5.0 out of 5 stars Class.
You'll be disappointed if you're looking for another "jump around" here. This is totally different to the first album; much meaner and darker, which is good! Everlast switches to a more gruffer mode which is blends perfectly with the album itself. With great tracks like 'back from the dead', 'same as it ever was' and 'where I'm from' (to name but a few), it's...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good, but different from their first album.
Everlast makes this album good,he doesn't make up for an album that is somewhat dull . "It ain't a crime if you don't get caught" is a good example of a song that tells a good story with lyrics that should shut up any fool who calls the group a flash in the pan. But there aren't any hit songs like "Jump Around" that make it stand out. R&B...

5.0 out of 5 stars A personal favorite, February 9, 2003

MC Who (Westchester, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Same As It Ever Was (Audio CD)
Although not hailed as one of hip hop's best albums, and rightfully so, "Same As It Ever Was" is one of my personal favorites. Everlast, of course, is no lyrical genious, but his voice is gruff, his flow is ill, and his rhymes are rough, rugged, and masculine, mostly outlining drinking, drugs, violence, and sexual exploitations. Danny Boy only shows up on a few tracks but he is definately on point, equipped with sharp-edged lyrics and an agile delivery. A major reason why this album is sick is the production. Muggs was at his finest here, delivering the usual tracks made up of eerie basslines, high-pitched shrieks, and occasionally some fly trumpet loops. Highlight tracks include "Back From the Dead" (which is one of the best album-openers EVER ["Straight out the casket risin' up/ open up your eyes/ can't you see me?/ what the .... is this? madness!/ pick up my bones/ erase my name from off the tombstone"]), "Word Is Bond," featuring and produced by Diamond D (unbelievably dope!!!), and "Who's the Man." This album is consistent, hard-hitting hip hop. It is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, March 14, 2005
This review is from: Same As It Ever Was (Audio CD)
This is House Of Pain's best album.
You can't skip one track, they're all great right from the opening.
Back from the Dead has a phat beat, and Everlast flows.
Once Again Muggs and Lethal lay down the dope beats.
Keep it comin is one of my favorite songs as well as where I'm from. " How do you know where you're going if you don't look back, what's the use of having endz if you lose all your friends"

4.0 out of 5 stars Same As It Ever Was....The Best Of House Of Pain, October 6, 1998

Everlast........Tommy Boy........DJ Lethal...... They're back and they're better than ever. Now most people are probably going to scoff at me for putting this album ahead of their first one but to be blunt, Everlast's lyrics are twice as tight. (For example in "Back From The Dead" Everlast says, "Spreadin' like rumors, gossip and lies. Exagerated reports of my demise."and from there the verses proceed to get better.) And DJ Lethal's beats are twice as good. Now that doesn't mean that any song on this album compares to the classic "Jump Around",because none do, but the overall quality of this album is much, much better. Nowhere on this album will you find any signs of the group tiring, as was the case with their first album. House of Pain has etched a name for themselves, they surely won't relent now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best album by far / On Point, June 14, 2004
This review is from: Same As It Ever Was (Audio CD)
I remeber picking up this album in 1994 playing it through not skipping any track. This is their best album by far in my opinion. The production is top notch by Vig & the beats are laid down superbly by Muggs & Lethal. Everlast flows infinitely smooth on this album. " On Point is the single & incredibly catchy tune but " I'm A Swing it & "Where I'm From" are my two favorites on cd. Every song rocks with track "Over their Sh*t" has samplings from Milk D's hip hop classic "I Don't Care" with House Of Pain's unique style & twist to it. "Same as it ever was" a rock tune with an incredibly catchy hook to it. This cd is in my top ten list for hip hop albums. Essential to collection for anyone who likes real hip hop.

5.0 out of 5 stars this wont dissapoint.., December 30, 1998

For my money this is the greatest hip-hop album out there. The beats laid down by DjMuggs and DjLethal are non-stop boomers a little on the eerie side thanx to the influence of Muggs. Everlast is, as usual, on top of his game. His voice sounds hard as hell on this one and Danny Boy has some nice spots here and there. There is a collaboration with Everlast and Diamond D on this record that should be heard by all, its classic hip-hop. If your looking for soft radio friendly rap skip this album. House of Pain brings it on this one like no other hip-hop band has done in years. Although the critics and the media brushed it aside as if they were waiting for the "jump around" band to fizzle out. This one should recognized as a true masterpiece. Buy it ASAP you wont regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "It aint a crime" to have these beats+rhymes!!, March 31, 2005
This review is from: Same As It Ever Was (Audio CD)
Even now over 10years on, people are still talking about+listening to this classic hiphop album from one of the truely great hiphop acts in the last 15years. With MUGGS+LETHAL laying down some of the darkest+funkiest basslines you're likely to ever hear with break neck beats, screeching horns and haunting samples added to EVERLAST's gruff+DANNY BOY's high pitched rhyme deliveries, you're in for an amazing album. From possible the best opening track off ANY album "back from the dead" to the lead single "on point" to the ground shaking sounds of "over there sh**" to the story telling of "it aint a crime" to my personal favourite "who's the man?" we're treated to an array of tracks with a wide scope of topics. From beginning to end it's a typical H.O.P. album in the sense that there isnt a single track that you would skip past. If you dont have it+call yourself a hiphop fan you should be ashamed of yourself. The true meaning of a CLASSIC ALBUM!!!!
