Review for the Samsung SyncMaster 151s,
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung 151S 15" LCD Monitor (Ivory) (Personal Computers)
The Samsung SyncMaster 151s is my first flat screen LCD monitor ever. It is very light, too. It's only about 9 pounds. From what I've seen here, I am very impressed with this monitor. The screen is very bright and sharp, and the colors are amazing. There is no ghosting or any dead pixels with this analog-only monitor. DVD movies, games, and the text look impressive with the SyncMaster 151s. Setting up the monitor was very easy. The buttons are funky. They look weird, and they are on the right side of the monitor, in a vertical fashion. The only thing this monitor doesn't have is a DVI connector, which would give you digital video. The base is slighty unsteady, also, but it's not a big issue at all. With the SyncMaster 151s, you get excellent service and support. Samsung's website also has the latest drivers, manuals, and product registration. You will receive a three-year warning (which also includes the backlight). Pros: · Bright, sharp display with rich colors. · Excellent tech support, with a warranty of three years. · Wide viewing angles. Cons: · Lacks DVI connector. · Slightly unsteady base. Overall: 92% Conclusion: If you are looking into joining the flat screen LCD wagon, the SyncMaster 151s is the perfect monitor for you. Gamers will actually be impressed with the analog-only monitor. No ghosting, no washed-away colors, no dead pixels, no problems.

If you're looking for the best no-frills 15" LCD, the Samsung 151S is probably it. I checked out a huge computer mall in Taipei (NOVA), and I must have seen at least 10-15 different LCD models, including NEC, Viewsonic, Eizo, and several no-name Asian brands. The 151S stood above the rest with the most vibrant and natural looking picture, and also the most aesthetically pleasing exterior. Once you have the right settings for the "Image Lock", the text is so perfect you'll be wondering why people pay extra for a DVI interface. There is really nothing bad I can say about the 151S, which truly amazes me because I am usually incredibly nitpicky about monitors.

I don't have a lot of desk space in my small Brooklyn apartment, so I knew I had to get an LCD monitor for the computer I was building. I didn't have the money to splurge on something top of the line, so I decided to go with this bargain model. Boy it would have been a mistake to go with something more expensive! This monitor will not disappoint, whether you want it for games or just general computing. This monitor has vivid colors, great contrast, and very bright, even backlighting across the screen entire screen. No dead pixels either. I'd recommend it to anyone.

* Please note that this review is for the black version of this product, which should essentialy be the same thing. As such, I have also posted this review under the listing for the black version of the product.I must confess...after I ordered this, I wondered if I should have just invested in a less expensive CRT, especially since I play a lot of computer games, and LCD's traditionally haven't had the best reputation for gaming, due mostly to technical limitations causing "ghosting" - sort of a temporary after-image. Once this thing arrived and I plugged it in, however, any such notion vanished from my mind. Bear in mind that I have not had a lot of experience with LCD monitors, as I'm sure most people haven't. I did a bit of research on various sites, including this one. I had it whittled down to a few different choices and I still wasn't entirely sure which monitor I wanted to get. The swing vote came when I stumbled across CNET's recent pick (January) as this as their number one buy for a 15 inch LCD. The image is bright, it's crisp, and I can see textures that I never even knew were there on my old CRT. I have not one problem gaming with this. I have been playing Warcraft 3, Thief 2, and other games with this thing and they are running smoothly and better than I have ever seen them before. Actually, I should say that at fist, I thought I noticed a slight "ghosting" in Warcraft 3, but I see no such thing now, so make of that what you will; perhaps it was a case of seeing what you expect to see or something. Anyway, I have absolutely no problem playing Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, a somewhat obscure but good first-person shooter, and I notice no ghosting or anything of the sort. You can actually see extremely well in Thief 2, which is saying something since the game is quite dark by design. (I actually had problems with this darkness on my old Compaq CRT.) Some people have said that text does not show up right or something to that effect. My best guess is that they do not have either the monitor or their computer's display settings set to the native resolution of 1024 x 768, because the text on mine is clearer than I would have ever hoped for, and causes less eye strain than on just about any CRT in my experience. There is also software included to help get the color settings just right. You do need to have it adjusted to the proper angle in order to have uniform brightness from the top to the bottom of the screen, but I don't see why this should be a problem. Unless you are getting a monitor to watch DVD's on from your couch, you probably do not need a bigger LCD than this. I would even say that any bigger might be too much, unless you are planning on mounting it on a wall or something. Keep in mind that the 15 inches is the actual (diagonal) size of the viewing area, whereas when sizes are used to describe CRT's, the viewing area is less than the stated size...don't ask me why; that's just the way it is. So, if you want to know how big the screen is, get out a tape measurer and measure out 15". That is the distance from the top-left corner of the display area to the bottom-right. That is just the display area - NOT the whole monitor, which is actually slightly bigger. It's probably bigger than you would have thought. It even comes with a 3 year warranty on parts and labor. Some other companies' warranties, such as NEC's (according to some of the reviews I have read), allow for so many "dead pixels". To the best of my knowledge, Samsung has no such "gotcha" policy. All in all, I would say this is a great buy if you are in the market for a new monitor and want to jump into the twenty-first century. CRT's are still cheaper though, so it really depends on how much you want to spend.

