Video features
Topping this amazing player's features is its ability to perform true 3:2 pulldown through its component-video outputs, a videophile feature.
What is 3:2 pulldown? Some context: while movie film runs at 24 frames per second (fps), NTSC television signals run at 30 fps, requiring film's 24 frames to be adapted to 30 frames before you can watch movies on standard (U.S.) television. The solution developed by the video industry exploits the fact that the NTSC format uses two "fields" per frame of video.
During the film-to-tape transfer, the telecine engineer mixes alternating sets of three and two video fields. The first frame of a second's worth of film is placed on three fields of video; the next frame is placed on two fields; and so on, until all 60 fields of a single frame of a 30 fps signal are complete--resulting in a gentle "stretching" of the original 24 frames.
While difficult to detect, this stretching is technically a distortion, and 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects the distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture on your component-video-equipped direct-view or projection TV or monitor.
The progressive-scan feature displays all 480 video lines in one pass to provide high vertical resolution and flicker-free, high-density images. A feature called Screen Fit lets you inform the player of the appropriate aspect ratio of your TV or monitor (whether standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9).
The unit also offers standard component outputs and S-video outputs, and a 10-bit video digital-to-analog converter ensures precision playback of high-resolution DVD signals.
Audio Features
In the audio realm, the DVD-P421's phantom surround circuit simulates surround sound through your TV or stereo speakers, while its 96 kHz/24-bit audio converters deliver pristine audio quality from DVDs and CDs. The back-panel Toslink optical and RCA coaxial terminals each pass a 96 kHz/24-bit audio stream for use with the latest high-end audio recordings (though be aware that your receiver must be able to decode your 96 kHz recordings if you use a digital connection there; otherwise, listen through the unit's stereo analog outputs).
The player's .25-inch stereo headphone output offers a convenient rotary volume control for optimal listening in private, and a 2x audio playback feature delivers clear, double-time sound for accurate audio cueing of your favorite scenes.
Connections
The DVD-P421 includes three sets of left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with stereo Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. This unit also supports both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel formats through its digital-audio outputs (one each of coaxial and optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
The back panel offers one output each for composite-video, S-video, and top-of-the-line component-video.
Other Features
The player's advanced navigation system offers additional flexibility in accessing DVD content, while motion zoom grants high magnification of selected screen areas without distortion and during real-time playback. Chapter digest generates thumbnail representative scene images, simplifying scene selection, and the included universal remote control (with one-touch joystick) operates the DVD-P421 as well as most TVs and VCRs.
Supplied accessories include a composite-video AV cable, instruction manual, remote control, and four AA batteries.

Good price for features, half-decent performance...,

This review is from: Samsung DVD-P421 Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
This DVD player has most of the features you would find in a $200+ player at a much lower cost. However, it doesn't take long to figure out why this player is so affordable. I, like other reviewers, experienced the "skipping" problems of this player. Audio CD's and MP3 CD's are handled well by this player. The problem exists with DVD movies, as this player sometimes randomly skips scenes while viewing the movie, and will also skip entire chapters when slowly searching through the movie. As I mentioned, this only occurs seldomly, but is still annoying when watching DVD movies. I wouldn't recommend this player to anyone unless there were no better options available at this price with this set of features.

Excellent value, while it lasted,
This review is from: Samsung DVD-P421 Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
I figured the Samsung DVD-P421 would be a good choice making the best of my current and future equipment. It matched up feature for feature with players costing much more. It loaded DVDs fairly quickly, gave flawless video output, and put out excellent sound to my RCA 29 inch TV. The larger remote was a bit hard to handle, especially in the dark. The little remote made up for that, with easy to use glow-in-the-dark keys for basic needs -- starting and stopping play, and navigating DVD menus. Overall I was quite pleased with this player... ....until it was into Week Four after delivery, when it simply refused to load any more discs of any type whatsoever. It would _try_ to load them, and then just give me the "no disc" indicator. For 24 days it had played new DVDs fresh out of the wrapper, along with bashed and abused Netflix DVDs, all without a hint of trouble. It just couldn't handle Day 25. So back it went ... with a few days to spare. Right now my little sixty buck no-feature Apex DVD player is looking really good in comparison to the DVD-P421, because it was playing my stuff months before I got the Samsung and it's still going strong. All the features and value in the world don't matter much if the player just won't play.

Sometimes works sometimes it doesn't,
This review is from: Samsung DVD-P421 Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
I've only had this player for two weeks and I've not decided yet whether I'm going to return it or not but if it keeps performing the way it has been, I'll probably return it. You can play the same DVD more than once and at first it'll be fine and then it skips whole scenes at a whim. I've not played too many CD's on it so I can't vouch for that. I ordered this player because I have a Samsung burner/DVD combo player in my Dell computer and it works great. I cannot believe my computer DVD player outperforms a standalone player. I believe you used to be able to buy high quality electronic merchandise but it seems these companies just keep churning out crap and we keep buying it. What a shame.
