First as a technical writer creating product documentation, then as a service consultant answering customer questions on the phone, and finally as the leader of the DB2 certification program creating certification exams to validate DB2 product skills. Five years ago, Susan wrote and published the first edition of Teach Yourself DB2 Universal Database in 21 Days. Since then she has helped other authors write and publish their books. In many cases, she has reviewed their books and provided guidance as to the style and topics to cover. As part of her job as certification lead, Susan speaks to many people who are trying to learn DB2 either for the first time or for a new release. She has gathered ideas from them to learn how people like to learn and the books they like to learn from. She also helps people get the skills they need to pass the certification exams and understand what is necessary both in terms of content and the different styles of learning. Bill Wong has spent the last 18 years working in various positions within IBM. Bill has worked with the DB2 product since its inception, working as a systems programmer, DBA, product planner, and as a technical sales specialist. Bill has also spent time teaching courses on database technology, strategic I/T planning, systems analysis and design, and decision theory. He is the author of many articles on DB2 technology and speaks frequently at technical conferences and customer sites around the world. Bill is currently the Program Director for Information Grid Solutions, and is responsible for helping customers understand IBM's latest directions in Grid computing, and how DB2 might fit into that environment. © Copyright Pearson Education. 4.0 out of 5 stars A practical quick introduction, June 22, 2004
A very practical and focused book, that can quickly get you up and running with the basics of using dB2. There are two roles described here. One is that of the Database Administrator. You'd be the person to act as sysadmin of a dB2 database. Doing the install and later creating users with various privileges, and in general keeping an eye on things. Corresponds exactly to being sysadmin of a computer.

The second role is that of a dB2 user. Here, a user is really a programmer. She can be expected to design a database, and to then implement it in dB2.

One thing about the book is that it does not really emphasise a separation between the two roles in the overall narrative. Sure, some sections are exclusively for one role. But the overlap in knowledge is extensive. The book correctly requires you to know both roles, to be more effective in either. This is a key difference between dB2 and the general usage of a computer. For the latter, a sysadmin does not need to know the programming languages that a user-programmer has expertise in.

The discussion about SQL itself is pretty rudimentary. You get enough of the basics to be able to use these quickly in dB2, for simple applications. A pragmatic approach to SQL. Which is what the typical SAMS reader probably needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive but can be improved, August 24, 1998

It is a very good book to start learning DB2. However this book doesn't cover the client configuration issues on Unix platforms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Learning DB2, September 27, 2007
I found this book very helpful in learning DB2. Before reading, I knew the basics of SQL, but little or nothing about DB2. I did have to read another book to prepare for certification, but one thing this book gave me that the certification guide did not was hands on experience with DB2.
