Unique mic - prematurely released.,
By Robin Ray "redrobin62" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samson G Track USB Condenser Microphone (Personal Computers)
This mic is ahead of its time because of its unique features - it's a large diaphragm condenser mic with a built-in line/guitar input and output for headphone or speaker monitoring. By comparison, the sE Electronics USB2200a omits the line/guitar input. The problem with this mic is its useability. It's noisy as hell, and it's not this mic's fault. Sticky noise, and a high-pitched whine, are inherent in the USB signal. sE Electronic's USB2200a has circuitry which eliminates this noise - Samson doesn't. As it is, The G-Track is only useful, in a professional situation, for cleanly recording instruments which emit high SPL's - amps, drums, etc. It's useless for vocals, acoustic guitar, and so on. With a standing noise floor of about -45dB at 1Khz this mic cannot be taken seriously. Still, all of this technology is in its infancy. I'm keepping my finger crossed that somewhere along the way Samon will release a USB noise canceller/suppressor. Until then, The G-Track is more of a curiosity/toy than a useful adjunct to anyone's professional recording studio.

I received this item yesterday and tried it out this am on my video editing computer (win xp Pro) core 2 processor. The microphone worked without problems. Contrary to other reviews on this mic, I found the sound to be fine for a mic in this price range. The monitor function worked with adequate volume for my headphones. The frequency reponse was pretty good (again for a mic of this price range). I have not tried the other inputs yet, mostly because I have no real need for them, however I can see my using this mic on my laptop computer and in that case may try to plug in my bass and/or guitar to see how it works. I would recommened this microphone to anyone who needs to do voice-overs or who would just like a mixerless solution to getting good sound into their computer.

I bought the G-TRack about a month ago to use at my school. Works fine on PC laptop and old Mac G5 tower. Sound quality is not great, levels are generally low, but you get what you pay for-- in this case, probably more! A decent mic, or interface, etc., on their own would cost more than the G-Track, not to mention mic cables. A good one-stop starting point for newbies interested in home recording.

I found the G Track to be a great value. I found it to be an above average microphone. And with a built in interface it allows you to produce a very nice Youtube video, with somewhat professional results.
I also found the bundled Cakewalk software to be a great bonus value. For the money this is a great microphone, with the added features and software, it's even better. I'd recommend the G track to a friend. The only negative I have is that the output from the microphone when used as an audio output device seems a little underpowered. I find I have to have the level turned up fully most of the time when playing back tracks that were recorded at the proper level. However, this could be the result of my computer or OS, so I can't say for certain it's a problem with the G Track. So I guess if enough people comment on this problem, then it is a problem with the G Track! But I really wouldn't give up my G Track now that I have it. I'm very pleased with the purchase.

This mic simply doesnt work on a mac. I tried to get both my mac mini and macbook to recognize it - and it won't work. My PC can recognize it just fine. Sorry, but that won't cut it. Wish I never bought it. Most frustrating thing ever!
