3.0 out of 5 stars Good debut novel
This is a funny novel and I liked idealistic Sammy. The jams that she inadvertently got into kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next. I liked how Sammy dealt with her problems and managed even the most embarrassing situations with spunky charm. My only complaint is after awhile it started to drag. I think it would have been a better story if it was a...

As a devotee of Helen Fielding and Candace Bushnell, my bar is exceptionally high for fiction where the heroine's exploits include men, alcohol, and email drama. However, Ms Gore's DC answer to Bridget Jones rises to the occasion and made me laugh out loud many times throughout the two days where I could not put this book down. This insider's view of politics humanizes an otherwise dry area of subject matter and made me want to learn more about what happens as the behind the scenes staffers work long hard days for their political seniors. One need not even agree with Ms Gore's brand of health care policy to enjoy a delightful, well researched and humorous read. My favorite addition was the use of Blackberry as a verb - well done throughout the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical, Fresh and Brilliant, August 20, 2004

It's been a long time since I've felt so close to such a wonderful character. Thank GOD there is finally a heroine out there who is utterly human. And who doesn't want to read a book that will make you laugh out loud and demand to be read in one seating?

Ignore the (very few) pompous, spiteful and annoying amazon.com reviews below (um, is it just me or have there been a ton of frustrated ex-LIT majors out there who do nothing but write bad reviews lately?) and BUY THIS BOOK! You will laugh at the heroine's fabulous neurosis...empathize with her career foibles and successes...and enjoy a good story.

This is not "chick-lit," in fact, don't try to classify this as anything other then a fantastic, funny and fresh example of fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wickedly funny and surprising debut, September 14, 2004

This review is from: Sammy's Hill: A Novel (Hardcover)
Let me first say that I was one of 15 interns for Vice President Gore in Spring Semester 2000 and got to experience politics from the OVP's office in the U.S. Capitol. During my internship, the Washington Post had an article about Gore in which I learned that as a young man, he was divided between wanting to be novelist and wanting to be a politician. Who knows how a career as a novelist would have panned out had he chosen that path? I was hoping that he would write a novel after the disappointment of 2000 and deciding against running again.

When I heard that Kristin was writing a novel about politics, I was thrilled to see someone in the Gore family pick up on Al's youthful dream. I was anxiously looking forward to reading her novel, trusting in her writing ability since she worked as a writer on "Futurama" and "SNL". Still, there's always a little suspicion that she got a book contract because of who she is rather than natural ability. What a refreshing surprise her first novel turned out to be!

To call it "chick lit" is derogatory and limits her readership audience to a smaller pool. I think her novel would appeal to anyone, male or female, who has worked on Capitol Hill or the White House or who is generally interested in politics and the people who work for the politicians. The little details sprinkled throughout the novel, from reading "The Hotline" and "Roll Call", are familiar to anyone who has worked on Capitol Hill. Kristin definitely knows her topic well and presents them realistically, albeit with much humor thrown in.

This is a rare novel in which I laughed out loud quite frequently. From her dead on digs against Bush in the guise of "President Pile", to the latest neurotic mistakes of her heroine, "Sammy's Hill" is wickedly funny and ultimately satisfying. I especially love the different characters she works with and maintains friendship with, particularly Sammy's unique fondness for telemarketers, an interesting quirk itself. Even her fish, Shackleton, offers humor that brings out Sammy's witty outlook regarding his premature death pose.

The novel covers about a year and a half and how quickly politics can change in that year. Politicians seen as frontrunners can stumble, and those who were discounted could easily fill the void. Sammy's relationships seems to mirror such political changes. One of the brightest ideas about the novel is Kristin's lack of labeling characters as "Democrat" or "Republican", "liberal" or "conservative". She presents her character as real people and readers get to know them without labels predetermining one's bias for or against a character.

