Product Description

Chromebooks run Web-based apps, not traditional PC applications

Chromebooks are designed to be connected to the Internet. You can create documents and spreadsheets or edit photos on a Chromebook using Google apps designed for these purposes. The Chrome operating system will not load and run traditional PC software like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. However, files created in these applications can be viewed and edited using Google apps on your Chromebook or cloud-based applications like Microsoft's Office web apps.

Store your files in the Cloud, not on the machine.

To help make them thin and light, Chromebooks are built without large-capacity drives. So instead of storing your documents, videos, and photos on your computer, you save them to Google Drive (Google's Cloud-based storage service). Your files are password-protected and secure, and you can access them anywhere there's an Internet connection. If you know you'll want access to a file or photo offline, however, you can easily save it to the built-in solid-state drive.

Enjoy fast performance and easy maintenance with the Samsung Chromebook 2. This slim, lightweight laptop features a 13.3-inch Full HD display, a powerful Exynos 5 Octa processor, an elegant leather-like stitched design, and up to 8.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. Image optimization and noise reduction* improve video chatting, while security features like automatic updates and sandboxing technology protect your Chromebook 2 from viruses and malware. This laptop comes with AirDroid Premium, Wunderlist Pro, and Little Bridge software.

The keyboard, trackpad, and speakers are very acceptable quality.

I'd read some negative things about the 1080p screen but from what I can see, it looks fine, with a good viewing angle.

It's fast, silent and runs cool. And I usually have about 25 tabs open. The keyboard is maybe not quite as nice as my $1500 Lenovo laptop, but it's excellent. A cold boot (8 seconds) plus login, plus start the chrome browser, plus open my mail in gmail takes 30 seconds.

Most of the time I just close it when not in use and when I open it, it wakes instantly.

There's a 2-star review that claims the Samsung Cbook-2 (13 inch) can't play Comedy Central's Net Neutrality video -- "The video would freeze every few seconds." But it's easy for extraneous things to distort such a test. I ran the same video off the same website full screen without the slightest hiccup even on the first time through.

I've never been comfortable with a touchpad, but this one is working well for me. Forget the "stickyness" worry, the surface is perfect. But here's a trick for drag and drop that's often quicker and easier:
Settings / Show Advanced Settings / Accessibility / Enable tap dragging. To use it: double tap and drag. Otherwise use two hands: click down the track pad with a finger on one hand and drag with the other. (more tips at the end)

If you're thinking of buying this Chromebook, you may be hoping to get some real work done on it. It's the first one besides the $1600 Chromebook Pixel that seems like it might compete with a top-of-the-line laptop. That was my hope, and so far I've not been disappointed. The screen could be a tad bigger, but the high resolution is definitely not wasted. The memory is a bit small (yes you can save files directly to the local hard drive, so you might want quite a bit more). But you can expand it by 32GB for about $15 or apparently by 64GB.

Today I received the Samsung Chromebook 2 via UPS, packaging was a little weird, but this review is about the product and not Amazon.

I do want to make a note that the seal on the box was broken, and I am hoping that it was by Amazon to verify the delivery from Samsung. The Samsung box did have a shipping label from Samsung to Amazon.

The packaging did not affect my rating.

Now, on with the review.

This thing is a joy to type on. The keys are well spaced, have a decent spring to them and do not wobble at all. They are not back-lit, which I knew going into it, but it would have been a very welcome addition.

There are four rubber feet on the bottom, and they prevent it from sliding at all. I know this is an odd observation, but I've used laptops before that slid easily on a desk and so this was something I was looking for.

The touchpad (mouse) works pretty well, but there is a little bit of "stickyness" to your finger since it appears to be made of a plastic of some sort. I feel that one that was smoother and glass-like would have been a slightly better experience. Because of this, I expect that I'll want to use a mouse the majority of the time. There is a little lip around the touchpad so you can feel if you're going off of the touchpad without looking right at it. It is responsive though, and for that, I'm actually ok with the plastic--like feel as long as I can get used to the way it feels.

The speakers are quite low end, and do not offer any bass at all. To be honest, I think my iPhone sounds quite a bit better, and it has only one speaker in it. The headphone port is on the right side, and when used sounds perfectly fine offering bass, treble and mids as you'd expect.

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung Chromebook 2.

We have identified some issues with the sticker seals used on our initial shipment of Chromebook 2.  Be assured that we have resolved this issue and we apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.

This is my fourth Chromebook. I've had two Acer's (C720 and C720P) which I passed on to family members. I also had the very drool-worthy Pixel, which I sold on eBay because of its crappy battery life (and I was able to sell it for more than I paid for it!). This is my first Samsung and I am quite pleased with it. I'll start with the few things I don't like.

The screen could be better. The vertical viewing angles are pretty poor - you have to adjust the screen just right to get full brightness. Horizontal angles are not as bad. I would gladly pay another $50 to get a higher quality IPS panel. I do love the full HD resolution, and I'm glad that it's not scaled as it is on the Pixel. The processor is also a little anemic and I do see a little hesitation when working with more complex web sites. To be honest, I saw similar things on the Pixel. I think this has as much to do with Chrome OS as it does the hardware. Lastly, I'm not a big fan of the faux leather stitched lid design. Thankfully, it's pretty subtle. The texture is good, but I would have preferred that Samsung leave off the stitching.

Despite those gripes, this is still the best Chromebook I have ever used. The keyboard is fantastic. I am a software developer and spend all day typing and I love working on this machine. The track-pad is every bit as good as the keyboard. Battery life is also excellent. I have gotten a solid 7 hours of movie watching and 8 hours of typical web work out of it. It also charges back up very quickly. I also want to mention the full HD resolution again. This is huge for me. Working with web-based IDEs on the 1366x768 resolution of most Chromebooks was no fun. The resolution was my main reason for purchasing this, and I really hope other Chromebook vendors start looking at offering better, higher resolution screens. I believe there is a market for a $500 Chromebook that gets everything right. This Samsung is very, very close.
