This is a very decent book on Gmail and it gets you up to speed quickly. The author provides you with a good roadmap with which to navigate your way around many of the less intuitive but useful features of Gmail. But please be forewarned that while your preview of this book here at may show colour screen shots, the copy you receive or purchase from the bookshop may be entirely in B&W instead. This applies to many if not all the "Teach Yourself in 10 minutes series"! The publisher makes no effort to respond to my inquiry on this. For this reason, I give this book a 3-star rating instead of 4!

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Overview of Gmail's Functionality June 11, 2011
Ever since it was introduced in 2004, Gmail has been a revolutionary and advanced webmail client. It owed as much of its reputation to the extremely generous amount of online space (1 GB at the time of the launch), as it did to a very innovative interface. Gmail is probably the first major online application that implemented the so-called AJAX group of web-development methods. AJAX made it possible to make web application that look and feel similar to the desktop applications. Most of this stuff is behind the scene, but it serves to emphasize the fact that behind Gmail's relatively simple and intuitive interface there is some pretty powerful technology.

Even though Gmail is intuitive and easy to use, there are plenty of features that it has which are not easily accessible or which are not familiar to most users. There is enough of the information about these Gmail features online, but if you want to get a better sense of this webmail client it helps to have a handy book that can teach you most of the things that you need to know. Sams "Teach Yourself Gmail in 10 Minutes" is one such book, and it certainly has enough information to satisfy most Gmail users. Some of the topics that are included are: "Composing your mail," "Organizing people using contacts and groups," "Posting your buzz," "Using chat," and "Advanced Gmail." The book is very informative, but it is mostly organized around step-by-step description of the tasks that you can accomplish with Gmail. These get the job done, but they also make the book somewhat tedious to read.

The primary reason for my purchase of this book was to understand more about the labels used within gmail (instead of folders) for organizing my contacts and their subsequent messages.

I realized that I have been using Microsoft products for too long and am used to the folder method of organizing my information. It is second nature to me and I have decided to stick with that. I will handle all of my messages through Outlook so it is a moot point for me.

However, if there are others out there that are NOT entrenched with the folder method of organization, then it would benefit you to get this book since it makes it easier to understand how to set up the labels and use colors and select indicators to organize your information.

I ordered the Kindle version to use with my PC Kindle app so that I could access the information right away. That was really helpful because I was also teaching my sister what I learned since we both planned to use this information about labels.

3.0 out of 5 stars OUT of DATE! May 11, 2013

Book seemed to help until we realized that it is out of date! Kind of pointless to read a book that is out of date! You think?

2.0 out of 5 stars The book is not useful to me. May 3, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book seems to be out of date. My gmail screens do not look like the illustrations in the book. Buttons described in the book do not show up on my screen. The screen illustrations in the book are too small for my less than perfect eyesight.

The copy I received was horribly blurred on the figure illustrations. It was simply impossible to follow the tutorial. Not worth the least on the copy I received.

The illustrations of the windows are in very small print, so small that I need a magnifying glass to read the headings and the text.
