Amazon.com

Samsung's titanium-finished and remarkably affordable DVD-P231 features high-end component-video outputs, built-in MP3 and WMA decoding for home-brewed CD compilations, and even compatibility with JPEG image CDs and Kodak Picture CDs. Now you can enjoy a slideshow of digital pictures right there on the television.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-P231 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

The DVD-P231 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Another handy feature is EZ View letterbox eliminator, which lets you enjoy full-screen pictures on 4:3 aspect-ratio TVs--even when watching widescreen DVDs.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Product Description

Samsung DVD-P231 Progressive Scan DVD Player combines the video fidelity of Samsung's new 3:2 pull down progressive scan circuitry with essential DVD features to create a specialized solution for DVD. The component video outputs can be set to the NTSC standard 480i mode for connection to analog televisions, or the  progressive scan 480P mode for use with the latest Digital Television displays that offer these superior connections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic, robust little unit., September 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung DVD-P231 Progressive-Scan DVD Player , Titanium (Electronics)
This is a simple, robust unit. I've rented tons of dvds; it plays them all fine, even the ones with surface marks. There are no real bells and whistles. It shows you jpegs, and plays mp3s. It will not play mpegs, or any of the computer-movie formats, which would be a very nice features to have. I have it connected using the simple yellow-white-red cable, so I can't comment on the fancy new types of connections it offers. If you're looking for a reliable, basic little dvd player that is easy to use, this is a good one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-of-the-line player, reasonably priced, July 1, 2003

This review is from: Samsung DVD-P231 Progressive-Scan DVD Player , Titanium (Electronics)
Got this about a week ago and am quite impressed. The picture and sound quality are excellent, menus and setup are easy to use (I bought an open-box model, missing only the manual, and have had zero problems), and this puppy does just about anything you ask of it.

In addition to progressive scan, this will play not only MP3s but also Windows Media files from CDs. There's also an Easy View feature that will let you watch the film in pan-and-scan if you so desire (GASP! heretics!!)

And not only does the DVD-P231 work quite nicely, the titanium finish is far more attractive than many of the generic-looking black boxes out there. I don't recommend buying a DVD player solely on the basis that it matches your TV, but in this case it's just the icing on the cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, reliable DVD player, November 30, 2003
By A Customer
I went through two DVD players (Panasonic and RCA) that were very bad about playing a disc with even the hint of a scratch. I am very pleased to report that this player is fine even with some pretty bad scratches (hey, I have kids, what can I say). This is a good, solid player with few bells and whistles that most people never use anyway. Just ignore the nerdy folks giving low ratings because it doesn't do everything imaginable.
