Amazing picture book for a 12 years old author, January 21, 2009
This review is from: Sammy's Adventures (Perfect Paperback)
We just returned from an overseas vacation and I wanted my daughter to write a story about the wonderful trip. So I searched the web and tried to see if there were already some good picture books written by girls of similar age so she can use as a sample. And there it was - the "Sammy's Adventures" written and illustrated by Lily Tang (12 yr old)!
When the book arrived a few days ago, we could not believe this indeed was done completely by a girl at such young age! Although the story was simple, joyful and with not-so-perfectly-smooth transition between the story lines, the pictures illustrated by the young author were very beautiful and details-oriented, with obviously a tremendous amount of artistic talents and love for life poured into each drawing.
The imagination of the author was very animated yet convincing, probably a reflection of many wonderful places the author herself had visited during her family vacations. It was quite creative that author inserted a handwritten letter to Sammy's mom in every page that showed the place he was visiting, which added a warm and joyful touch to the pictures and connected nicely with adult readers especially parents.
At the end of the Sammy's journey, several trip photos were demonstrated and that was a very natural and clever way to conclude the book. How many of us would not follow such a custom of showing friends and family the trip photos when we came back from a memorable vacation?
I would say this is definitely a very inspiring book for my daughter and hope she will learn greatly from it, not just how to draw and write, but how to transpire a common theme like a family vacation into something much more creative and endurable.
