4.0 out of 5 stars Tough Call
Java is not an easy language to learn which is why I believe some folks have chosen to give it a low mark. 4.0 out of 5 stars Tough Call, July 7, 2000
Java is not an easy language to learn which is why I believe some folks have chosen to give it a low mark. I didn't find any errors in this book which is refreshing after reading SQL in 24 hours (Bad Book). I didn't however run very much of the code in the book but I did examine most of the code thoroughly and didn't find anything major. The reason I didn't run the examples is that I started with much more advanced books and got knocked back. So I picked this one up and it helped me out quite a bit, in understanding concepts and understanding the classes included in the jdk. The book is written on a very personal level which I liked a lot and I thought the author was funny.

The book does get much more advanced starting in chapter 10, though this is just a part of learning java. The only reason that I didn't give this book a 5 is that author fails to completely explain a few of the examples in the book. This just made me read the examples over and over again until I understood them. Good learning tool. I would definetly not suggest reading Java 2 in 21 days after a book like this, I would go with Beginning Java 2 by Ivor Horton, which is an excellent book but I wouldn't start with Ivor's book, if your knowledge about java=0.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Really helped..., December 19, 2000
By A Customer
I picked up a couple books on JSP and realized I needed to know more about Java. I didn't know anything... until I got this book.

Well written, worded for a novice, this book will teach you the skills you need to become independent in Java programming. I highly recommend it.

Rogers' sense of humor will crack you up as well. It was a pleasant and informative book. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Beginners, November 27, 2000

Eric Elbaz (New York City) - See all my reviews
I looked in to many Java 2 books before making this selection.

You may ask why did I choose this book out of all the others? When making purchase I always have three determining factors, How well is this book written? Will I want read this book? (Will it keep my attention long enough to actually be worth what I paid?) And finally price.

This book met all these criteria's quite well. Rogers explains topics with a pleasant sense of humor. And you actually understand what he's talking about.

This book is relatively cheap... you defiantly get your bang for the buck.

THIS BOOK IS PERFECT FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO KNOW WHAT Java 2 IS ALL ABOUT!

I definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars 24 hours of Pure Java Education, July 6, 1999
By A Customer
Before I read this book I was very unexperienced with Java. After reading it I found that I could write small applications and some applets. This was a tremendous leap for me and now I am contimplating on buying the Teach yourself Java in 21 days book. Some code errors exist but the online documantation is up to date and very helpful. I recommend this book for a beginner intrested in Java. This is not a boring, lecture clustered, book. The author does a fine job of keeping the readers attention. For those with some Java experience, this would be mostly review, but none-the-less a good book. By best reguards to Mr. Cadenhead, the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to start, April 8, 1999
By A Customer
I haven't read this book -- I read its predecessor Teach Yourself Java 1.1 in 24 Hours. I felt that it was a great way for me to get started with Java. It made things very easy for me!

The book doesn't get terribly deep... at the end, you will want to get another book to learn more. After finishing Java 1.1 in 24 Hours, they recommended that I buy Teach Yourself Java 1.1 in 21 Days, because it goes into more depth. Unfortunately, that book is much more confusing and disorganized, and also makes a lot of assumptions about what you know.

The 21 Days book seems to be written for people who are already professional programmers in other languages. The 24 Hours book is great at starting from scratch and explaining everything. Rogers Cadenhead writes in a clear style that is also light and amusing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author is dead on, February 18, 2000

This book is not for everyone and was never meant to be. The Author is trying to hit individuals who have never programmed. He succeded in this. It does drop off a little bit in Chapt. 10 but JAVA programming does this to everybody. This book is not meant to be a reference. See O'Rielly for that. My only complaint is that he stuck to Swing to teach readers hot to create GUI's. There are other, older, and more stable methods than Swing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book to begin learning Java 2, July 27, 2000
By
This book is a solid learning tool. I have to agree with the reviewer that said the book does get tough after chapter 9. The vast majority of the code I've tried works. This book does a good job of getting you up to speed on Java. I would suggest using this book as a starting point and going else where to get really indepth information. As far as getting a clue about Java, this book is definite buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good book to begin with!, May 26, 2000

This book is a very good introdcution to JAVA and help you LEARN the LANGUAGE rather that give you examples. I learn better with doing a lot of examples, but this book does a great job for the way it was meant to be, a Language teaching book, rather than an exersice book. It does have examples, wich I've found good in order to test your knowlege. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR COPY AND PASTE ME (STEAL ME) script, don't get this book. This is for someone who wants to be able to wite their OWN scripts in a matter of days.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book for the new programmers, February 26, 2002

I start programming in C then C++, when I removed from C language to C++ I got a 3 hours lecture then I bought a huge book about C++ as a reference. But when I start in Java I couldn't get a lecture on it so I tried to find a small book to teach me the basics of the Java, so I bought this book.

This book is good you can finish it in seven or eight days it gives you the basics that you looking for. But the problem of this book is, it's start from Zero. He takes a lot of time and paper to teach you what is the meaning of program, compiler and interpreter, then he takes more time to teach you the "meaning" of int, float, string, array, etc.... After that he takes 3 chapters about the OOP most of the contents of these chapters gives the meaning of OO, which every C++ programmer know these things.

So in my opinion if you are a C++ programmer and you can find someone who can gives you a lesson on Java it is better than reading this book

Finally this book gives you just the basics so if you want to be a professional in Java you need other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love Sams!, October 16, 2001
Let's be for real... this book is NOT going to make you a Java guru... you're not going to be a Code Jedi in 24 hours. What this book does do is lay the foundations upon which to grow.

When I picked up this book, I hadn't programmed since I was a kid with a Commodore! However, this book laid out the basics, included some varied examples that built off of different techniques, and created lessons that you could extrapolate from. Since devouring this book, I have bought more advanced tuts on Java - I consider myself healithly INTERMEDIATE now - however, it was this book that served as my spring board. It gave me the info I needed in digestible chunks and didn't send me scrambling around for answers when I'm hacking out source code in the wee hours of the morning, Mountain Dew by my side.

Since then, I have gone on to learn some C++, JavaScript, VBScript, Perl, Asp, Jsp. And like another reviewer commented, a lot of the structures in the languages are so similar that you find yourself recycling the synapses instead of creating new paths. This book was a great building block and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in learning Java or object oriented programming in general!

Happy Reading...
