Nice compact with lot of features and takes decent pictures, December 5, 2009
This review is from: Samsung 12MP Dig Camera 5X Opt 3.0IN LCD Red (Electronics)
Purchased this camera about a week ago. It has a lot of features and the picture quality is good. The HD video is very good. I was impressed by the video clarity and the fact that you can zoom in and out while in video mode. The only thing I did not care for was that you cannot change the ISO setting in all of the picture modes. I believe you can only change it in one or two modes. I feel the ISO is to high in the other modes and adds some noise, but once you turn the ISO down it takes really good pictures. Nice 5x optical lens and great battery life. It's a great value for the money and very portable. Fits in shirt or pants pocket easily. I chose this camera over the Canon SD1200 IS and don't regret it.

Samsung SL720, December 8, 2009

I am revising this review to reflect dealsings with Samsung customer service. Ordering a cable that connects my camera to the computer for both downloading pictures and charging the battery was a nightmare. The old cable was defective. Three wrong cables, 5 long month and countless clueless customer service reps later i finally got the correct cable. The reps were rude and did not care one bit about the customer. As a result i will never own another Samsung product and would not recomend them to anyone!

Just Short of Greatness, January 12, 2010
This review is from: Samsung 12MP Dig Camera 5X Opt 3.0IN LCD Red (Electronics)
This camera is frustratingly short of being wonderful, especially for the money.
It takes great pictures that are surprisingly and consistently good, though they lean a little towards being over-saturated with color and a touch "soft" around the edges. The flash is a little strong as well (slightly overexposed?), though that's certainly better than being too weak. As far as the pictures go, we actually preferred this camera to a similar and much more expensive Canon (sd780) because it was more consistent at getting good clear pictures than the Canon, which was hit-or-miss (though when it's good, it's great). On both cameras, we stuck with the "auto" setting.
The video is quite honestly stunning for a camera this affordable - very clear, colorful and stable, though very noisy in low light situations. The thing that KILLED this camera for us was the AUDIO that went with the video; it's terrible! It doesn't sound as if they used any dynamic compression at all, and as a result, the only way you can hear any normally spoken dialogue recorded with the video is by cranking your (PC) speakers all the way up, which then causes louder sounds in the recording to be INCREDIBLY loud during playback! To make matters worse, when turning up the audio that loud to hear the video, there is a very audible mechanized "purring" sound, like the cpu cycles in the camera are getting caught in the recording somehow (we verified it wasn't our PC btw). This is the issue that caused us to send the camera back for a different model; if it wasn't for this, we would have absolutely kept it! (What's the point of filming your 2-yr-old's first words if you can't even hear them?).
Something else to note; this camera allows you to zoom while recording video, which is awesome! (we're looking at you Canon >:-( ) What's NOT so awesome is the automatic audio mute that occurs while zooming. Clearly this was to conceal the motor noise made by the lens as it moves, but we concluded without a doubt that we'd rather have something rather than nothing as the effect during playback is pretty jarring. It would be nice to be able to turn this off, but then you'd still be left with the problems above.
