Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Give this book a day, and you'll learn how to use Word 97. Once they've been reassured that the 24 hours need not be consecutive, most beginning Word users will find this a straightforward proposition. The book organizes 24 more-or-less discrete hour-long lessons designed to help the completely new user learn to master Word. Each lesson takes on a new set of features, and the choices are useful and correct. The book goes into an hour's worth of detail on topics such as mail merge, tables, macros, drawing tools, tools for managing large multi-part documents, groupware features, and even progresses to a discussion of using Word to author HTML documents for the World Wide Web.

Not bad for a beginner, even if it really does take longer than a single day. The book divides and conquers the learning curve by slicing it up into 24 manageable chunks. For those who need to learn Word in a few short easy lessons, this is a solid choice.

From Library Journal

Both of these books from Sams break up learning Word and Excel into 24 one-hour lessons focused on gestalts of actions such as installing, formatting, working with graphics, and publishing data to the web. The tables of contents and indexes are long, a big help for people who know what they want to do. These books will be useful to both first-time users and advanced learners moving to new versions of the software.

This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Word 97 in 24 Hours (Paperback)
I count on our local library to review and work with tutorial texts on computer software before I make a final purchase. This book was a real FIND for me. I am simultaneously teaching myself Exel 97, Publisher, Quicken and Word 97. And of course I am doing at least five computer projects at a time and working full time. I purchase for my personal library one or two books to serve as my key resources on each program. This is my Word favorite. It has enough graphics (pictures, not sketches) to guide the user through each topic. I never found myself confused about how to accomplish a task. More importantly, it is very easy to find your way through this book. Both the Table of Contents and the Index are accessible to a beginning learner. I'VE BEEN FRUSTRATED LONG ENOUGH WITH THE .....FOR DUMMIES series to appreciate resources which are truly sensitive to my needs as a learner. The REAL WORLD EXAMPLES which are included are excellent activity-centered units which bo! th summarize previous information and introduce new concepts. There is a good balance between information and application in this book. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
