5.0 out of 5 stars Daewood Multi Region DVD Player
After reading some of the customer feedback here, I was a little nervous about giving this DVD player to my English husband, who loves to watch lots of old Britcoms. I've been wanting to secure these shows for him on DVD, despite their limited availablility and the fact we live in the U.S. and had DVD code issues.
Well, I got this player for him for Christmas and it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Worked fine for a year, then nothing
So this DVD worked fine for about a year, then nothing. A little light on the front, but despite turning it off and on, leaving it unplugged, etc., it never worked again. When it did work, it did play Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs just fine. Those were the only region DVDs I had. So I guess this is an ok unit if you can find it cheap and expect to dispose of it after a...

5.0 out of 5 stars Daewood Multi Region DVD Player, December 27, 2004
This review is from: Samsung DVD-HD850 Up-Converting Region Code Free High Quality DVD Player (Electronics)
After reading some of the customer feedback here, I was a little nervous about giving this DVD player to my English husband, who loves to watch lots of old Britcoms. I've been wanting to secure these shows for him on DVD, despite their limited availablility and the fact we live in the U.S. and had DVD code issues.
Well, I got this player for him for Christmas and it works beautifully. I had ordered several British DVDs from the Amazon.co.uk website for him and we just popped them in this player and watched 'em - no problems whatsoever. Great picture too.
So, long story short, this unit comes highly recommended from a Yank and a Brit!
FOLLOW-UP NOTE: Unit jammed after just four months of use...never again!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD BUY BUT READ THIS FIRST !!!!, October 8, 2005

Searching for a DVD player that would play both PAL and NTSC disc's, I was amazed to find this one for less than twenty bucks. The unit arrived fast and actually worked for a few minutes. Then the machine stopped dead. I sent it back and had to absorb the extra $30 in return postage. However, the seller was fast and efficient in replacing it. It could easily have been a shipping issue.

However, when the new one arrived, I leaped at the chance to play a PAL (UK) DVD. Well, the screen just said 'Wrong Region'. Upon reading the manual, I discovered this machine is actually built and sold as a REGION 1 (USA) player only! It clearly states that it will NOT play anything other than REGION 1 USA discs!!!!

BUT READ ON...

I sent a snappy letter back to seller, asking why it was sold as an 'all region' player. I was sent a code to punch into the remote control and PRESTO! Perfect machine plays all regions!

This code will work for yours too, though I do not know why seller didn't send this out first. However, you simply cannot buy a better DVD machine for less than the cost of the disc it is playing!!!

Here's the code you need:

OPEN THE DISC TRAY

Press 1 - 3 - 7 - 9 - 0

CLOSE TRAY

It should be fine.

Now it seems that every brand has a really short life before you have to buy another...

The region free worked great in Japan for region 1 and 2 dvds the first year. In a little over a year of infrequent use the door started to jam then the dvds began to freeze, have disc errors, skip or not play at all. So, now, I need a new one, but it wont be this one again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware! MUST BE HACKED!, September 24, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung DVD-HD850 Up-Converting Region Code Free High Quality DVD Player (Electronics)
We first recieved this player with the great hopes of watching some of our favorite britcoms only to discover that the player said "Wrong Region" when you tried to play the DVD. After some Googling, I found out how to "hack" the DVD player (Open the tray, enter 1-3-7-9-0) and shazam! It's a wonderful purchase for anyone wanting to play any DVD from anywhere in the world due to the easy region hack and the excellent fact that it also has PAL to NTSC conversion (technical stuff that I won't get into). A solid purchase but would have been better if they told you about the hack that's why 4 out of 5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars JWIN - multi region dvd player, September 7, 2004
This review is from: Samsung DVD-HD850 Up-Converting Region Code Free High Quality DVD Player (Electronics)
Ok, I don't think I did ask for too much: at the very least a region 4 player (Yes I do have Australian - pal DVD's). and yes I am in the US of A land of NTSC Telly... so can you watch a multi-region dvd in your lounge? the answer is NO... it just does not work.

That is all there is to say... so try something else instead.
