Decent waveform generator for the price, January 21, 2011
This review is from: Same as FG-500 in Kit Form
The kit arrived on time and went together easily. The assembly instructions were clear and the total time to get it up and running was perhaps 2 hours. The fit and finish on the case could be a little better, but with just a little coaxing everything went together.
The unit operates as described. There is some waveform distortion towards the very high end of the frequency range, but that was expected.
Overall the unit works well. For the price, it's hard to beat.

Better than I expected, August 10, 2011

This little function generator is actually fun to put together and use. Of course, this depends on what your idea of fun is. I'm a pretty bad solderer, so I was surprised when it worked the first time I turned it on. The kit includes detailed instructions as well as a quick primer for those who've never soldered before. I accidentally routed the jumper cables on the wrong side of the circuit board; fortunately this didn't seem to cause any problems. I found some parts of the build to be rather tricky, like soldering the rotary switches and 16-pin IC socket, but it was definitely worth the time and effort, and this is probably the cheapest function generator you can find anywhere - a whole order of magnitude less expensive than the simplest prefabricated one. Very satisfying kit.

Fantastic Little Generator!, January 15, 2012
This review is from: Same as FG-500 in Kit Form
I bought this kit a few days ago when my other function generator died (we won't get into how that happened lol!). This kit went together smoothly and easily; the instructions were very clear and well-marked. There's even an explanation of the theory of how it works, and a quiz on the last page so you can review your learning! But most importantly...this thing works! After getting it together, it worked on first try. I verified signal output with my oscilloscope; fairly good. While the sin waves had some spikes in them when using the high frequency settings, overall it was very stable and looked good on the scope. One little caveat: I didn't feel the instructions were clear on which ring nuts to use where for the control knobs (so just double-check this carefully before committing to soldering some parts in place!), and also the frequency setting knob doesn't line up with the markings on the front panel - not a big deal but a little disappointing after a couple hours' assembly time. I would recommend this to any DIY'er who wants a cheap signal generator plus the fun and satisfaction of putting it together yourself! If you want, you can also buy this pre-assembled here on amazon; it just costs more.
