Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The seventeenth and penultimate Sammy Keyes adventure finds the intrepid Sammy and her best friend Marissa at sea on a weeklong cruise to Mexico. The ostensible reason for the cruise is to celebrate Sammy’s fourteenth birthday, but the real reason is for Sammy to get to know her long-lost father—rock star Darren Cole. Before the bonding can truly begin, however, Sammy, being Sammy, finds herself involved in a murder mystery involving a fabulously wealthy family. “Trapped on the high seas,” she ruefully thinks, “with psycho-rich killers who are not afraid of tossing their problems overboard.” Let the adventure begin! Grades 5-8. --Michael Cart --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Avid mystery readers and Sammy Keyes fans won't want to miss this who-done-it cruise ship mystery as Sammy, her newly-discovered dad, and their best friends, Marissa and Marko, set sail on the high seas.

This is a classic Sammy Keyes mystery...with the dysfuntional Kensington family, heirs to a perfume dynasty, as the main cast of suspiciou characters in this wild adventure story. The suspense builds as Sammy and friends kick into crime-solving mode when the Diamond Dame of the Kensignton family, Kate Kensington, suddenly goes missing aboard ship and no one except her adopted grandson Kip seems to care.

In the next-to-the last book in the series, Wendelin Van Draanen pays tribute to the mystery genre as she cleverly and meticulously unfolds a well-plotted suspense story that sequentially lays out all the clues to "decode" a mystery that keeps readers guessing to the very end. Along the way, the relationship between Sammy and her dad develops into a trusting, caring father-daughter bond that is truly heartwarming. Put this poignant page-turner mystery on your must read list for a great fall read.

I didn't have high expections for this book, because Ithought it would be....well, silly. Nope, not at all. A classic Sammy Keyes whodunit with a couple interesting new characters.

The book starts with Sammy and Marissa meeting Darren and the drummer, Marko, to go for a cruise for Sammy's 14th birthday. But in line, Marissa's bugging Sammy, so Sammy tells Marissa about two boys in line in front of them. Enter the Kensingtons, a family of millionaires who own a line of perfumes. Teresa, the adoptive parent of african boy, Kip, Bradly, the uncle who wants to run the company- badly. JT, who Marissa quickly develops a crsh on, and his parents, Lucas and LuAnn, Noah, who just happens to be the cruise director, his mother, Ginger, the sister of the head of the family, and the head of the family, Kate, also known as The Diamond Dame. They're here to scattered the ashes of Kae's late husband, John T. Kensington, and toread the will. But when Kete goes missing, and Kip is the only one who seems to care, of course Sammy is already in knee-deep and sinking fast.

The plot line moves long fast, but not so fast it's confusing. Darren, Marko, Kip and the rest of the Kensingtons are very strog characters, and devepe as the book moves on. And in typical Sammy Keyes style, there are laugh-out-load moments, what with Kensington Clue, 'Scribbled On Shoes', ad Marko and Darren's stories from when they were kids. The mysery is interesting, and has an end that is a total surprise. All and All, it's a great book, and I'm looking Forward to the next one!

Pleae ignore any spelling mstakes, I'm on my Kindle PaperWhite and this thing is hard to type on

Is it weird that I'm a teacher but I can't get enough of Sammy? She's got to be one of the coolest kids around, despite her less than perfect home life. I love each of her new adventures and really enjoyed this one as well. I have read them to upper grade kids and they have loved them too.

I've been reading this series since I was in 8th grade and now I'm in college. The story still hooks me and swallows me whole. I could hardly focus throughout the day until I finished the book. It was amazing. I loved seeing Sammy interact with her newly found father. Ms. Van Draanen did a wonderful job creating his character and satisfying the reader's long awaited revelation.

This book was amazing. Any fan of mystery, I highly recommend this series and book. Sammy Keyes and the Killer Cruise was riveting, captivating, and kept me learning. I learned a bit more about cyphers and boat language and that scribbled shoes are cool. Ms. Van Draanen continues to make me laugh throughout the entire book, reminding me constantly of me and my best friend's relationship. Excellent book, great writing, compelling story. Recommended for Sammy Keyes fans who have read the previous books. Recommended for those who have not read the rest of the series...go back and read the others before reading this. You'll be sad you didn't.

I love the Sammy Keyes series and this one is no exception. There is plenty of mystery, humor, and feel good moments to make this book a delightful read. Also, this is one that can stand alone without much background information into Sammy's life needed. So, if you or your tweenish child have ever been on the California to Mexico cruise, liked a rock band, enjoyed a few good chemistry puns, had the chance to get closer to a family member, or have just had fun hanging with friends, this isn't a book to miss.
