Samsonite Silhouette 11 Upright Garment Bag, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Samsonite Silhouette 11 Upright Garment Bag (Apparel)
This bag caries on just fine. I compared this to the Travel Pro Platinum 6 22 inch Garments to Go Bag. These two bags, unlike most others that offer a "suitor" actually have separate sections for suits and folded items. This is the feature I was going for. While the Travel Pro appears to be of higher quality, and for that reason I would have preferred it, the fact is it is a true 22 inch bag. The Samsonite is actually 21.25 inches and a shade thinner. It really does make all the diference for carry on. The corner pockets in the suit section are not very uaable because the folded suit also ends up occupying this same space. (The Travel Pro doesn't include them and now I see why). This is a nice bag and I can get 2 suits and shirts in the suit side. The other section is large enough for the remaining necessities for 3 to 4 days on the road. Only been on two trips so I cannot comment on durability but is seems to be of mid quality plus and I expect it to hold up.

so-so... great idea but functionality is under question, January 24, 2011
I am a frequent traveller, usually overseas and usually on business class. I need a bag that I can carry-on (along with my computer bag) and which will fit 1 suit, 4 dress-shirts, 5 sets of underwear/shirts/socks, 1 light running shoes, and 2-3 other shirts. And maybe a light sweater...
The good news is that all of these things fit in this bag. it is relatively light and the fabric does NOT look cheap. You will not have the worst bag in the lounge... :)
Now the so-so news:
(1) there is no handle on the bottom, which makes it more difficult to lift. I am stron guy so I have no problems but my previous (cheaper bag) had a handle.
(2) the suit still get wrinkled even when packed by a packing-freak like me (I take a lot of care). Sometimes I just fold my suit and put it on the top of a regular 21 inch carry one and the wrinkle amount is comparable. So by wrinkle-wise, this is not too superior. I also put 3 shirts with the suit and the wrinkles got worse. :(
(3) the side handle is a pullable fabric handle. While it makes it slightly more ergonomic, when I tried to slip my fingers underneath the handle to pull it our, I actually got a tiny cut. I was doing fast on the plane because there were people behnind me and probably could have avoided it if done carefully.
Now the bad news:
This will not fit in the carry-on bin of most planes, UNLESS you set it sideways. It is just under 22 inches - which is ok BUT because of the suit compartment (which is hard material and does not bend), one side of the bag is like a box. Most airplane bins are oval shaped bins and therefore there is a mismatch in shapes. An you cant use force to squeeze it, because one side of the bag made of hard material to prevent the suits from wrinkling. I've flown on Boeing 737-400, then 777, then a smaller 737. It only fit on 737-400 barely, on the rest I had to put it sideways. WHen you are flying business class, I guess it is OK unless the plane is packed full. But on economy class - it would be very difficult to find a bin to put this sideways. I compare it with my older 21 inch carry-on bag which fits 90% of the time when traveling on such planes.
So my verdict is: get a 21' normal carry-on bag unless you are flying 1st class or not-packed business class routes. the idea for this bag is nice... but it limits the carry-on-ability.

Decent carry-on garment bag, December 29, 2010
I got sick of carrying my suit by hand on a hanger when flying, so I started looking for a garment bag that I could roll and that I could also comfortably carry onto a plane. After using this suitcase twice (once to haul a suit around for a week and another time as a normal suitcase), here are my impressions:
PROS
* Fits in well in overhead luggage space with the top handle facing out - now I don't have to worry about finding an empty overhead bin to fit my carry-on suitcase in sideways
* Dedicated compartment to hold a suit separate from other clothes and/or shoes
* One of the lighter carry-on pieces I could find makes it easy to carry by hand when needed
* Rolls smoothly and comfortably with a comfortable handle
* Easy access to front zipper pocket to hold liquids bag for security check along with some magazines
CONS
* Suit jacket has to fold over twice and sleeves/sides have to be tucked in slightly to fit (European size 50 jacket) without the zipper potentially catching the suit - higher chance for wrinkling
* Small zippered compartments in the garment bag cannot be removed and cannot be filled to capacity to close the top of the garment bag
Overall, I'm happy with the suitcase. I wish there was a way to open up the section separating the top and bottom compartments so that I could fit taller items in the bag when not carrying a suit, but it does what's expected. I would have given this 5 stars if it could fit my suit more comfortably, but Samsonite did what was needed to make this fit as a carry-on.
