What a voice. What solid musical arrangements. What a CD.
This is a solid urban project with a whole lotta soul that mercifully avoids a lot of the neo-soul musical cliches that have taken the luster from the genre within the past couple years. "Same Girl" is refreshing for this fact alone. Producers and musicians: you are on point here. THANK YOU for the real instruments used on this project, something missing from so much of today's R&B. But the real treat here is Trina's voice. How can I begin to describe it? It just flows all in and through these top-notch songs like hot caramel. She doesn't have to shout and go through all kind of acrobatics to be soulful. Her rich voice "speaks" for itself, if you will. A combo of Angie Stone and Chaka with a little Whitney thrown in is the best way I can describe Trina's sound, but she's still better heard than written about. Hopefully Amazon will have some sound clips up soon. "Same Girl" is easily one of the best projects of 2004. Treat yourself to what will surely also be remembered as one of the best albums of the decade. (Motown: please give this project the promotion it deserves...and while you're at it, re-release Trina's "Inside My Love" album and let us get a chance at that one, too!)

Lil' Jon remixes. Songs produced by and featuring Kanye West. Bonus and hidden tracks. Thankfully, NONE OF THOSE THINGS ARE ON THIS ALBUM! Just strictly R&B and soul from a gifted artist.
I actually heard Trina's first album that never came out, "Inside My Love" (in fact, 'Losing My Mind' was originally on that album as well as on here but in a different format). She had the goods but the songwriting wasn't as strong as it is on here. And you know you're in for a treat when the songs are produced, written and backed-up by Rahsaan Patterson, Van Hunt and Nicole Wray. No, that's not a typo, it is the same Nicole Wray who made 'Make It Hot' with Missy Elliott a while back, but no teenybopper sounds this time around. She sounds mature now; you can hear her in the background of 'I Never Thought'. As for Trina, she brings it raw on 'Just Another Way', 'Thinkin Boutcha', 'Dreaming of One'--well, all of the songs are good. This album is on Motown Records, where it seems like your album won't get promoted if your first name isn't Erykah or India. But to whoever's interested, if you like artists like Syleena Johnson, you'll love this album.

I truly don't and can't understand what actually gets played on radio these days (which is why I don't listen much). You would think a superior, totally dynamite, grown up CD such as this would garner major attention and some promotion. But no. There are people that still don't know who this woman is unless you mention "The Love Jones Soundtrack." She has a great deal more to offer and I readily admit, she blew me away with this project.
Because on this CD, she really lays out a superb project. It's rare to be able to sit and listen to an entire CD without the need or urge to hit the "skip" button. Not one dud on the entire CD. Simply a phenomenal output, start to finish! You'll enjoy the adult feel of this CD. No cookie cutter tracks! No fillers tracks! It's 100% pure, unadulterated listening pleasure, from "These are the Days" to "No Way Out" and everything in between. The Harmonies and smooth grooves will groove you and grab you. I promise. Well done Ms. Trina. Personal Star Rating System: 1. These Are the Days 10/10 2. Still the Same Girl 10/10 3. Dreamin' of One 10/10 4. Losing My Mind 09/10 5. Out/Gone 10/10 6. Joy 09/10 7. Super Old School R&B!,

This album is one of the best to come out in years. It is one of the few LP's that I do not have to skip a track or two. Each song is powerful and filled with emotion. Each arrangement flows smoothly from beginning to end.
One of the things that makes this such a great album is the back up singers. They blend perfectly with Ms. Brousard's silky smooth voice. There is no oversinging by the lead or the backup singers, just great harmonizing and songs that tell great stories. It's a shame that Trina's talent isn't better known. In my opinion the only contemporary R&B singers who is making music even close to what Ms. Broussard is making is Regina Belle. I purchased Trina's LP and Regina's newest release at the same time and it was the best R&B I've purchased in years.

