Fast F1.4 85mm Lens for Great Portraits

The 85mm (equivalent to 130.9mm in 35mm format) focal length is ideal for flattering portrait shots. With an incredibly fast F1.4 maximum aperture, the lens gives you great control over depth of field, letting you separate subjects from backgrounds for dramatic portraits. The fast lens also gathers a ton of light, so you can work in low-light settings. The lens has nine rounded aperture blades that provide a smooth, natural quality to the out-of-focus regions of the image.

This lens deserves 5 stars on amazing picture quality. Optics are precise. Color and Bokeh are excellent! I have had this lens for about three month and I think it is my favorite lens.

This is my favorite lens for any camera I've ever owned. The depth of field is simply amazing and it takes excellent photos even in very poor light. With the combination of long focal length (130mm film equivalent) and wide aperture (f/1.4), it can create some absolutely stunning portraits. It's the second most expensive lens currently for the Samsung NX mount, but for the quality and features it's an absolute bargain.

This lens is HUGE. With the hood, it's actually larger than my 50-200mm zoom lens (including hood). Heavier, too, at a whopping 1-1/2 pounds! It dwarfs the camera it is attached to. But this weight and size makes it feel and look very professional.

The lens has a manual focus override, but it only works if you keep the shutter button partially depressed. If you let go, the next time you press the button it will auto focus again. If you find you need to manually adjust the focus, it's easier just the flip the switch on the lens to full-time manual focus.

Because the depth of field is so tight, it can be a difficult lens for the novice. At maximum aperture and minimum focus distance of 82cm (about 32 inches), DOF is a mere 4.7mm (0.185 inches)! You're going to become really good friends with Aperture Priority mode; it's the easiest way to control the depth of field and still leave most of the automation in place.

This would be the fifth lens I'd recommend for any NX user, after one of the mid-range zooms, the 50-200mm telephoto, the 12-24mm wide and the 30mm normal prime.

It's big. It's heavy. It takes amazing portraits. Bokeh is fantastic. Very sharp and nice manual focus adjustment. Seems expensive but cheap when compared to any of its competitors.

Pro: Wicked sharp. Just a little smaller than competing 85mm f1.4. Seems well built. Excellent value.
Cons: unbalanced with tiny NX camera. Lacking Image Stability feature.

This category of lens has just a singular purpose: Portraiture. Beware that f1.4 means razor thin DOF and it is easily blurred and/or out-of-focus so I would say it is a difficult lens to use as the quality of the shot has a lot to do with your technique (but this is a common issue accross all 85/1.4 lenses) If you shoot all the time at f4 or up, there is no need to buy this type of lens, it just cost more with no real payback.

As for the lens: it does an outstanding job at pulling attention to your subject and leave all other OOF creamy smooth. It's already sharp at 1.4 but totally awsome at f2.8 - 4. Focus is quiet and fast. Depending on the camera, locking in focus on the NX300 is blazing fast.

The downside is a lack of Image stability. For this type of lens: high quality telephoto glass, I would have expected IS to be given, but it is not. It means i get more blurs with candid shots at low light where f1.4 is needed the most. So, knock a star off.

Amazing! Buy it. Does what you want. Portrait master. I like it better than my canon 1.2. Granted because it's in my nx1...
