5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Novel
This book is nothing short of marvelous. For a mid-western lesbian "outcast" i learned everything i need to know about lesbian life style, and felt good about it! Not only do the authors boost a gal's self esteem, but the how to guide's couldn't be more on point! Every straight, bi, gay or curious girl should have a copy! 2.0 out of 5 stars It's just a collection of people's stories...
Not only is this book, that is authored by TWO people, unaffecting, it's not even really written by them. They've got an intro in every chapter, and that's basically it. It's a collection of people's stories. That is something that should appear in GoNYC magazine, not in a book. This is the first of it's kind, and I expected it to move me. 5.0 out of 5 stars Real inspiration!, May 23, 2006

This review is from: Same Sex in the City: (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella) (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was written from so many different and diverse first party experiences, it was fantastic! It is also a great "How To" on great topics such as dating and coming out, etc. This book is a great representation of women from all walks of life. I really respect the women who put their heart and souls into writing these stories and I appreciate that they were willing to share their lives with the world. This book not only made me think about my own life but the lives of so many women I know. If you personally or if you've ever had a mother, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a best friend or anyone close to you that has questioned their sexuality or has come out - you will definitely identify with this book and I highly recommend it! It teaches that you are not alone out there, it will change your outlook and maybe even your life! Good luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative!, August 18, 2006
This review is from: Same Sex in the City: (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book, and it helped me realize that the feelings that I've been having toward women for the majority of my life are common and lots of other females have been in the same boat as me. The only semi-negative message I got from the book was "pretty popular girls can be lesbians, too".

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally: A book for those who date AND are pretty, stylish lesbians!, March 25, 2008
This review is from: Same Sex in the City: (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella) (Paperback)
Wow. Thank you, Laurens, for writing exactly what the world needed: a book that offered advice and great stories for lesbians who a. not only don't fit the awful lesbian stereotype, but also hate that this stereotype exists b. believe that their desire to look attractive has NOTHING to do with their sexual preference c. know that their desire for pretty feminine women doesn't mean they are 'less lesbian' than someone who desires women that get called 'sir' in public, and d. want to live out, visible, happy lives. I just finished "Reading the L Word", a very academic analysis of the show, and was appalled. It seemed that every contributor (most of them lesbians) trashed the show just because the women didn't wear oversized cargo pants, birkenstocks, and have crew cuts. Apparently, this and the fact that the characters were more concerned with sex and partying than endless political protesting made the L Word "not represent the lesbian community". I wish I could tell the contributors to read the Laurens' book in order to realize that their world of sexless, boring, prudish, ugly women aren't the only dykes out there. Back to the book: ANY lesbian who hates the 'styleless ugly lesbian' stereotype will LOVE this book. They will feel like they are hearing stories and advice from friends about coming out, sex, crushes on straight girls (I wish I had this book several years ago!), dating and random hook ups, long term relationships, etc. It is also handy for those who are questioning their sexuality, as I feel like the authors did a good job separating the heteroflexibles from those who really were only into women sexually. When the book ended, I was really disappointed. I wanted to read more on other topics relevant to lesbian life. I would love it if the Laurens wrote a sequel to "Same Sex In The City", or started an advice column for the non-stereotypical lesbian! There are so many more relevant topics that I'd love to see covered, such as: 1. how to tell if a hot femme girl at a mixed event is queer, 2. handling non-monogamy or threesomes in lesbian relationships, 3. how to change the 'ugly lesbian' stereotype, and 4. lesbians and overdrinking, overdrugging, and overpartying (a topic that always gets covered with gay guys but never with dykes). All in all, a wonderful and necessary read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I've been waiting for..., July 19, 2006
This review is from: Same Sex in the City: (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella) (Paperback)
I want to thank the authors and the wonderful women who contributed their stories to this book. When I came out several years ago, it was a scary time as I had the same stereotypical views of what a lesbian was as the next person. I was unsure of myself and even more scared that I would never find people like me, which is to say a femme girl who happens to like femme girls. Through the years, I have discovered that this world does indeed exist. In a way, this book has reinforced to me just how many of us there are out there and it will give the rest of society a chance to see into this cross-section of the lesbian world. It was so great to read so many of these stories and know exactly how these women were feeling and what they were thinking. It has also been a great way to get my friends and family to better understand exactly where i'm coming from. Thank you again for this great book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Could NOT put this thing down!, August 21, 2006
This review is from: Same Sex in the City: (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella) (Paperback)
I was up until the wee hours of the morning for three nights in a row--this book is a page-turner. I'm not gay (that's what they all say, but four beers later...), so the dating info wasn't really helpful to me, except in a fascinating, peek-through-the-keyhole kind of way. The narratives were riveting: two on Chanukah cruises in the Caribbean, threesomes gone bad, raw and real stories about coming out and breaking up, and hilarious, read aloud anecdotes about dating, bar-hopping, and "going in for the kill." I was sad to read about the parents crying over their beautiful gay girls and glad to see them come around. I've already recommended this book to half a dozen people--you don't have to be gay to fall in love with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover, November 8, 2011

This review is from: Same Sex in the City: (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella) (Paperback)
While I haven't read the whole book yet, I've got to say I'm rather impressed with what I've read thus far. This is an excellent book for young (or old) women who are either exploring their own sexuality or, like myself, wish to expand their understanding of this very sensitive topic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good service, although my dog ended up nearly eating the book when arrived, so I guess it's tasty!, December 28, 2009
This review is from: Same Sex in the City: (So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella) (Paperback)
It arrived as scheduled and for what I could see it good shape until it was droped by the post man in a ranny day and my dog found it first, so I found the book all wet and part of the cover bitten up and torn.

Luckly, once dried up the content was readable, so I got to read it and I loved it (and that's what matters).

The different stories and explanations of the lesbian vocabulary are great!

It's not informative and it's not different. It's full of cliche's and there's even a rip of a dashboard song. "Turning to you is like falling in love when you're 10." If you're going to have most of your book written for you by real people, at least have what you write be REAL and YOURS. Even Greg Behrendt's "It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken" is more effective than this. This is the book that stereotypes are made of.
