Looking for ultimate flexibility and future readiness? Then you're looking for Samsung's SIR-TS360 high-definition DirecTV Receiver and HDTV tuner, an all-in-one set-top box offering unprecedented reception of all 18 ATSC over-air digital broadcasts formats, analog broadcasts (NTSC), as well as more than 225 channels of digital satellite programming from DirecTV. With it 7-day DirecTV Advanced Program Guide, selectable output formats, built-in games, and true videophile design, the SIR-TS360 is a great choice for HDTV content reception.

Other stand-out features of the SIR-TS360 include a DVI (digital video interface) with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) and complete remote operability: the unit is RS-232-capable and Crestron-approved. A guide-search function lets you scan program listings via the names of actors, movies, and other one-step search fields. A picture-in-guide window lets you continue watching a program while surfing the listings, or Samsung's Quick Guide will display listings one 30-minute time-slot at a time in an opaque overlay atop your program.

The SIR-TS360's 7-day Advanced Program Guide integrates both analog and digital signals for seamless switching between programs broadcast via satellite and via terrestrial antenna. The receiver/tuner, which features a bilingual user interface (English and Spanish), also lets you search available programming by keyword and schedule specific programs to watch (the receiver will power on and switch to the appropriate station at the appropriate time).

Consistent with the all-in-one theme, the SIR-TS360 offers selectable output formats, including 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i. This lets you optimize performance by matching the output to your digital television monitor's native resolution, whether you're using a plasma-, LCD-, DLP-, or CRT-based set. Additionally, the SIR-TS360 simultaneously outputs standard 480i composite-video, allowing a dual connection with an analog TV or standard VCR.

A full complement of audio/video inputs and outputs accommodate current and future devices. These include component-video (Y, Pb, Pr), RGB+HV (15-pin D-sub), DVI, composite-video, and S-video outputs, and 1 each optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs for Dolby Digital 5.1 passthrough to a compatible audio/video surround receiver and speaker system. The unit offers 1 each composite-video, component-video, and S-video inputs.

Samsung makes an optional RF remote (model SRC-S401RF/A) as well. You can use an RF remote jack and cable to operate the receiver when it's installed in a cabinet or in another room in your house.

Would just restart periodically going through the whole "BOOTING" process, which takes 3 to 5 minutes.

So if you can find one for cheap it might be worth checking out if you need a HD tuner for your T.V. It is odd that Samsung would create such a quirky product though.

My ts360 is great; there are lots of features in the menus to customize your use and appearance of the guide.

My ts360 is great; there are lots of features in the menus to customize your use and appearance of the guide. I use mine solely as an OTA receiver, and bought it second-hand. There were a few issues...

The first was, since it was stored away for a while by original owner, it would not power up right away. There was a constant clicking noise; no display. After letting it click away for a few hours, it came back to life. Then a "boot fail" error on the display. You can still bypass this by pressing 'select' to get to the menu to choose "no dish". The receiver resets itself, then works like a charm. I was so happy to get all my local digital/hd channels. BTW, both problems were solved by a little 'googling.'

The ts360 is easy to use, and the guide still provides you with almost all the info (times, descriptions, etc.) on programs found on the digital subchannels (18.1, 24.1, etc.). I've had no problems with it ever since I revived it.

I'm just going to give you my bottom line:

It works as advertised EXCEPT when the HD signal starts to go out. My particular system will HANG if signal is interrupted (say by bad weather), requiring me to reboot the unit.

My particular unit was very unreliable. Would just restart periodically going through the whole "BOOTING" process, which takes 3 to 5 minutes. Finally it just stopped working altogether with a "BOOT FAIL" message. While it did work, I thought that the user interface was pretty lackluster on par with a cable box from 5 years ago. They should have put more time in making it work better than include ridiculous 'circa 1980' video games buried down in the menus (like the one where the snake grows with every dot it goes over). Lame. Find a different one than this underperformer.

First of all, this unit isn't just a DirecTV receiver, its so much more! It's an upscaler, a video switcher, a DTV converter box, a video distribution box and more. Here is the unusual and exciting features of this receiver.

1. It has INPUTS, which means you can connect 1 of each of the following: An S-Video or Composite Video Source, A 480i/p Component Source, analog cable TV, a DirecTV dish (standard & HD), an ATSC over the air digital antenna...and all at the same time!

2. It has OUTPUTS, so you can connect a VGA Monitor or component Projector, an HDTV using the DVI Output (or use a DVI to HDMI adapter), a standard TV using the S-Video or Composite Video outputs...and all at the same time!

Suggested cool uses: Watch Satellite TV on a standard VGA monitor (LCD or CRT). Connect a Wii or other game system to a VGA monitor. Watch over the air free HDTV content on a projector and simultaneously on a standard non-HD TV in another room. Upscale a VCR, DVD or Laserdisc output to an HDTV or VGA monitor. I am using this receiver at home and at work as a switcher in combination with a Harmony remote and it works flawlessly!

If you only pay for Standard Definition TV from DirecTV and your picture looks milky and colorless on your new HDTV, you need one of these receivers...its standard def output looks as good as it gets! Plus, you can pull in free over the air DTV and it adds those channels in line with your Satellite channels on the onscreen guide.

As a bonus, you get some simple games you can play with your remote, a large front LCD display which shows channel, time, and current output resolution...plus Dolby Digital optical output.

I just ordered a 3rd receiver.
