Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Cassel and Hart open with answers to the question everyone has about Windows 98: what's new? After a quick tour, they get into the details of file management and the use of the Recycle Bin. Fonts, printing, and multimedia come next, followed by customization. Software installation and execution--including MS-DOS programs--get copious attention. The chapter on stand-alone systems also covers both system maintenance and management of multiple users.

The authors provide instructions for connecting to the global network via a modem, then go into detail on Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, NetMeeting, and FrontPage Express. Personal Web Server gets better-than-average coverage. Cassel and Hart wrap up with information on attaching a Windows 98 machine to a local area network and installing the operating system on a portable machine. Altogether, you'll find the answers to most fairly basic Windows 98 questions in this book.

The book's style combines step-by-step instructions with explanatory prose, much of which seems to result from the authors' real-life experience and experimentation. A short glossary, questions, answers, and exercises wrap up each chapter. --David Wall

From the Publisher

Examination of product features is much more in depth and detailed than the general user level. The primary notable addition to Windows 98 over Windows 95 is the inclusion of ActiveX controls in both the ActiveDesktop and Internet Explorer 4.0. ActiveDesktop, ActiveX, and IE4 work together to allow the user to access the desktop (and everything in/on their machine) through a browser interface. The distinction between files stored locally and those stored out on the Internet on someone else's webserver will blur. Web pages or parts of Web pages can be placed on the users' desktop and actively viewed and manipulated. This book is intended to allow knowledgeable users to understand and effectively use the powerful features built into the product. The book includes 14 chapters in keeping with its 14 day theme. Chapters include in depth coverage of installing and navigating Windows 98 , customizing the Desktop, adding hardware and software, using multimedia, fonts, printing, faxing, telephony, networking, and mobile computing, conducting system maintenance, and fine tuning the registry. Chapters also highlight new features in Windows 98 (including the new ActiveDesktop and TV Viewer) for those moving up from earlier versions of Windows. Each chapter ends with Q&A, Quiz, and Exercise sections. The style is relaxed and friendly. - Bridges the gap between the Microsoft Resource Kit technical reference and the 'Intro to' books.

- New features and topics for Windows 98 include: ActiveDesktop, Internet Explorer as an integrated browser, support for new hardware types, FAT32, improved setup, better system tools, Windows System Update, Windows Scripting Host, DCOM, and more

- Teaches Windows 98 intermediate to advanced topics using the format of the best-selling Teach Yourself series

3.0 out of 5 stars Windows 98 for preschoolers!, May 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sams Teach Yourself Windows 98 in 21 Days (Paperback)
Despite this books 600+ pages, it's probably the most non-technical computer book I've ever read. It's clearly geared towards the "just opened the box" set, but, lets face it, not many people fall into that category with Win 98 nowadays. Anytime there's ever any mention of anything that seems technical, such as the Windows registery, the author simply says "this is technical, don't mess with it."

If you have absolutely no computing experience whatsoever, consider this book. If you want something with any real meat, look elsewhere.

This is one of the best handbooks for beginners to study Windows 98 on your own without knowing anything about computers - easy to read, descriptive, not requiring additional references, complete, with glossary and also many example illustrations in 21 chapters - each for 1 day (or more) of reading.
