A Excellent Third Edition in the superb 'Sampled' Series...., March 25, 2004

Possibly the greatest series of `Who Sampled this series of albums' the sampled series has remained consistently brilliant, and by implementing a judicious selection process across the all the albums, the quality has remained consistent. The people that are likely to get the most enjoyment from these albums are naturally people that cover a wide variety of Black/Urban/Motown/Jazz influenced music. But then people investigating this release will undoubtedly be familiar with the previous albums in the series. There is a lot of material to take in here (40 Tracks across 2 Cd's), and maybe not all of it, will appeal to everyone...but there's not denying some of the truly exceptional songs contained here. "Marlena shaw's - California Soul" is as powerful as Aretha in her prime......or the Motown groove of "Bob & Earl's" Harlem Shuffle" (sampled by `Cypress Hill'). `Basement Jaxx take the festival Carnival sounds of "Bolivar's - Merengue" for their "Bingo Bango" dance track. "Sly & the family Stone's - Into my own thing" provide the backdrop of "Fatboy Slim's -Weapon of Choice"....in a slightly irrelevant point, surprisingly a lot of the material that is actually sampled here, seemingly made its way into Hip-Hop/Dance music (bizarre). But taking this disc on its own merits, it works tremendously as a Cd to stick on with group of friends that'll relish guessing what track the samples where used for. But more importantly, when the novelty of guessing the tracks wears off, you are undoubtedly left with a utterly sublime collection of Rare groove, Jazz, Soul & Funk tracks, that are obviously more that worth the investigation, otherwise why would the artists sample them???
