Product Description

850 Pro Main

The next leading SSD for performance, endurance and energy efficiency

850 Pro Product image
Samsung Solide State Drive 850 Pro 2.5 inch SATA III
  • The World's First Consumer 3D V-NAND SSD
  • Ultimate Read/Write Performance
  • Enhanced Endurance and Reliability
  • Efficient Power Management

From the Manufacturer

The world's first 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) SSD- the Samsung SSD 850 Pro

The Samsung 850 PRO SSD redefines storage with the world’s first drive based on 3D VNAND flash, offering exceptional read/write performance, reliability and power management efficiency. The 850 Pro delivers up to 2x the speed, density and endurance of conventional flash.

What is V-NAND and how does it differ from existing technology?

Samsung's flash memory is fabricated using an innovative 3D V-NAND architecture, which stacks 32 cell layers on top of one another. The result is higher density and higher performance using a smaller footprint and a breakthrough in overcoming the density limits of conventional planar NAND.

Boost performance with an industry-leading 3D VNAND SSD

Powered by Samsung's cutting-edge 3D V-NAND technology, the NAND flash memory delivers class-leading read and write performance for both sequential and random workloads.

An SSD that won't quit before you do

With twice the endurance of the previous model*, the 850 PRO will keep working as long as you do. Samsung's V-NAND technology is built to handle a minimum of 150 Terabytes Written (TBW) over the lifetime of the drive, which equates to a 40 GB daily read/write workload over a 10-year period. Plus, it comes with the industry's top-level ten-year limited warranty.

*840 PRO: 73 TBW > 850 PRO: 150 TBW

Work longer with high-efficiency innovation

The efficient design of the 850 PRO enables you work longer and more productively. Boasting the lowest power consumption of any SSD when in full use, the 850 PRO uses less energy (need source) while maintaining class-leading performance. The 850 PRO fully supports Device Sleep mode for Ultrabook, consuming only 2 milliwats (2mw) of power in its ultra low power state.

Plus, its low power DDR2 cache memory provides high performance while consuming up to 30 percent less power when active and up to 93 percent less power when idle than typical DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

Safeguard precious data without sacrificing performance

Protect your PCs hardware and personal data when you take your laptop on the road with the 850 PRO's Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) technology. The drive includes an AES-256-bit hardware-based, full disk encryption engine that secures your data without the performance loss often experienced with software-based encryption. The 850 PRO's advanced security complies with the TCG Opal v2.0 standard and is compatible with the Microsoft eDrive IEEE 1667 protocol. Plus, you can quickly erase data or sanitize your drive with the crypto erase feature.

And super fast.

This is clearly indicated by the fact that Samsung warranties the drive for a lifetime total of 150TB, whereas Sandisk warranties for 80TB.

The smaller capacity models are actually pretty competitively priced.

I just wrote a long review of the Sandisk Extreme Pro 480GB, which I bought 2 of just before this model was released. I've now had two of these for about a week and I thought I'd compare them, because until these become available the Sandisks were what I was buying for performance.

First, I haven't done a controlled performance test of these drives. However, if you check some of the good review sites (like anandtech dot com) and others, you'll find that the tested performance is almost identical. They are both very fine drives, and both have 10-yr warranties, which is a marketing issue, as you're unlikely to be using this in 10 years any way.

At this point, I will continue to buy this one rather than the equivalent Sandisk Extreme Pro. First, it has more space as Samsung allows the entire 512GB to be used, whereas Sandisk only allows 480GB as they are reserving the difference for 'over-provisioning' whereby they have spare sectors to be used when (as happens with all SSD's) sectors fail with use.

More importantly, Samsung's use of V-NAND indicates that the transistors (which are very different and what appears to be a huge leap forward) are more resistant to wear. This is clearly indicated by the fact that Samsung warranties the drive for a lifetime total of 150TB, whereas Sandisk warranties for 80TB. And this is important, as the 10-yr warranty means nothing if you exceed their total.

having said that, techreport dot com is in the midst of a months-log torture test of drives and even the ones to fail first have vastly exceeded the manufacturer's expected limits, in a way that has surprised the heck out of everyone. So the bottom line is that even if 'used hard' as consumer drives, it's unlikely that either one will ever fail to perform well and long.

If you're looking for a new SATA SSD and can afford it, this is the one to choose.
+ blisteringly fast reads & writes in every environment (random, sequential, small and large chunks)
+ unparalleled high and sustained write consistency across time, conditioned on overprovisioning (see below)
+ best warranty in the market: 10 years or 150TB writes, whichever comes first
+/- reasonably priced, except for the $700 1TB model (yikes!)

This thing is ridiculously fast. If you've never used a solid state system drive before, then prepare yourself for a huge treat. It's a categorical difference in system performance compared to a spinning disk. For the rest of us that have been fiddling with SSDs for years, you are accustomed to this class of data storage device. I can't say that this drive is worth it if you already have an SSD manufactured in the last couple years. However, if you are in the market for a new SSD and you can afford this one, your search stops here. Aside from price of the 1TB version, there is nothing to criticize about this drive. The smaller capacity models are actually pretty competitively priced. It does a great job as a fast read cache when paired with spinning disk array. It handles the churn of the workstation environment without a hiccup. Perhaps most importantly, its throughput is consistent over time and load, so long as it's highly (>25%) overprovisioned. It can keep up with my write requests over hours of gigs being written down, ensuring I never lose a bit of data being pushed. It is the current market leader in performance and consistency. Samsung did a good job with their earlier

Got this device instead of a new laptop. The issue with most computers is not processor speed its usually I/O bandwidth. Today's had drives are very fast and large, but processors are incredibly fast. My laptop is an I5. Heavy disk intensive applications run the hard drive at 100%. Because the processor is starved for data, it seldom ran at over 17%. Once I put in this SSD (even though my disk interface is SATA3) things changed dramatically. Now that disk intensive application is CPU intensive. Instead of 17% CPU, its running 98-100% and the drive is running at 100% which means its a very good match.

While the SSD draws much less power, the CPU draws a lot more, so I'm not sure the battery will last longer, but the bit thing is work is accomplished faster than ever. (If CPU loading is any measure, and it is, tasks are now 5 times faster with this SSD as an HD).

Therefore if you are doing things that are slow, sluggish, or just time consuming, get ready for a huge improvement. I was about to shell out $1600 for a new laptop. This SSD is like a shot of B-12, two cups of coffee, after a good nights sleep!

My old i5 is snappy, boots in seconds, and runs at 100% CPU speed most of the time. It just doesn't get any better! If you have work to do and you need your data and programs moving around in your system at warp speed a large SSD is the way to go. As for the install and software, it all worked without a hitch, but moving the files to the SSD took hours. Turns out it does a comprehensive file transfer, not a disk clone. It took about 5 hours to clone my system drive on the SSD. Once cloned, I swapped the SSD for the HD and and rebooted, to begin the magic.

I believe a Sata 6 interface and this drive would be a good combination for an i7, but at this point, the i5 is so fast when properly fed data, I doubt I'll be upgrading for another 2 years.
