THE ALBUM OF HIS CAREER--AGAIN,
By
This review is from: Same Dream (Audio CD)
Jon Secada has made the album of his career-again. Thirteen years after setting a new standard for soaring male vocals accompanying airborne melodies, Secada showcases all the flavors he has mastered over time. This is the kind of meticulously produced album that most of us thought were a thing of the past. Every one of the 13 tracks on "Same Dream" accomplishes a distinct mission. There is the uptempo Latin pop gem "It's Over" and first single "Window to My Heart" (already charting at AC), the heartbreaking ballad "Last to Know" and the hopeful, intimately voiced title track. There is also a reggaetón jam, an R&B sizzler that samples Hall & Oates and versions of two hits Secada wrote for others: "She's All I Ever Had" for Ricky Martin and "Coming Out of the Dark" for Gloria Estefan. "Dream" only grows more fruitful with repeated listening. Fine work.-Chuck Taylor/Billboard Magazine

I can't say enough good things about Jon Secada's new album, "Same Dream". Congratulations, Mr. Secada and team, on what I would call a truly masterful album. Ever since I began listening to this album, I haven't been able to stop smiling; this is at once a powerful, meaningful, and fun album. In it, Jon Secada demonstrates a genuine love of music in general and displays openness to many different genres of music (all of which have presumably influenced him over the years). While some people may criticize this album for a lack of "unity" or "cohesion," it's the diversity of songs on this CD that makes it so enjoyable to listen to. The fact that Mr. Secada can go from singing a modern Latin pop song, then into a country-bluegrass-Neil Diamond flavored ballad, into a Hall & Oates-inspired R&B/funk groove, and so much more, shows the tremendous range of his vocal abilities and his exceptional capacity to interpret and to convey the vast span of human emotions and experiences. One need only listen to the title track of this album, "Same Dream" (which seems to speak of personal evolution, the different "selves" that one becomes in the course of a lifetime, as well as those things that make one who one is), to get an insight into why it's appropriate for this myriad of styles to be found together. If the title track doesn't convince you of this, the elements that bring all of these songs together into one album are the unparalleled honesty of Jon Secada's voice (that soulful mix of tough and tender), and the contagious energy and ever-faithful passion that he gives to each song. Also, the production on this album is consistently impressive; the instrumentation at different points becomes strong, smooth, funky, organic, modern-whatever the song requires-and it complements Jon's voice, which has certainly been brought to the forefront in this album. Even if one might not be a fan of all the different musical styles in "Same Dream," it's difficult to deny the talent of the musicians who worked on it, and especially the extraordinary quality of Jon Secada's voice in each song. He's able to pull off all these different styles because he is, himself, an authentic musician: as in all of his albums, here he writes most of the songs, and more importantly than anything else, I think, it seems that he really FEELS what he sings. What comes through so clearly in every song of this particular album is love for music, love for life, and gratitude for love. If you take a chance to listen to this CD, no matter what your age, or what kind of music you normally enjoy, it's likely that you'll have fun listening to it, that you'll find at least one song you're crazy about, and that you'll feel something too. "Same Dream" has the potential to make you dance, sing, cry, smile, and more. In essence, this new album by Jon Secada might just bring you some hope, and it might even make you feel more alive. It is with heartfelt enthusiasm that I recommend this album to anyone who simply loves music.

I love Jon Secada. His voice is magical and smooth and soulful and I could go on and on. These are great new fresh songs and he hasn't disappointed. I love all of them, except ... It's going to take me a while to like She's All I've Ever Had and Comming Out Of The Dark. I know he wrote them (for Ricky Martin and Gloria Estefan respectively), but these versions didn't grab me from the start like the rest of the songs here. I know I'll get to like them soon, I know that I just need a couple of more listens first. The rest of the cd is amazing, and all songs are fantastic. I could cry just listening to the title track Same Dream. His voice really really shines through and the music is beautiful. I especially love the second track Window To My Heart. It's so good, and I also really love the Hall and Oats sampling in My Baby Don't Rock Like That. It's awesome. I wish for his sake he wasn't so underated. He deserves more number 1's. He's talented and undeniably gifted in expressing himself through the music he's written and through his soulful voice. This cd is a must. I highly highly recommend it. Please tour Australia!!!

Jon Secada sticks to his style on most tracks with a more modern style of music and mixes a hip hop sound on some tracks, this is one of his best albums, this is a must have.
