Samsung Camera widens its range even further with the Digimax L55W, a 5-megapixel, 4.8x optical zoom digital camera with wide angle capabilities. Many compact digital cameras have a 3x optical zoom; however, the Digimax L55W features a 4.8x optical zoom offering a focusing range of 28mm to 135mm (35mm equivalent). The 28mm wide-angle lens provides a far wider field of vision, allowing the shooter to capture sweeping landscapes or to fit a group of subjects into just one frame. Supporting both 28mm wide-angle and 4.8x telephoto zoom the L55W's powerful optics extend the range of options available to the photographer.

2.8-inch wide LCD
The Digimax L55W is also the world's first digital camera to feature a 2.8-inch LCD. The 2.8-inch LCD allows the shooter view in 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios. Colors are also represented better by the LCD's ability to reproduce 16.7-million true colors. The 2.8-inch LCD display of the Digimax L55W uses TMR (Transmissive with Micro Reflective) technology to maintain balanced light, even in bright outdoor environments. With a wide viewing angle of 160 degrees, the L55W provides improved image-viewing and sharing.

MPEG-4 movie recording
The Digimax L55W also features a faster response time, giving the shooter the ability catch even the most spontaneous moments. The camera's booting and shot-to-shot time are each just one second and the camera also offers continuous shooting at 2.5 frames per second. The powerful video capability of the Digimax L55W offers the user a "camcorder-like" experience. For more enhanced movie shooting, the L55W uses MPEG-4, the high-compression, high-quality video format, which can record for up to three to four times longer than the traditional video formats used in many other digital cameras. The Digimax L55W can even record more than one hour of high quality, VGA (640 x 480) video at 30 frames per second when using a 256 MB memory card. With VGA, the Digimax L55W provides a larger screen view and clearer video quality when played on an LCD or TV screen.

Movie stabilization
The Digimax L55W also has movie stabilization, which helps maintain steady recording of a subject by means of automatic detection and correction of lateral and vertical movements of the camera. The continuous video recording feature of the Digimax L55W, which is based on exclusive Samsung technology, allows you to pause and resume video recording as desired and merge those multiple movie clips into a single file at a later time. To resume recording, the shooter can simply press the Pause button. For easier editing of movies, the Digimax L55W allows the user to select and save only the desired part into a new file during playback. In addition, the L55W also allows you to capture a still image during video playback.

Easy charging system
With its Easy Charging System, the Digimax L55W recharges quickly and conveniently. A 24-pin portable charger comes with the camera, and an optional cradle can also be purchased for easier charging and data-transfer. Also, for the first time in digital cameras, an optional charger, which uses the USB port in a PC to charge the camera, can be bought by those who frequently use their PCs or notebooks during business travel. The Macro function of the L55W has also been improved, allowing users to capture a subject as close as 2 centimeters. The Auto macro mode means the camera will automatically detect the distance the user is trying to focus and will optimize the settings for macro mode instantly.

Special effects
The Digimax L55W also features several special effect functions that shooters can take advantage of. The special effect functions offered by the Digimax L55W are Color Effect, Highlight, Photo Frame, and Composite Shot. Color Effects include black and white, sepia, blue, red, and green. Highlight enables the shooter to emphasis a subject by putting its surroundings into soft focus; Composite Shot allows the user to divide a shooting scene into two to four segments and save them into a single file while Photo Frame allows the shooter choose from 9 different types of photo frames to add to an existing image.

Scene modes
The Digimax L55W also has various scene modes, helping the shooter capture the best images in a variety of settings. The 11 scene modes supported by the L55W are Night Scene, Portrait, Children, Landscape, Close-up, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach and Snow, and Text Recognition. In particular, Text Recognition is a feature that allows you to shoot documents such as books, papers, and magazines and then extract text from the image taken using the Digimax Reader text-recognition software, included with the camera.

PictBridge
The L55W also offers PictBridge technology, allowing users to connect the camera directly to a printer by using the supplied USB cable and output images right from the camera's internal memory or SD card. The shooter can even use the "Quick Print" button to print a desired photo immediately. In addition, the L55W provides a substantially faster transfer rate with USB 2.0 as compared to commonly used USB 1.1.

Memory
The Digimax L55W utilizes SD/MMC storage cards and is also equipped with 32 MB of built-in memory, which comes in handy when shooting without a memory card. The camera also provides various user-friendly functions such as My Set shot mode, which allows the users save customized shooting settings. The L55W also provides voice recording up to one hour, voice memo for adding a short voice message to a picture, and "One-touch Playback" for instant playback of an image.

The L55W also features an improved Graphic User Interface (GUI) that ensures faster and more seamless menu navigation. Menu settings can be accessed quickly and with ease, by using the camera's Move and Set functions.

Though the picture quality is not as good as my old Olympus, the wide angle capability is just what I needed. I also like the very small size and the ultra-convenient base that does both downloading and charging. Very happy.

My wife loves her camara. I have a regular 5.0 Kodack digital camara and she says it's a dinosaur compared to this one. It takes excellent pics and comes with everything you need, even a charging stand.
