Great product....my wife and I use it when we start getting a sniffle or sore throat and we recover in a few days instead of 2 weeks.

So, Western medical science still has yet to come up with a cure for the common cold or flu. Sure, you can take a concoction of chemicals that will mask some of the symptoms...but why mask symptoms, risk your health, and agree to all the happy little side-effects when you can just have some good-tasting Elderberry syrup?

And this stuff works. It's proven to fight the illness, making the symptoms lessened as well as the duration. (Search for "Elderberry" on WebMD for more details of the study. The study was specifically for Sambucol (brand name), but other Sambucus (elderberry) products may work as well.)

Natural, no side-effects, cheaper, kids will take it (it's pretty sweet; almost a juice flavor, but thicker), no risk of OD - and it works!

With that said: now is the time to clear out the chemical symptom-hiders from your medicine cabinet, and keep a bottle or two of this handy.

We have been used Sambucol since our children were 1 year old. We believe it is a good source for the strength immune system. As well it was previously tested clinically. We got also good recommendations for Sambucol from other parents.

I rate this high because it works. It gets a star knocked off because I just looked at the label (I have some sitting right here) and it contains among "Other Ingredients": Glucose Syrup, Purified Water.

The reason that matters is because there is no ratio given. I don't really know what I'm buying. What you want to purchase is the elderberry concentrate. Call me suspicious but the past few years have not put me in a "Trust Me" mood when it comes to corporations. It also means that they can change that ratio of elderberry to water to glucose at any time due to seasonal processing needs. Not that I'm saying they do that and my experience has been positive.

Go to pubmed.gov and search for "elderberry" or "elderberry flu" or do a general internet search for "elderberry flu."

I stick to things where, yes the studies may be small, but there is some objective study and the study is fairly dramatic.

You can read any number of positive personal experience tales about any product. Given that: My experience is that it has prevented colds and flu, times when I've woken up, or come home from work feeling like, "I'M DOOOOMED!" You have to stay with it and take several times during the day if you've already caught something. I've also tried the product "Dr. Dunner, Sambu Guard" with similar results but it is even less widely available and is thinner (so I'm assuming, perhaps unfairly, less bag for my buck.)

Sambucol (Original liquid) also tastes really good to me. Keep in fridge after opening. It is hard to find and often shelf space is taken up by this same company's useless (in my opinion) "homeopathic" tablets.

It is a nice thick concentrate but that could be the glucose. I looked a bit for a product that is comparable. I found "Natural Sources ELDERBERRY CONCENTRATE." How to compare? They don't give 'concentration' values you can translate among products. So, I thought that price per calories might give a rough idea. The problem is that Sambucol contains added glucose. BUT! Even with that edge, I calculate the approx cost per calories of Sambucol to be $0.28 whereas the approx cost per calorie for "Natural Sources (16 oz)" to be only $0.16. PLUS the Natural Source has no added ingredients.

I wish to end by saying how happy I've been with the Sambucol and that we've found it to be very effective and that I have not yet tried the "Natural Sources" brand.

I'm not a holistic type, but I'm also not a fan of flu vaccines. I've been taking Sambucol (1 spoonful in the morning) in the late autumn/winter for several years, and have not suffered flu in that time. I have had one cold, so I'm not sure that it raises ALL anti-virus protection, but then again, I was working in a petri-dish of a crowded office with lots of parents and people travelling overseas at the time, so there may just be limits.

Sambucol is thick, with just a hint of a berry taste, not much flavor at all. A bottle doesn't last very long, so you'll probably want to buy two or three at a time. (Yes, vaccines would be cheaper over a season.) Don't let it drip on anything; the deep blue/purple color is hard to wash up. But I believe it helps reduce illness.

So, this product tastes terrible. I'm not terrifically sensitive to taste, but it's bad. It kind of has a fermented or rotten berry taste to it. Luckily there is no aftertaste. A quick shot of water seems to eliminate the taste. I read other reviews that said it tasted bad, so I thought perhaps it tasted like cough syrup. It doesn't taste medicinal, it just tastes like berry slurry gone very bad.

Having said all of this, I recently caught a case of the sniffles...specifically a sore throat. Everyone else I know who had the sore throat eventually got a stuffy head, and in some cases a chest cold. I followed the directions on the bottle for "enhanced immune support" and took 1 tsp 4 times per day. My sore throat lingered for a few days, then went away.

I suspect this product may have warded off a more serious cold. I did some research online and found numerous studies investigating potential antiviral properties associated with elderberry (the ingredient in this product). So, I'm sold. I ordered another bottle and am going to keep it around for use at the first sign of a cold. The jury is still out on whether this product actually works, but I'm definitely going to give it another try.

I took this product every time a cold came on for about a year and a half, it kicked the virus right out of my system and I was fine in about 2 days with less symptoms. I highly recommend this brand. I do NOT recommend the Nature's Way Sambucus, it tastes horrible, is watered down, is more expensive and does not work at all on me.

I stumbled apon this product a couple of years ago when I was looking for a cure for these little bumps my daughter got from another kid at my daycare called mullasum. I gave it to her for about a week and stoped because I figured it was not working and it sat in my cupboard after that for a while. I got this really bad sore throat one day and had nothing to help at the house and I could not leave so I found this in the cupboard where i had left it and took the intense dose 2tsp 4 times for the day the next day I was fine no sore throat and no other symptoms either so I looked it up on line and discovered that it was a serious immune booster and I immediatly went out and got more and started giving it to my daughter and myself daily within two weeks all of her bumps were gone! The doctors said there was no cure for these and that they just needed to run their corse and they would go away on there own she had them for about 18 months and they were speading badly. Well needless to say I got more and continues to give it to my daughter who was always sick with one thing or another since I run a daycare we were always sick from all the germs coming in. Last year I gave her the sambucol from end of Aug straight through till March and we did not catch one cold or the flu I was amazed! In March I stoped giving it to her because I figured the season was over and it was expensive to keep her on it. After three weeks of not taking the sambucol she got a really bad cold the only one she got all year. This has made me a total supporter of this product and I would recommend it to everyone! I will say that there is a diffrence in the sambucol and the Natures way sambucus because we have had better results with the sambucol. I was getting the sambucus because the natural health food store that I was getting it from said it was the same and that they just changed the name but it is not the same and not as effective either so stick with the original Sambucol that was develpoed by a virologist.
