Gloomy yet fascinating,

This review is from: In the Same Room/5 by Four (Audio CD)
This is an Ajax re-issue of the Jefferies brothers LP "In The Same Room" and 12" EP "5 By 4" originally released on Flying Nun in the mid-1980's.
The mood of these recordings is sombre to say the least. But the music is highly innovative. A sparse sound featuring guitars, violins and pianos and percussion, and of course the Jefferies Brothers distinctive vocal sound. This is about as dark and gloomy as Flying Nun ever got, don't expect the jangly, sparkling pop of The Chills or Tall Dwarfs. But if you want to hear a challenging, unique sound check this out, it is very rewarding despite its melancholy tone.

My favorite TKP album, this starts with a real cracker (Immigration Song) and ends with a Peter Jefferies extravaganza that leads neatly into his rather brilliant solo career. In the middle sits the minimal On Various Days, which could be snatched from The Cure's Seventeen Seconds. Some of the attached "5 by Four" songs feature a young Chris Matthews who went on to form The Headless Chickens with much success.