If I have any complaints about the novel, there are just a few. One being Sammy's overanalysis of everything, though its possibly part of her charm and offers much insight into the workings of the female mind. Sometimes she carried on a little bit too much, making me feel neurotic as I read Sammy's thoughts. The other complaint is that I would have liked the novel to be a tad bit longer. The character Charlie should have been developed more, though it does leave room for a possible sequel in which we get to know him a bit more. All in all, an impressive debut novel and I certainly hope Kristin will write another one soon, either a continuation of Sammy's experiences, or one with new characters and topic altogether. Her sense of humor is too rare in novels, so she can definitely sell funny in future novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great summer reading, August 30, 2004

This book is a refreshing combination of "Sex and the City" and an afternoon spent watching C-SPAN. While I admit I was bored in the beginning by the somewhat clunky writing, the characters quickly grew on me. Although some of the discussions of health care policy or Sam's idealistic exclamations ("I'm so happy to make a positive difference in the world!!) are forced, the book is overall charming, fast-paced and enjoyable. Definitely worth picking up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written!, September 12, 2004

I was actually quite impressed by Kristin Gore's writing talent, as demonstrated in Sammy's Hill. Gore is very talented and creative with her writing. The book is explicitly detailed, which allows for the reader to play a movie in their own minds while reading the book, and it is extremely hilarious!

Being as that I personally love politics or anything associated with politics, this fiction book was a treat to read and a nice break from all the non-fiction I read regarding politics.

Way to go, Kristin! Looking forward to your future books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, September 5, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sammy's Hill: A Novel (Hardcover)
I started to write a review after reading the excerpt in Glamour magazine, but decided to hold off on judgment until I read the full book. I was not disappointed. This book is hilarious, funny, and friendly. I could easily relate to it through myself or my friends, the lead character suffers from about every neurosis I had ever heard of it and describes everything perfectly. I would recommend it to about anyone...although it is almost like a chick flick in words...it was wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars An instant chick-lit classic!!, September 29, 2004
This review is from: Sammy's Hill: A Novel (Hardcover)
Kristen Gore may have a famous dad, but she is a smart girl and hilarious writer who used to pen for the Harvard Lampoon. This book will prove she got published on her abilities alone.
Everyone who likes fun chick-lit novels with loveable heroines will really adore this book- a combo of the single-girl-in-the-city (Milkrun)and my-boss-is difficult (Nanny Diaries) genres. Girls who like the funnier, wittier writes in the genre like Sara Mlynowski and Sophie Kinsella will love this one.

The novel follows Samantha ("Sammy")- an overworked Capitol Hill aide who actually loves her job (a nice change!). The book follows her through the trials for love and loss, all the while straddling funny sub-plots, like how she can't keep her fish alive, or why you should NEVER EVER hit "reply to all" on a Blackberry! All the while she is helping her boss, a Senator, prepare bills and even an upcoming election campaign.

Although Gore is obviously a Democrat, this book never even metions which party Sammy works for. So all politics are removed from the book, and what remains is simply a great story. Sammy is refreshingly flawed and silly, but also free of body-image issues, which is a nice change. I laughed out loud many times, and as a former Cap Hill aide I appreciated it even more. Read this if you love chick-lit!! You won't regret it. And the movie rights have been purchased- can't wait for that release!

I was shocked at how hilarious the main character was in this novel. Sammy (of Sammy's Hill) has all of the flaws and faults that we all have rolled up into one fabulous main character. You will see glimpses of you, your mother, your sister, and your best friend in this character. I literally laughed out loud during this novel (much to the chagrin of my seatmates on the airplane.) All I can say is Kristin, MORE PLEASE!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and engaging, June 22, 2005

This review is from: Sammy's Hill: A Novel (Hardcover)
I am an avid book reader and most books can be judged by how many times I read them. I've read Sammy's Hill at least 6 times in the last 8 months. The heroine is engaging, and her klutziness is endearing and human. I would recommend this book to anyone, male or female, who is interested in the political scene in Washington. One of the best books I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a treat!, September 13, 2004

kookoo4books (Venice, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sammy's Hill: A Novel (Hardcover)
Finally - a book targeted to women like me - ones who like to both laugh AND think! I laughed out loud over and over again as I read along with Sammy's pratfalls - i.e., who can't empathize with the mortification of accidentally sending a snarky or incriminating email to a much broader audience than intended? Sammy not only does this (and occasionally worse), but Ms. Gore delivers the familiar scenario with such added hilarity that the embarassment goes to a higher level - which meant a higher volume of laughter from me. But more than just being outright funny, Sammy's Hill seemed to appreciate that I might have been seeking more than just fun from my fiction - I found the political stuff both interesting and enlightening. Even felt better educated about health care issues as I read my Sunday New York Times article about the Canadian health care system yesterday! How nice that Kristin Gore managed to do what many of the "chick lit" authors have failed to pull off - entertain my funny bone while engaging my brain. I hope I'll get to read about more of Sammy's adventures soon!
