Almost everything I wanted,

This review is from: Samsung DVD-VR345 Hi-Def Conversion DVD/VCR Combined Recorder (Electronics)
I have had this unit for about 3 months without any electrical problems. The reason I got this unit was to make backups of all of my old VHS tapes on to DVD, but it doen't let you copy any copyrighted material. I still can copy all of my personal recordings to DVD, which is nice, because now I can throw out all of those VHS tapes.I would say the nicest feature is the upconvert to HD. This is great because I fed my satellite dish receiver through it and it upconverts everything I watch. I still can't figure out how to reset the counter on the VCR, except for pulling the tape out and then putting it back in. I also wish the manual was a little more clear when it comes to multiple session recordings to a DVD. The list of DVD/VCR combos that upconvert and record to dual layer DVD's is very limited so I'm glad I found one that fits most of my needs. All in all I'm pretty happy with this DVD/VCR.

Worked great for 30 days - just long enough to not be exchanged, then the High Def output stopped working. The other features still work, but I bought it to be used with HDMI, and that output is totally dead. Will have to send to a service place for repair.

Samsung DVD/VCR recorder + Tivo = Happy Customer!,

I bought this unit so I could make space on my TIVO. I followed the instructions from Tivo and from the Samsung unit, which was pretty simple, and before I knew it, it was done. After hooking everything up replacing my VCR with this unit, I gave it a test run by transfering a couple of shows from my TIVO to a DVD. Voila! I had DVDs of my Tivo shows and more space to record on my Tivo too! Entering in chapter titles etc. could be easier but overall I'm very happy with everything.

Had this unit for about 8 months before I finally decided to throw it away. Reason? Exceedingly sensitive, or possibly misaligned, read head. It frequently pixelated, stopped, or simply would not play pre-recorded commercial DVDs, especially toward the end of the recording (where, I presume, we are on the inside of the disk, at the lowest linear speed). After arduous, often repeated, cleaning of the disk, sometimes I could get it to play. After replacing the unit with a simple DVD player, by Panasonic, this problem disappeared. This problem with the Samsung worsened over time, and was not due to any abuse of the unit. Nothing like this has happened to the Panasonic, so I have to presume that the manufacturing quality control of Samsung is simply not up to snuff. I am now hesitant to buy any of their video products.

I had trouble with this unit and Amazon didn't carry them anymore so I ordered the vr335 from Newegg. I like the ease of use once this is setup. The manual is written with enough detail to get through most issues, and they have mostly been learning issues.

DO NOT BUY, STAY AWAY,

I have 3 Samsung dvd recorders. The oldest was bought in September 2006. Then I bought one in October and November. ALL OF THEM ARE CRAP. After about 6 weeks they stop playing -dvd, then at about 2 months they give you problems with dvd-ram. About the only thing they will play is store bought dvd's.EVEN WORSE, SAMSUNGS HELP IS ZERO. When you call you will be put on hold for a half hour and then when you finally get someone, they have no idea what the problem is. On their website, I asked for help 10 days ago, THEY HAVE YET TO RESPOND. Do yourself a favor and go for Panasonic. At least I got 2 years out of their product before I started having problems.

The device works reasonably well once the instructions have been mastered.
