Samsung SCX 4300 Multifunction laser printer( B/W )

I bought this printer because I am a fan of laser printers and needed one for home (and school) use. It is a nice size and fits neatly on my desk.

However, I'm giving this product 3 stars for the following reasons:
1.) The exit for printed paper is poorly planned. There is a flimsy piece of plastic you can fold out for larger print jobs, but I'm waiting for the day it snaps off.

2.) Paper jam messages pop up frequently... often with no paper actually being jammed anywhere.

3.) The machine is so picky. If you don't have that front door closed just right, it won't print. The same goes for filling up that tray with paper.

4.) I just put in a new toner cartridge, and I had one heck of a time getting the printer to work. First it printed half-black pages. Then nothing printed on the pages at all. After rebooting the printer and computer a few times and pulling the toner in and out of the machine a handful of times too, I FINALLY got it to work.

5.) The toner cartridge is expensive, although I think it is coming down in price. Two months ago, I couldn't find one on the internet for less than $80. Now Amazon has them for $68 (or less at other vendors).

Overall, I don't 100% trust the printer. I would like to get 5 years out of it to get my money's worth, but I don't even know if it will last another year... and a paper jam error filled one at that.

Overall a great starter multi function laser printer. I needed something that could do the occasional scan and print, and not be too expensive.

+ installation was painless - Snow Leopard recognised the printer, and you could print and scan straight away without inserting the disc
+ high quality scanning - the 300dpi is good for what I need, but can go all the way up to 4800dpi
+ nice colour and not too big, looks good in my place

- starter cartridge is good for only 1,000 pages, and toner cartridges are fully 1/2 the price of the whole printer.

After 10 years of reliable use from my old Mac printer, I replaced it with the SCX 4300 from Amazon based on the reviews and features. After one year and one month (just out of warranty) this all-in-one printer failed. I have since learned that this is very common. I would never recommend the 4300 and would be very cautious before considering a newer Samsung.
The two major problems:
1. The scanner will loose it's ability to reset a starting point when the power is turned on or off, resulting in "Scanner Error or Scanner Locked" messages. Since this is part of the start up routine, printing is also disabled in most cases.
2. There is a major fault in the toner sensing hardware and software. When a new toner cartridge is installed, the machine will not reset and believes that the toner is still empty.
Search Samsung SCX errors for confirmations. I would stay clear of these Samsung products.

I don't print much but this printer is great. The quality is top notch. I am just now running out of toner, 3 yrs after purchase. The scanner is the main reason I bought this item and it has never let me down. I use it to deposit checks and that can be tricky.

I went back and checked, and realized I purchased this item over two years ago (October 2009). This printer has handled printing out several copies of books, numerous short story submissions, and a variety of other text-intensive works. We've never had any problems with it, and it sits on top of our filing cabinet and hasn't once had a problem. Normally it's in low-power mode, and I forget it's even on. Printing can be a bit noisy, but you get used to that when you've got loud gaming machines in the same room. We're about to order our third ink cartridge for our device since we've owned it. Like most printers, I wouldn't recommend purchasing an off-brand toner replacement, unless you're willing to have smudging ink on your papers.

For me, I need professional copies for potential publications and draft review. Having a copy machine and scanner is handy too for class preparation or for keeping track of receipts. This little baby hasn't once given up on me even though I've thrown a huge workload at it. Now where's some wood I can knock on?

Every new printer includes the printer cable. But this product does not even there is the picture on the package shown USB Cable included. Seller even does not know what the package includes. I felt like purchasing used one. Seller's attitude is really rude, too.

Darkest setting looks like a weak draft, with one side of the paper almost blank. Manual paper feeder gauranteed to wrinkle the paper and not print straight.

Works great. Very happy with it. My first laser printer after years of inkjets that would either dry out or require color ink when just doing black and white printing.

For a home use black and white printer, this is perfect. Very easy setup, including finding the 64 Bit download from Samsung's website. Had to give up my Canon ImageClass because Canon (even though the printer is less than 2 years old and Canon has made many other models compatable) informed me that they have no intention of making my model 64 Bit compatable so I can use it with my new laptop. Canon's answer to my dilemma was for me to ship them my ImageClass and they would give me $50 off a new printer -- what a joke. So much for Canon.