The waiting is finally over. Trina Broussard delivers and definitely lives up to every expectation. I would define this with 2 words: Emotion & Feeling.Fantastic vocals blended with excellent production and superb musicianship. How about people like Rahsaan Patterson, Van Hunt, Trey Lorenz, Jerry Hey (of course!!) etc?? Make sure you take a break from your ordinary day, prepare to spend some time in heaven. What more can I say .. other than .. Thank you Trina for sharing - 1 of this year's highlights I'm sure! ;-) While we're at FANTASTIC Soul for 2004, don't forget to check out Val Watson's new album "Urbal" (June '04) on Thump records. 2 stunning ladies for your Soul in 2004. Love & Friendship / Håkan

I feel this is a great debut cd, which hasnt gotten much radio play, but Trina Broussard, who first came to our attention on the love jones soundtrack has put together a tight debut album...
I picked this up last summer and cant seem to put it down...all 12 tracks on the album are tight, from the first jam, these are the days, to dreaming of one(good love) where shes hoping to find that one good lover. the song losing my mind is an uptempo song, with a nice guitar and bass arrangement behind in which she talks about "losing her mind messing around with a particular guy. The song out/gone is another uptempo jam, where she basically tells a mn shes out due to lack of attention from him...(sorry I had to leave, sorry I had to go..whats the use of giving love to one who gets it in return). my favorite track on the cd, is another uptempo groove, I never thought, where she explains how she never thought that you would be the one..there werent any signs, you never had time for me...you stole my heart, and here I am. Very nice jam with a smooth beat behind it. this is a great overall album. Way to go Trina...go support the sister, you'll be very suprised at what you hear.

I first had the chance to hear Ms. Broussard on a Christmas compilation released by Jermaine Dupri a few years ago. The track was called 'Not Really Christmas' and from the first notes she sang, I knew this would be an artist to look out for.
Released without much fanfare or promotion on the part of Motown, I can say easily say "Same Girl" is the best project I've heard from that imprint in years. From the easy, midtempo title track, where she chides an ex with, "... heard that you belong to someone else, wish you love and happiness..took me some time to realize, you're where you belong..", to the gentle bounce of "Out/Gone" (featuring her longtime musical co-conspirator, Trey Lorenz on backing vocals), where she's tells a lover goodbye because "I called you baby....but you only answered when you needed some place warm..." this CD is music for full-grown folks. Put the kids to sleep, pour some wine and just listen. Vocally, Trina is dusky and smooth; pyrotechnics or showy oversinging for effect isn't her thing, but at the same time, you 'get' where she's coming from emotionally and feel connected just the same. Well done. She's got a brilliant career ahead. Now, if Motown would stop sleeping at the wheel and promote her...

Makes my ears sing,

In this confused industry called the music business, sometimes it gets lucky. Well, Kedar Massenburg (top dog at Motown Records) is definitely that. Being blessed to have introduced Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Chico DeBarge, India Arie, etc, he's brought to us Trina Broussard. A true talent, finally exposed. Although she's been in the game a while and done much work, the spotlight is now hers. There is nothing you won't love about this cd - the tracks, the lyrics, the vocal arrangement, the production - it's all there! I'll be on the look out for live performances, that's the only thing that could possibly enhance this product. If she gets the support for this project that she deserves, she should be labeled as "new female artist of the year" come Grammy time. Being lucky has a great sound to it.

Same Girl,

Like other reviewers, I was introduced to Trina Broussard by listening to her remake of INSIDE EACH OTHER. I didn't hear anything about her debut cd and that is a real shame but it just goes to show that instead of relying on radio promotion to learn about artists lovers of great music who want to support artists like Trina have to troll the internet or Mom & Pop music stores to get info about them.
Anyway, I'm sorry I didn't get my hands on this disc sooner but like the saying goes "good things come to those who wait". This disc features Trina's stellar vocal performance, spare musical arrangements that really showcase her voice and good lyrics that tell stories within the songs which is why I'd never heard any of the songs given the garbage that's on "replay" on today's radio stations. My standout tracks are: NO WAY OUT - I especially love the spare musical arrangement JOY & THESE ARE THE DAYS - love the vocal arrangement LOSING MY MIND - love the guitar arrangement THINKIN BOUTCHA - really playful beats I'd highly recommend this disc to lovers of strong vocalists since the disc is arranged perfectly to allow Trina's mellow, smooth vocals to shine. |
