4.0 out of 5 stars Passed the Exam
This was my first exam, Windows 98. I used only this book and I passed. It was easy to read and follow. The review questions were very helpful. I read a lot of reviews that said not to use just one book, but that is what I did. I also used the Transceder practice exams. I would say that 99% of what was on the exam was covered in the book, but that the exam was...

OK, here is the scoop ... 1. i have been using W98 as my laptop client for a few months, but never done any real work with it other than as a mindless user. 2. i studied this book for 4 weeks, plus the microsoft readiness review, which was a waste of $ 3. i found the exam WAY tougher than i thought (this is my 4th MCSE exam) but i passed with 74%. in general the book...

I would say that 99% of what was on the exam was covered in the book, but that the exam was VERY hard. If I had not known the material so well, I would not have been able to apply the knowledge to the questions on the exam.

OK, here is the scoop ... 1. i have been using W98 as my laptop client for a few months, but never done any real work with it other than as a mindless user. 2. i studied this book for 4 weeks, plus the microsoft readiness review, which was a waste of $ 3. i found the exam WAY tougher than i thought (this is my 4th MCSE exam) but i passed with 74%. in general the book is OK, though it spends an awful lot of space going thru not-that-useful screen prints. i liked Sam's TCP/IP book much better. anyway, as for studying: i took 70-059 first so i was good on IP, DNS, WINS, DHCP etc ... but if you are not, concentrate on that area as this book does not emphasize it near as much as the exam did. the exam had far more "simulation" questions than any of the others i have done, but they were well presented. and they did not require you to memorize individual applets and tabs, though of course having a general idea of their layouts helps. the test included 4-5 questions that i had absolutely no clue of and didnt find one even after in this or the MS books. stuff about CD ROMs and boot problems. this is to be expected on any MCSE exam. any questions (that wont violate the nondisclosure, of course!), feel free to email me.

The Windows 98 exam is very tough with lots of simulation and scenario questions. Sams book on MCSE Windows 98 is an excellent book to learn the more advanced topics needed for the exam. I though I knew a lot about Windows 98 after using it for a few years until I read this book. The exam is heavy on using Windows 98 as a client in a Windows NT4.0 or Novell domain. You must learn everything in the network properties dialog box to pass the exam and the book does a good job on this with lots of diagrams and hands on exercises. Other important topics covered well are TCP/IP setup including DHCP & WINS, file systems, installing, boot sequence, dial up networking, registry, printer installing/control, hardware and user profiles, network neighborhood, browser functions (using netbios broadcasts), and system policies. Everthing you need to pass is in this book, however for an extra margin of safety I recommend investing in Exam Cram also. The test questions in Sams book are helpful, but the ones in Exam Cram do a better job of telling if you know your stuff enough to take the exam. The writing style of the author is enjoyable with lots of important points boxed off for emphasis and easy review later. I also recommend the book to anyone who just wants to learn a lot more about advanced topics of Windows 98.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!!!, August 16, 1999
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 Days (Paperback)
Perfect book for this test. I own 2 other books, they were good but does not compare to this book. This is all you need. The book covers the exam object perfectly and it's extremely easy to read. This book does not waste your time on stuff you don't need to know. TRUST ME!! passed the exam on my first try with a 818 (studied only 14 days).

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, July 9, 2000

This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 Days (Paperback)
This Sam's study guide is comprehensive, well-written, and well-illustrated. I have only a few, minor criticisms of it:

-The chapter on Netware is pretty good, but it could have been expanded upon with more detail, especially from the perspective of Netware.

-The instructions for setting up server-based profiles on an NT machine could have been more clearly delineated on page 267. Some of the instructions apply only to the client, and the others apply only to the NT machine.

Usually, when I'm finished reading a study guide, I will throw the study guide away, or give it away, or I will burn it. This Sam's book falls into a different category altogether: keeper.

Chow, baby......

4.0 out of 5 stars it's a pretty good book, June 21, 2000

This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 Days (Paperback)
I used this book as my main resource to study for the Win 98 exam. It's well-written and clear, but 14 days is a bit aggressive; I took my own notes so each 1-day chapter took me 2-3 days. Along with my knowledge (esp. TCP/IP) from the Networking Essentials exam, and my general experience with Windows 98 and networking, I was able to pass the exam on the first try. The actual exam was MUCH tougher than the practice exam in the book and the Transcender exams; I'd still recommend supplementing the book's exam with the Transcender exams. LOTS of simulation questions on the real thing, though. I was rarely totally "in the dark" on any question.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding BOOK!, February 28, 2000
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 Days (Paperback)
This book is a must for those that wish to pass the Microsoft Windows 98 Exam. It is true that I`ve read Microsoft MOC too, but I could say this book had almost 90% of what the exam required me to pass. I passed with a 890 grade and I thank God first and then this book. Passing the exam was a breeze...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough by itself, February 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 Days (Paperback)
I found the book to be informative and helpful. This is my first microsoft exam. I just don't feel that this book by itself was enough to prepare me. I'm finding the Exam Cram book much more useful.
