You can always expect a lyrical, rhythmic session out of my favorite jazz painist, Kenny Barron. With Samboa, that's exactly what I got. Barron's choice this time? A Brazilian emsemble but with the same sensual engagement so many of his tunes are known for. Love his variety, just enough improvisation to set the tune off but not deviate too far outside with the exception of a couple tunes. All the others, sumptuous.

I believe that this is Kenny Barron's best album. The back and forth between Barron and Tonihino Horta on the acoustic guitar plus the rest of the rythm section [Assumpcao bass, V.Lewis drums, M.Cinelu perc.]in a Brazillian style is so simple and melodic and quite relaxing.

SAMBAO made me get up and dance. I am a devotee of Kenny Barron's work. This cd had me IN Brazil.
Kenny is expert--he feels, maybe atavistically--the beats of the people in each note he plays.
The Steinway never had it so good as on SAMBAO.
