Product Description

Style: Channel N2 | Size: Earset

The Samson AirLine Micro Wireless Earset System gives you wireless freedom without the Airline Micro utilizes the latest in lithium ion battery technology and small, high-quality audio and RF components, representing a breakthrough that brings freedom and convenience to a new level of performance. The result is not only our smallest wireless system, but also Samson's most comfortable, reliable and versatile system ever. No more changing batteries! To eliminate continually changing batteries, Samson has designed this UHF wireless system to be fully rechargeable, supplying lithium ion rechargeable batteries and USB DC power inputs for both the AH2 ear set transmitter and AR2 receiver. A handy docking station for the receiver also provides a USB DC input and a 3.5mm balanced audio output. Because of these convenient recharging capabilities, the days of constantly changing the batteries in your wireless system are over. Quality Microphone with no more belt packs by the wayside, this system employs the AH2, a single ear set transmitter for complete freedom and uninhibited movement. The transmitter features an omnidirectional microphone to ensure your voice is picked up and amplified even during periods of fast, heavy movement. This makes the AirLine Micro system ideal for fitness instructors as well as high-energy performers and presenters. Plus, its water resistant design protects the mic and transmitter from moisture and perspiration that can accumulate during intensely active performances. Despite its modest size and inconspicuous appearance, the AR2 receiver boasts meticulous engineering that will provide professional sound reproduction and exceptional reliability. Like the AH2 transmitter, the AR2 also houses a rechargeable battery that will offer about 7 hours of operation. A 3.5mm balanced mic/line level output and USB DC power input round out the features on this pioneering receiver.

REVIEW UPDATE 4/4/12: Contact the manufacturer to determine which channel will work for your area. There are 5 channels available and one will work for your area but not in all areas. I purchased the channel N5 which does not work properly in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Samson Technical Support is very helpful and will save trouble of exchanging the unit for the correct frequency, of which I am doing right now: 1-800-372-6766. Samson Airline Micro Camera Mountable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System - Samson Model SWAM2SLM10 Frequency Channel N1 (642.375 MHz)

I did a lot of research on a wireless microphone system for my Canon 60D Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD (Body Only) and came up with some basic factors to consider: UHF or VHF, durability of the unit and cost. In looking at all the websites and from what friends have told me, stick with UHF since it is much clearer and fairly static free. As for durability, I wanted something more than plastic and most high end units appeared to be more durable. As for cost, less expensive VHF units had a lot of plastic and the very expensive UHF units were just expensive. I thought about going cheap then it hit me: what am I doing spending good money on a Canon 60D, using L lenses and wanting to put a cheap wireless system that may or may not work. So I stumbled across the Samson Airline Micro on the Amazon site.

It came with everything pictured in a nice case that is not pictured.

The Samson Airline Micro is very light and portable. I used it for 2 months (Oct - Dec 2010) to teach an aerobics class 5 times per week. It was a bit difficult in the beginning to learn how to fit the earpiece around my ear so that it would stay in place during the entire one hour class, but after a few weeks, I learned how to adjust it so that it would stay in place. I really liked how it fit only on one ear so that when I laid my head on the floor, there was no danger of injuring the mic, as is true with other wireless headsets. I also liked that it had rechargeable internal batteries for both the headset and the transmitter. The only issue is that only 2 months after using it, it stopped working. It would work for 15 minutes and then suddenly stop transmitting sound, even though it was fully charged and all the lights were on saying it had power and reception. It is now back at Samson for repair under warranty.

We tried this product in a music store first (a little pricey there). We needed it for a small church so that we can not only amplify the sermon presenter, but so we can have a good quality digital signal for recording the message on the hard drive.

Results?
Pluses:
1. The sound quality is as good as the big names (Shure, Audio Technica, etc). Great for recording. Surprisingly clear for the price. Good response.
2. No wires on the transmitter! Just fit it to your ear and go.
3. Internal batterys on tranmitter and receiver, they charge up using a USB computer connection or a wall plug.
4. Price. For a small church, we can afford to get another one which I am ordering now. Just be sure that you order a different frequency for the second one. I think there are 6 different frequencies available (you can't program a frequency, it's built-in)

minuses:
1. The mute switch on the earpiece is awkward. You can't see it (it's on your ear). You press it once to mute, but you don't really know if it is muted. We just leave the transmitter live all the time and trust the sound guy to turn it off at the right times. A little risky.
2. If you turn the power off on the transmitter and the power is still on for the receiver, you get a loud hiss noise in your sound system because of the loss of carrior frequency. We leave the transmitter on until we turn off the receiver first.
3. Not many frequency choices. You are limited to 6 units max. That's OK with us.
4. Not sure if it would work well for an active presentation, like aerobics. It stays on the ear but I don't know how well it would do jumping around or quick turning or twisting.

Overall, I give it a 4 because it really is a nice unit, just a couple of quirky things. Like I said - I'm ordering a second one today because we are happy with it. It really is perfect for our church presenter. I recommend it for the right application.

AUDIO POSTING 2/19/13: I finally uploaded an audio sample from this unit (thanks for the prompting). This is from an actual classroom situation where the teacher is going around the room checking on student work groups. The visual is obscured for confidentiality but the dialogue is entertaining if you know Shakespeare. Distance from transmitter to receiver is about 30'. The mic is attached to clothing about 6" below the teacher's mouth and picks up the students' voices. I use these units quite often with the set-up as indicated below and the results are clear. Enjoy!
