This book has some very adult themes of drug usage that may be unsuitable for younger 10 year olds. While the portrayal does convey that the girls are making bad choices on an adult level, I am not sure those themes translate down to the 5th grade reader. Also, alarmingly, no real world consequences occur beacuse of the girls' choices, they are able to float thru the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sammy Keyes and the Curse of the Moustache Mary, June 21, 2000
By A Customer
Sammy is spending New Year's at her friend Dot's house and it ends up becoming much more interesting than she first thought. First Sammy finds that her stolen skateboard belongs to a friend of a friend's and she decides that she is going to get that skateboard back no matter what. When she finally gets to Dot's house she meets Lucinda Huntley, who tells her a story about her ancestor the Moustache Mary and the argument between two families that has been going on for a hundred years. Sammy then finds out that she has a chance to get her skateboard, and when she goes to a party to look for it, she finds out that some people she knows aren't who they think they are. Sammy starts to doubt her own judgement, and it doesn't help when Moustache Mary's cabin burns down, starting another dilemma for her.

This book is different from the other Sammy Keyes mysteries but it is still great; Sammy is still a strong, definite character who's not going to put up with anything. I would reccomend this book to anyone (and this means adults too) over eleven years old because anyone under eleven might be overwhelmed by situations Sammy runs into, but anyone can read it and enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Misleading Review but BEST SAMMY KEYS!, August 9, 2000
By A Customer
I thought that the review amazon.com gave this book was a bit misleading. They made it sound like the whole book was about Sammy Keys growing up, doing drugs, and getting a boyfriend. And since I'm a boy, that didn't sound too appealing. But when I read the book, I really changed my mind. The drug part REALLY tied into the story and it WASN'T all about her growing up. The mystery was really clever and humerous. I'd give it ten stars if I could!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is AMAZING!, December 17, 2004
A Kid's Review
I read it in 2 days! (I'm a slow reader!) Once again Wendelin makes a page turner! This one is mixed with a couple of Sammy's inside issues to. Like Casey, an eigth grder who happens to fancy Sammy. (Sammy has a thing for him herself!) Then there is the mystery which as always you can never figur out unitl it's over! There's an interesting old woman with a pig, a huge hundred year family feud, a cute guy, a scary party, and a treasure of gold. This book will keep you reading I can assure you!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorites!, April 20, 2005
This Sammy Keyes is one of the best. I enjoy Sammy's usual sarcasm, humor, and placing her nose where it doesn't belong. We get to meet a new Acosta, learn a curse, see the Borshman, enjoy appelflappen, and experience pig-love. Literally. For Sammy fans, this is one mystery you might want to read over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hit that left me wanting more!, October 16, 2002
By A Customer
This may be the best book in the series! It is funny and a wild adventure for Sammy, Dot, Holly, and Marissa. Putting some historical information about the cabin just livens up the book even more. I'd say the best part of the book would be about Casey, personally. A lovely guy that I want to meet (hope Heather's not around!). When Sammy goes to the party and meets Casey, I couldn't put the book down! I had to read the chapter over at least five times because it was so good. I recommend this book to anybody. A standing ovation for Sammy, her pals, Casey, and of course, Mrs. Van Draanen.

A Kid's Review
This book is mystery at a whole other level. It has real life issiues tied in with a great real life mystery. This book was exciting and I couldn't put it down. I would suggest this book to ages 11 and up because it has some material in it that may not be suitable for kids under 11. This book is a great read, it sure was for me!!!

Also, alarmingly, no real world consequences occur beacuse of the girls' choices, they are able to float thru the situations unscathed giving the reader a false sense of enpowerment should they be in the same situations.

This is all buried rather far back in this otherwise entertaining mystery. It is too bad books are not required to have a rating system on them like all other media our children are exposed to. Plan on having some discussions with your child after he/she reads this!
