FIRST OFF - HOW IS THE "SAMBUCOL for KIDS" PRODUCT DIFFERENT?

"SAMBUCOL for KIDS combines Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu's original black elderberry extract with echinacea, and propolis, all well documented for their health-promoting benefits." According to the vendor.

ALSO OF NOTE: Products with roughly the same constituents are available in lozenge form from "Nature's Way", and "Now" for children, and adults who would prefer to take something to suck on rather than swallow. With a sore throat the lozenge has a big advantage, augmented with added Zinc Gluconate.

WHAT IS THIS STUFF?

This patented "Sambucol" is the stuff that everybody tries to imitate. There is a reason for this - it has been proven to work against viruses like the flu. This "Nature's Way" product combines the excellent Nature's Way quality control with this proven, patented formula. The result is an excellent product that is not just for children and that has been documented to be effective against the flu.

NATURE'S WAY BRAND:

Yes, I do prefer the "Nature's Way" brand, though I have never purchased it from this vendor. This product uses the exclusive patent for "Sambucol", and "Nature's Way" has always demonstrated superb quality control, and efficacy in all the products of their's that I have used.

ALTERNATIVES TO SAMBUCOL:

Other products I have tried do combine elderberry extract with zinc, echinacea and Vitamin C, but they don't work nearly as well. The closest to this true Sambucol product comes from "Now", who makes a "Zinc Lozenge" that has all of these elements plus slippery elm, bee propolis, and 2.5 grams of sugar per lozenge. The 2.5 grams of sugar added per lozenge doesn't help one's immunity. Of course some people use herbal combinations with good effect, but Sambucol comes right out of the bottle and is ready to use.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

There really is something special involved in the manner that the elderberry is processed and extracted because no one has equalled the results against the flu virus the Sambucol has. If the flu has infected your household, this is definitely worth trying as there is no known way to simply get rid of the flu that works as well.

Every year I stock up on my Sambucol. For the cold and flu season nothing beats this stuff. It is great for my 3 boys twins age 2 and my oldest who just turned 4. Whenever they get a cold I reach for the sambucol and within a couple days their cold is gone! Great for congestion too. Highly recommend this!! Tastes good too and thats a big bonus.

My son spent 120 days last winter on antibiotics for sinus infection after sinus infection. It started again last fall. After the first one, I decided that we weren't going through that again this winter. Upon the advice of a friend who uses a lot of homeopathic remedies, I started him on Sambucol. It's May now, and with a combination of Sambucol and Airborne, he has endured many colds this winter that have been shorter in duration, and have not developed into sinus infections. No antibiotics the entire winter! They do say, however, that children need to be on the product for 8 weeks, and off for 2, if you keep them on a maintenance dose. My two other children have each started to get colds a couple of times, but within a few days of taking Sambucol, their colds were gone. I am not, of course, a Dr., but this seems to be working for us.

If you're happy spending money on this product, go for it. A positive state of mind can help you feel better. However, this product doesn't really do anything special.

Like Airborne before it, the product makes carefully worded claims, and people read their hopes into those claims. It's bioavailable and active within the body. Well, so are most things you eat. But words like bioactive, within a description that also includes wrods like "remedy" and "virologist tested," creates an impression within credulous minds that this product has been tested and proven by a virologist to cure colds and flus.

You say last year your child had lots of colds, this year you gave him sambucus, and the severity of his colds has decreased? Could it be because he's a year older, and better able to fight off colds? Could he be a year older, and less of a whiner about symptoms that have actually remained the same, if we could somehow put an objective rating on symptoms from cold to cold and from year to year?

The product has some vitamins or herbs that maybe could help the body in some fashion or other, but the product is not a cure for the cold or flu. And if you go to the Nature's Way website, you'll see they clearly stae that their products have not been evaluated by the FDA as cures or treatments for any disease.

As I said, if it makes you psychologically feel better, drink up. Just be aware that this product does nothing to actually cure colds and flus.
