Good Design, Poor Performance,
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung DVD611 DVD Player (Electronics)
Samsung is known for manufacturing quality TVs at affordable prices. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have the same success with their DVD players.I brought this puppy home, attracted by both the low price and my satisfaction with my Samsung 27" TV. Although the player performed satisfactorily while playing Tarzan, on other DVD's it seemed to skip over sections of the DVD at precisely the same point. I tried different DVD's, and this problem was consistent. The video and audio qualities were otherwise very satisfactory. This unit also has a zoom feature, very unusual for a player in this bargain price range. The remote is well designed, but the key pads are small. But I can't see saving a few dollars and living with the skipping problem. Until Samsung addresses this issue, I suggest skipping their lineup and going with an equivalent model from Toshiba, Sony or Panasonic, the quality leaders. And Phillips has some very affordable models, and they seem to have licked some earlier Q/A problems. After returning the Samsung I settled on the Toshiba SD-2200, and am confident that was the right choice for me.

Don't Be Swayed By Bad Reviews,

Like a lot of people, I could not wait any longer to get my first DVD player... and being budget impaired... I was looking for a good player at a relatively low price. Before I buy, I always research, including reading the reviews for the Samsung DVD611 DVD Player. Seemed like split vote between those who praise the price and features to those who had VERY bad experinces with this machine and were justifibly warning consumers... That all said and done, I ordered the Samsung DVD611 DVD Player for myself, leery of problems, but lured by the low price...and hoped for the best... And I must say... this DVD far exceeded my expectations. So far, the skipping problem (which occur on most DVD players) has been minimal. The picture and sound quality and variety of options are more than I anticipated. The remote is small and easy to use... and it's just cool! So, say what you will about the Samsung DVD611 DVD Player. I for one and very happy with it and would purchase another as a gift. Find out for yourself. Then write your own review.

Sophisticated features at a rational price,
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung DVD611 DVD Player (Electronics)
I am very pleased with my Samsung DVD-611. I have previously owned the Samsung DVD-709 which performed admirably. I own CDV's from Asia. The Samsung products output the PAL encoded signal from these disks with a good quality NTSC signal. I had tried playing these disks on the Philips DVD players, but Philips DVD players always output a PAL signal when the input source is PAL which, will does not sync correctly or produce correct colors on the American NTSC televisions. The Samsung DVD-611 is future proofed with DTS outputs. The component outputs include coaxial and optical. The remote is sophisticated yet simple to operate. The mechanism on the Samsung DVD-611 operates quietly. The Samsung DVD-611 includes sophisticated features like 2X and 4X video zoom and multiple levels of fast and slow motion. There is no need to pay more for a high quality DVD player.

Frame skips make this player a miss,
By
This review is from: Samsung DVD611 DVD Player (Electronics)
I received a DVD611 recently as a birthday gift, but I'm returning it ... Every DVD that I've played in the machine has exhibited frame skips at least twice per movie. For me, this is annoying and disrupts the mood of a scene. I end up wondering where the skips will occur on each movie I play. The audio gain is also weak, at least through the analog RCA audio connectors (my TV doesn't support digital audio). I would recommend this machine only to uncritical neophytes for whom the low price is the primary purchase factor. They'll be impressed enough with the resolution and multiple connection options to disregard the skipping problem. However, if you think the machine's quirks would irritate you (as they did me), spend a little more money and move up to something else.

I really think this is a great little player!,

As a survivor of the Beta/VHS war, I waited as long as I could to take the dive into DVD. I really didn't have a lot of extra scratch and I am still jealous of my 1,000+ VHS titles, mostly studio editions. I figured that I had thirty days to let this baby prove itself and it did. The picture and sound are phenomenal on my 27" SONY with SONY Pro-Logic Surround Processor. Skipping has been almost non-existent, even after heavy use (yes, there have been one or two very slight 'freezes' on most discs but the sound stays on track so it's not a major inconvenience). Try this machine...I think you'll love it!

Nice basic unit for the bucks - and it IS DTS capable,
This review is from: Samsung DVD611 DVD Player (Electronics)
This is a no-frills player, but it does a nice job and offers lots of features - particularly DTS - at a very attractive price. Some reviewers have had problems with skipping, but I had this problem with only one movie, and it was a bad disc, not the player. The user interfaces could be better, and I wish they'd put more controls on the face of the unit instead of the remote (my four-year-old LOVES to hide daddy's DVD remote!), but overall I'd recommend this unit pretty highly. For the price, you can't go wrong...but for the same price you CAN go wrong with other units.

You get what you pay for,

I purchased this DVD player in June 2000. In August, it started skipping and freezing discs out of the blue. It also started acting very strangly on just about any disc that had extra features (which covers about 99% of all DVDs). I had it cleaned, and checked out by a local electronics store, but they could find no problem with it and suggested I return it or purchase a better one. I've noticed that it skips more often about an hour into watching a movie. The player is usually pretty hot at this point, even if placed in a well open space. If I turn it off for an hour or two, and let it cool off, the skipping would stop - until the next time it got too hot. This is just not acceptable.Samsung was my first DVD player, and I'm not happy with it at all anymore. I got it because of the low price, but I guess that old saying of "you get what you pay for" is true. Buyer beware on this one. I suggest spending a few extra bucks, and going with another brand. It'll save you the frustration of wanting to throw the thing out the window when it starts freezing and skipping in the middle of a movie you're enjoying very much.

Samsung has skipping problems,
By Stephen Nozaki (Loma Linda, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samsung DVD611 DVD Player (Electronics)
I got the Samsung DVD-709 as a gift and it seemed to play DVD's well until we rented "Mystery Alaska." There were several scenes where the player would skip and then freeze. We thought it might be the DVD, so we exchanged it for the same movie at Blockbuster and found the same problems. It would even skip in the exact same scenes. It has a lot of nice features like 32X FFWD and RWD. Also, 2X and 4X magnification. Not to mention DTS and Dolby Digital compatible. I just can't live with the skipping though. I guess with a lower price you compromise quality. Sticking with the larger name brands like Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, Toshiba, or Sharp seem like a much better and safer bet.

I was very pleased when I purchased this product, price, features, ease of use. After playing a few discs I made a horrible discovery, this thing skips at will. Instead of bringing it in for repairs, I brought it back to the store for a Toshiba model. $20.00 more, but no skips, not one. buyer beware.

A very nice budget DVD,

To be honest I have only had this DVD player for 2 days now but I really like it. The films I have watched are "End of Days" and "Sleepy Hollow" and it performed perfectly on both films. I did notice one minor skip while watching "End of Days" but the DVD player had been running for about four hours straight. No big deal if you ask me. All my friends have expensive DVD players and even they complain of skipping. If you want a decent player and are short on cash get this one!
