The 730B is very bright and responsive, no doubts about that. There is essentially no difference between a CRT monitor and this screen when it comes to speed. Colors are vivid and the screen can be set to be very bright; black is deep and not washed out.

My unit has a rather noticeable vertical gradient (colors are a bit washed out at the bottom, and a bit darker a the top of the screen). The top and bottom edges of the screen also show "arcs" of backlight, which are annoying when watching widescreen movies (the black bands at the top and bottom of the frame are not completely black).

The viewing angle is acceptable horizontally (a yellow cast is detectable when off-center) and vertically (a darkening is detectable when off-center); viewing does extend to the claimed 160 degrees, but at the expense of image quality.

Unlike what Samsung says on its website, this model does not come with a DVI cable in the box (at least in the USA), only with a VGA cable.

Recommended as a "value" screen, but only when backed by a substantial price rebate.

This monitor is yet another example of Samsung quality.

It has plenty of brightness, good pixel pitch and a quick 8ms response time. The "auto configure" mode for color and brightness work very well.

This monitor has an excellent viewing angle, and little distortion. Some other reviewers complained of gradiation of pixel color - this is a factory defect and they should have their monitor replaced! Since the monitor comes with a 3 year warranty from Samsung, this is no problem at all.

It is pleasing to look at; a thin bezel and hidden buttons add to the pannel's thinness. The monitor is non-glare, which makes life much easier for your eyes. It is a bit on the expensive side compared to "budget" LCD monitors, but you get what you pay for.

I just got the LCD monitor I wanted. Screen is very crisp, crystal clear, response is very fast: a DVD runs smoothly; I am not a game mania, so I can't tell how fast the monitor is responding under gaming circumstances. the monitor seems to satisfy all the requirements I want. Before I got the monitor, I did research on several internet on-line sellers and their reviews. It was quite difficult which monitor is good for me. Differnt people says differently about a monitor. However, in common, they say, all LCD monitors are much better with DVI connection to PC, if the monitor has the DVI option. Unfortunately my computer does not have a DVI input; it means that it does not have a graphic card. First, before I purchased the monitor, I got PowerColor Radeon 9250 DDR graphic card. And then I tested the graphic card with my old CRT, there seems to be a little bit enhancement of image quality. And then, I got the Syncmaster 730b; the result seems to be a perfect match. The monitor automatically goes into Digital mode and comes up with very clear image under maximum resolution (1280+1024 pixels).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great monitor, June 29, 2005
This review is from: Samsung 730B Syncmaster 17" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
I use this monitor at home. Brightness, contrast, picture quality, etc. are very good. I use the monitor with linux. The MagicTune software does not run on linux; the OSD-based controls work fine, but the switches are in the bottom of the monitor and their labels are hard to see in the dark. Another (minor) issue is that the height is not adjustable, and the monitor does not rotate left-to-right.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Am Impressed!, June 20, 2005

As this is my first LCD Monitor I really wasn't sure what to expect in terms of quality of text and images. I have replaced my Viewsonic CRT with the 730B and after using it for only a week so far I find the images and text very sharp and easy to see. The auto adjustment features works well and there are several user options that can fine tune the picture. The ability to use either analog or digital conections is a plus as I plan to upgrade my Graphics card down the road.

Overall, I would have to say that I am pleased with Samsung products and this is no exception. There were no dead pixels and getting the monitor up and going took only a matter of minutes. With so many LCD's on the market it was really difficult for me to make a decision on what to buy. I feel as a good general purpose monitor, the Samsung 730B is a very good choice and is backed with a very good waranty, something that other brands don't offer.

There is limited adjustments as you can only tilt the screen but this wasn't an issue for me, it may be for some. With the rebates and tax included this monitor costs me $270.00 which I feel is really good for the features that are included. The bottom line was to go to Circuit City and see this in person, that is what I did and I am happy with my purchase.

2nd 730b for dual display, set up digital this time. Analog and digital hard to distinguish every day use, digital terrific with high power graphics card like ATI 1900 Radeon. Make sure you get the right digtital DVI cable (single link) since its not included. Best Buy $20,Dynex DX-DVI2M 6.6 feet, Amazon/Startech.com 6-10-15+ feet. Controls under panel,731 moves to front. East set up analog or digital, disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice. Do not be afraid, December 26, 2006

I bought this monitor and had many troubles. The only signal recognized was analog. In analog mode the monitor has a very poor performance. My old CRT had better quality definition. I was using an Nvidia Geforce 5200 AGP, and was imposible to run the monitor in digital mode.

I just bought an Nvidia Geforce 7600 AGP and it was! The digital mode was running instantly and the monitor is great. The image is vivid. I am very impressed. So I think that if you have an old VGA you have to upgrade it. Then you will have a perfect and magnificent digital signal. Great product, low price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality and Easy Setup, January 14, 2006
This review is from: Samsung 730B Syncmaster 17" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
I bought this LCD display for $299 with $50 rebates. Final price $249. Best purchase I've ever made. This thing is so easy to set up an 8 year could do it. Picture quality is perfect. I loved it so much I purchased a second one on ebay ($211) for my other computer. You can not go wrong on this display. Only negative comment I've seen is no DVI cable. Be careful that your computer has a DVI output before you purchase a cable. The analog conection is great.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good, economical monitor...while it lasts!, March 29, 2008
This review is from: Samsung 730B Syncmaster 17" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
I bought this monitor on sale from a major B&M electronics chain back in 2005. It was my first LCD monitor, replacing an old CRT that had burned out after six years of heavy use. I knew pretty much what to expect before buying the LCD. And with the brand Samsung, I knew I wouldn't be paying as much for something of comparable quality.

Rather than go through all the technobabble, I'll say the monitor was easy on the eyes, good for just everything, from word processing, to surfing the Internet, to playing games, to viewing video or graphics. Everything looked rather crisp and more detailed, sometimes to the point where you end up seeing more faults (e.g., in pictures) where none was noticeable on the old CRT monitor. The native resolution of 1280x1024 is a bit outdated by today's standards, but still handy for general use. I never really found any lagging in response time when it came to gaming.

It also has a rather finicky viewing angle. You have to have it placed (or have yourself positioned) at just the right spot or else it looks like it has too much brightness or contrast. It is very lightweight and adjustable, giving you back valuable desktop space that the CRT took away.

Now the bad thing. My 730B didn't last as long as I thought it would -- just under 2.5 years. It died suddenly about a month ago without any notice. I had expected to see maybe some flickering or a dimmer picture (as some kind of warning) to tell me the monitor was about to go kaput. Instead, one day I turn it on, and was greeted with a blank screen. The service prices to get this fixed (replacing the bulb) seems way too high to justify it; you're better off using that towards a new monitor.

I suppose my particular Samsung falls under the "YMMV" category, since others have had better success than I did with it (and the ones I always see in the stores seem to display non-stop without ever breaking down!). I'd still recommend Samsung for the price and performance, if nothing else.
