Versatile 16-50mm Focal Length for Extended Range

This professional zoom lens offers a versatile range from 16mm to 50mm, making it ideal for a variety of shoots from standard portraits to wide-angle landscapes.

Optical Image Stabilization for Enhanced Image Quality

The Samsung 16-50mm Premium S Lens features built-in optical image stabilization (OIS), which automatically makes tiny lens shifts that cancel out shaky hands. The lens combines three aspherical (ASP) lenses, two extra-low dispersion (ED) lenses, and two eXreme High Refractive (XHR) lenses. Superior multi-coating technology reduces ghosting and flare effects.

F2-2.8 Aperture for Shooting in Low Light

The Samsung 16-50mm Premium S Lens has a maximum aperture of F2-2.8 across the focal range, making it the brightest 3x zoom in its class. It retains high resolution at any aperture, which means you can shoot bright and clear low-lit images even at low settings.

Ultra-Precise Stepping Motor for Fast, Quiet Autofocus

Samsung's Ultra-Precise Stepping Motor (UPSM) gives you extremely accurate incremental positioning for more precise control and focus on your subject. The UPSM eliminates the noise often generated by conventional autofocus systems and is three times faster than traditional motors.

Inner Focus System for Steady Video Recording

Unlike traditional lenses, the lens's inner focus system does not change the lens length when focusing, ensuring greater stability when recording video.

Designed to Withstand Extreme Conditions

With a tough metal exterior to protect it from the elements, this dust-proof and water-resistant lens is designed to be extremely durable, so you can take it with you from the ocean to the desert.

One-Touch Access to Controls with i-Function

Samsung's i-Function feature gives you easy one-touch access to your camera's manual settings. You'll be able to adjust aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and more with just a push of a button and twist of the lens. You'll even be able to preview the settings in real time, so you can see how the settings affect your shot before you take it. Whether you're an expert or enthusiast, the intuitive i-Function feature will give you professional results.

I have been shooting for Associated Press and Getty images for the past 10 years out of NYC.

The Samsung NX300, NX 30, and even the NX Mini are super cameras, great in many different scenarios, but they have been lacking that one, great, sharp, weather-sealed, pro-quality zoom that is the bread and butter for all pros, no matter what field you work in.

I can now say that the wait is over.

The 16-50mm Premium S Lens is a super lens in many different ways.

First, it has a constant F2.8, but it goes even better than that. On the wide end, it is an F2,0, so you can get those wide, low-light atmosphere shots that the client always needs. Oh, and it is image stabilized to an incredible 4 stops, so you can shoot those atmosphere shots at 400iso, not 3200iso.

Second, this is a quality piece. All the pro mid-range zooms from the major manufacturers are very well-built, as this is the lens that journalists, wedding pros, portrait photographers, fashion photographers, etc. all have in common. You need a fast, sharp zoom like this which stays on your body all the time. It has to be ready to go when you are, and must be up to the task--well, this Samsung (totally designed in-house...they even make their own glass) is a huge step up in terms of build quality. It feels very solid in your hand, no rattling or poor fit--this thing is well-made. The zoom is perfectly damped, maybe even slightly stiff if you are used to a lens like that--but it cuts down on lens creep. The manual focusing is a joy to use if need be, and the i-Function is intuitive and makes changing settings quick and easy, rather than having to go into the menu. You can keep your hand on the lens and keep on shooting.

The results are what really impresses.

For what it is (specs, size, price) the lens is a milestone. One has to be reasonable, do not expect the sharpness of the best Olympus Zuiko F2.0 zooms or MTF primes Olympus 75mm F1.8 and Panasonic 42.5mm F1.2 lenses out of it. Wide open it does provide a good background with separation with good to very good sharpness.

Tested on the NX-30 with the latest firmware in M-mode. In many cases after going out of sleep mode (single shot mode) the lens refuses to focus. Had to turn the camera off-on to make it operational.

Not sure, if it's software or hardware issues - my copy of the NX-30 had some unexplained lockups (see my review.

Not a real con: Feels a bit plasticky and slippery. It may be subjective but plastic Sigma lenses with matte finish appeared to be more solidly built.

I hope the above ussue was a fluke and won't happen on the new non-Android NX-1 body.
