Excellent overview for sampler lovers,

I just got this book today and am completely taken in by the beautiful photography of these old samplers. The descriptions are informative but not too lengthy. Many of the sampler bands can be stitched out of the photograph. No patterns are included as these are all museum pieces. You won't be disappointed in this book.

This review is from: Samplers (Fitzwilliam Museum Handbooks) (Paperback)
This book is a compliation of photographs detailing the sampler collection of the Fitzwilliam museum. There is no real commentary, only extended descriptions complimenting the photos.Though this kind of book might appear to be lacking compared to larger, thicker books, there are few large studies of samplers that can afford the space for all the color pictures needed to truly appreciate the artistry of the work. What is particularly special about this collection is that it shows examples of continental samplers, whereas most books on the market only show English and/or American. It was refreshing and exciting to finally see some nice photos of those works for a change. The cut whitework samplers and mixed samplers are also standouts. The collection starts with a Fifteenth Century Egyptian sampler and ends with an English sampler from the 1930's. It's a nice book to have at a reasonable price. If you love historical samplers you should consider this book. It can only help you appreciate the art form.
