I bought this phone along with a UWT SIM card for use on a trip to Italy. The only problem I had was the phone was set to German when I received it! And the instructions are very slight and won't tell you how to switch languages. Also, it comes with a charger with a European plug, so if you want to charge it before you leave the states, you'll need an adapter. I managed to charged the phone and switch to English before I left (google translations sure helped!). If this happens to you, here's how to change the language:
First, the keypad locks after a few seconds of inactivity - press the star key for a couple of seconds to unlock.
Second, push the "OK" key to get the menu.
Third, navigate to the lower right corner menu item and press "OK"
Fouth, scroll down to the 4th menu item and press "OK"
Fifth - the first item in the next menu is language - press "OK" and you should see "english" as one of the options - scroll down to "english" and press "OK" - that's it!
Other than this, the phone worked great while I was in Europe - call quality was fine, the battery lasted for several days, and the phone is small and light.

I received this phone as a gift from my girlfriend to take on an overseas trip. The phone worked great and when I was there I was able to save a lot of money by buying a local SIM card. The price of the phone was way paid off in comparison to the amount of money I saved on calls by getting local SIM.

As per the negative comment below, yes the phone is 900/1800 and will not work in the USA but if you check (and you should read the info of what you are buying before you do) under the product features the first two lines clearly says:

* This unlocked cell phone will NOT work on any USA Carries. Not all carrier features may be supported.
* Unlocked Dual-Band GSM cell phone compatible with 900/1800MHz frequencies plus GPRS/EDGE data capabilities (NOT FOR USA).

Great little phone and a super low price. Great buy!!! Totally recommend it for use overseas.

I recently went to the UK and Ireland. I brought along this phone (which doesn't work in the US). I purchased a SIM card for 10 Euro at one of the many mobile phone shops. They even installed it and activated it for me. Worked perfectly for keeping in touch with my friends and travel companions!

This phone is perfect. My daughter was heading to study abroad in Beirut. I ordered this from Amazon.com for here. She was very easily able to switch the setting on the phone from German to English and to pop in a pre-paid minutes card in Beirut. Now I can skype to this phone and it costs nothing on this end and very little for her, and she has a phone to use to talk and text with her friends there. I highly recommend this phone. Do not hesitate to buy it.

I bought this phone to use on a trip to Italy in July 2012. The phone came in a sealed box, brand new. The battery was partially charged and was able to turn it on upon arrival. As others have mentioned, it came set with German as the language. I had a co-worker who speaks German navigate to the menu and switch it to English. Once that was done, very easy to set to my preferences. Once I arrived in Rome, I found a Vodaphone store and got a pre-paid SIM card for 10 (included 5 of talk-time) and I was set to call from anywhere in Italy. Phone worked as expected. Made calls within Italy, and even called home in the USA for about 0,20/minute (incoming calls free). Can't beat that! As long as you're able to figure out how to change the language on the phone, this is a great deal.

REMEMBER: This phone's frequency is only for international use -- it will not pick up a signal in the USA, so you won't be able to try out calls before you leave on your trip.

This is now my cell phone for European trips. I'm planning on taking it with me next year when I go to the south of France. Saves on costs to call back home. I still use my iPhone on WiFi only to check email, Facebook, etc.

The phone stays charged for a very long time. I was in Italy for 2 weeks and charged it once. Also, be aware that the charger comes with a European plug, so you'll need an adapter to charge it up before you leave -- but obviously no adapter needed to charge in Europe.

We needed an inexpensive phone to use on our recent trip to the Philippines. This one worked out fine. We activated it with a Globe sim card upon arrival in PHL. We used the phone mostly for texting. We found the keyboard to be much quicker than our regular cell phones. The only problem we sometimes had difficulty accessing "s" on the keyboard. Voice communications were frequently choppy. We weren't sure if that was the phone or the cell service we encountered. Annoying, but not so bad we could not communicate. All in all, we are happy with the purchase and plan to use the phone on future trips. The Dual-Band GSM 900/1800MHz frequencies are used most places in the world except USA, Mexico, Canada. We were amused to see that a bank in Manila was giving this phone away for free if you opened a new account.

Just got back from Ireland yesterday, and one of the first things I'm doing is reviewing this phone. Had big questions about it working never using an overseas phone before, so I got a Verizon temporary international calling plan for my iphone as a backup. All I got with the iphone was "searching"... that was it... nothing. The first day in Dublin I walked past a hole in the wall phone accessories shop and bought an O2 sim card for about 15 euros. Can't recall the per minute rate unfortunately, but five Euros seemed to get me about 10-12 minutes of outgoing calls. I believe incoming calls were about 25 cents/minute.

Calls to US were crisp and clear like any other call... just dialed 00 for the country code, then 1, area code and number. Needed LOTS of unexpected calling to cancel hotels and make new reservations... check on flight status... check with car rental company... call B&B's that we couldn't find with GPS.

Absolute perfectly functioning life-saver!!!

At the end of 9 days the battery had not even lost one "bar" of power... still full charge. I did power down whenever I was not using the phone, except for a few instances when return calls were immediately expected.

The trickiest part was switching language to English... phone is set for German. There is a review somewhere here that explains how to do it and that saved me... although it took me many tries of following the detailed instructions to get it... still kinda tricky.

If you can get to English instructions you'll have a GREAT phone!
