Book Description

Teach Yourself... May 13, 1999
Sams Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours is a tutorial aimed at making the Linux beginner a more effective and productive user of the operating system. Most books in this category are more of a general reference in nature and are designed to cover Linux in general. But every Linux distribution is different--file locations can change, commands can be a little different, etc., meaning the readers of those books may not find answers specific to their installation. This book uses the effective Sams Teach Yourself format to instruct you how to: install the operating system, configure hardware, and effectively use the tools that come with the Red Hat distribution included on the CD-ROM.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

While this guide won't make you an expert in Linux, it will explain how to get Red Hat Linux to work and how to do basic things with it. Organized into 24 lessons that take about an hour apiece, this book helps you ensure that your system can handle Linux and walks you through the process of installing Red Hat Linux and the Xfree86 windowing system. Ball's coverage of installation is rather weak, through paying only cursory attention to this confusing process. From there, however, Ball hits his stride in detailing the ins and outs of file-system commands, shells, Internet connections (by PPP), various Internet tools, and administration. For example, in the lesson on graphics programs, Ball explores the most popular graphics program of recent memory: the GNU Image Manipulation Program, affectionately known to its users as the GIMP. Similarly, he covers the popular but cryptic Emacs in his lesson on text editing. In brief, this book introduces you to Linux and the world of Unix tools in a palatable, easy-to-follow way. --David Wall

From the Publisher

Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours is a tutorial aimed at making the Linux beginner more effective and productive users of the operating system. Most books in this category are more of a general reference in nature and are designed to cover Linux in general. Well, every Linux distribution is different - file locations can change, commands can be a little different, etc. This means the readers of those books may not find answers specific to their installation. This book will use the effective Teach Yourself format to instruct the reader how to: install the operating system, configure their hardware, and effectively use the tools that come with the Red Hat distribution included on the CD-ROM.

- More than 56% of all Linux users are new to the operating system. This book is for them

- It will do what other books at this price level fail to do: provide the readers with an easy-to-read, step-by-step approach to learning and using Linux

- The CD-ROM delivers Red Hat Linux V5.0 a $49.95 value

1.0 out of 5 stars A BAD BOOK. VAGUE. INCONSISTANT. WORTHLESS., October 9, 1999
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours (Paperback)
This book is a vague look at Linux that answers almost no questions and is practically useless in its mission, which is to teach newbies Linux. The auther was in a hurry to publish it and as a result is vague and misleading, skims over important issues, and fluffs off everything else.

3.0 out of 5 stars The book is ok and thats about it, September 13, 1999
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours (Paperback)
This book is ok and that's about it. It's one of those novel, get what you need fast type books like any of the dummies or idiot series books but it leaves quite a bit to be desired. The author uses commands that are not available with the version of linux on the CD. While yes the flavor of linux is easy to install. I think not telling people to turn off the plug and play portion of the bios to get certain devices on your machine to work and merely pawning this (like setting up your sound card)off to other companies almost insulting. So instead of giving you solid answers to the troublsum setup questions it avoids them completly. Mr. Ball has allot of improvmets he can make to this book. But overall its ok and thats about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Linux, March 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams' Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours (Paperback)
Recently I purchased Sams' Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours starter kit and found it to be a good introduction to Linux but more emphasis should be placed on the Installation of Redhat. For example if linux doesn't recognize your cdrom there is no explanation on how to install linux by FTP, the harddrive or NFS. Also some of the programs in the book do not work at all or properly. When I installed the xspread program some of the libraries were missing. The chapter on System Admistration is a good introduction to admistrating your system but more emphasis should be placed on using the control panel as well as formating diskettes in linux. In conclusion I think that this book is an excellent introduction to Linux but more exphsis should be placed on explaning the topics in greater detail.
