4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price . . . so far at least!
I just brought this home, so I can't give any long-term performance notes. These combo machines seem to have a collective bad record in that regard, so we'll see. That said, the cd-player sounds great, dvd's play fine, dvd-r's, vcd's and so on (tested those 3 so far), and the VCR is more responsive than our old Sharp standalone. You can pause, ff and rew with barely...

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok player for the price
Bought this unit for my bedroom to replace a vcr. Not a heavy use item so didnt want to spend too much. After many reviews I settled on this unit. Almost all the combo units I read about were similar in that not one stood out as really good, unless you wanted to spend hundreds of dollars. Bought the unit in June 05 and was impressed with the features for the price...

You can pause, ff and rew with barely a moments hesitation. You can hear the motor running softly, so if you're particular prone to hair-pulling if your electronics aren't whisper-quiet, then you may want to look elsewhere, but I wouldn't call it loud by any stretch of the imagination.

For the giveaway price I'm extremely satisfied and very happy to put the old VCR deck down in the basement. I bought it at Sears and paid an extra $15 for a two year full-replacement warranty, so you probably won't hear much squealing on my end if it suffers some sort of premature melt-down, but I'll keep folks posted in any case.

Bought this unit for my bedroom to replace a vcr. Not a heavy use item so didnt want to spend too much. After many reviews I settled on this unit. Almost all the combo units I read about were similar in that not one stood out as really good, unless you wanted to spend hundreds of dollars. Bought the unit in June 05 and was impressed with the features for the price. The remote wasnt very good, with dozens of small buttons all cramped onto a small area but for the infrequency of use, I didnt care too much.
Played DVD's and VCR tapes fine. Was fairly quiet so I was pleased.
Yesterday put in a dvd and out of the blue it said it couldnt read it. Tried the dvd in an older player I had and it started right up. So I fed several more dvd's into the samsung only to have them either take forever to load or not be able to read the disc. The discs were clean and scratch free. Also noticed some weird whirring noises on certain dvds that it couldnt read.
The unit only comes with a 90? day labor warranty and a 1 year parts. By the time I pay to ship it to a repair center and pay the labor to repair it, I figure I'll be into the unit at least 1/2 the purchase price
I guess its time again to look for another dvd player for the bedroom and I dont think I'll be looking at another Samsung. Will also try to find a unit with a stronger labor warranty.

3.0 out of 5 stars 2nd Samsung VCR/DVD Combo, October 10, 2005

This is my second Samsung VCR/DVD combo but I'm not sure I would buy another one. This time the first unit came with a VCR that was broken, Amazon was fantastic about returning it and sending another. Had new unit in a few days. This time everything worked okay. However it was not an easy setup and the manual left much to be desired. I guess for the cost it is okay but I think next time I will spend a little more to get something better.

I have purchased 2 of these. One stopped playing videotapes after about a year. The second stopped playing video on DVDs after about a year. Draw you own conclusions.

2.0 out of 5 stars DVD won't open if it enounters a lot of skipping., September 23, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The DVD deck acts strange when it has a skip in the DVD. The DVD freezes and won't respond to any action like skip chapter and pause and forward. If it gets a bad enough skipping, it will stop playing and nothing happens. I tried taking out the DVD from the tray, but it doesn't even open. I unplugged it and waited for 5 minutes and came back to plug it in. The DVD still won't come out. Very poor design in this aspect. The VCR, i haven't tried using it. But overall I give it a low 2 stars.

This was fine at first, but like other users here we also are now having problems with the DVD player part "freezing" DVDs often. Our other DVD player works with the same DVDs just fine, so I think it is the fault of the player.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Product..... for the first 3 months, January 1, 2006

This product stopped playing DVD's 95 days after purchase. Of course it has a 90 day parts and labor warranty. It just displays the "loading" screen for 10 minutes and then says "disc is unplayable" I'm still working on getting ahold of customer service.

The product description here is pretty slim so in case you were wondering... No, it does not play DVD-R/RW.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refurbished is most excellent!!!, April 17, 2006
This review is from: Samsung DVDV5500 DVD/VCR Combination Dual Deck (Electronics)
'Got this at refurbished price, and it's working like
a charm. I have absolutely no complaints. 'Been
running either the DVD or VHS part almost full time
since it arrived about a week ago, and the performance
has been stellar. Even works well on tracking very
old VHS tapes which would be probably better
placed in the bin. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars No-hassle DVD, August 2, 2005
This review is from: Samsung DVDV5500 DVD/VCR Combination Dual Deck (Electronics)
My husband and I both like this DVD because it was 1) easy to set up 2) has worked like a charm: no skips, no hesitation -- even played a rented DVD with "dings" on it! So far, we're happy.
