is top notch, too. This is one of my all time favorite disks. Now, I have to track down these artists. I'm hoping every one of them has a cd release in the US, cause I want more!