I can't say enough about this monitor. I has to be the BEST 15" LCD monitor there is out. The display is so impressive. So smooth and clear. Connecting it to the computer was super easy. True plug and play with WinME. I bought this after having a HUGE box of a monitor that was difficult to adjust the angle on and trying to get rid of the glare. I bought this to save space on my desk and also, I'm moving into a dorm this month, so I wanted as much free space I could have. This will definitely give me enough space in my dorm room. Just... THE BEST!!!

Incredible bargain for a 15" LCD,

I spent about two months reading reviews of LCDs and decided that if I restricted myself to under $400, this was the monitor to get. It has gotten the highest reviews of all "budget" LCDs at many hardware review sites. After seeing the great low price Amazon had, I was convinced to buy it.Out of the box, this monitor did not work for me. This is because I was a bit hasty in setting it up, though. Make sure you set your video card's output rate to 75hz or less before you unplug your current monitor, otherwise it won't display anything. Once I did that, I had no problems. I have not tried to run anything outside of the native resolution of 1024x768, and usually that isn't a good idea anyway. The picture is great at that resolution and I am very happy with the amount of space this monitor has saved on my desk. Anyone who is looking for a good 15" LCD, you have reached the end of your search.

The 151s is a fantastic flat panel monitor for the price. Of all the 15" monitors I looked at, this one had by far the best picture quality and has some of the highest ratings (from CNet, etc.). What was really surprising is that the 151s was still one of the cheapest 15" monitors I could find.Out of the box it may need a little tuning to make sure that text doesn't come out blurry; I had to try a few different settings to get it right. I also have the monitor hooked up to a ViewSonic ViewBox so that I can watch TV. The settings I have for working on my computer are a little less than ideal for the TV image; some TV images are a little dark. However, even then the 151s produces a sharp TV picture. Overall, a great 15" monitor if space is a premium.

Purchased this monitor last year. Noticed that it is not as crystal clear as a CRT, but this is true of all LCD screens. For the price, this model kicks. Check out reviews on computer sites also.

If you find the text a bit blurry all you need todo is hit the auto button and all will be well. It usually is the refresh rate, which in my case needed to be 60Hz. No Problems what-so-ever! And no dead pixels! The graphics look fantastic. An excellent monitor. ...

A great value. I plan on using this monitor in my motorhome. To my surprise and happiness, the included stand mounts to the back of the monitor with the 75mm VESA standard, so as soon as I can find the correct VESA "arm", I can mount it to the ceiling and/or wall of the RV.The picture is everything that everyone said it would be. The picture completely fills the frame. You don't miss anything, and there are no rotation-type geometry problems that I can discern. The auto function seems to zero in on the proper frequency. |
