I recently read about the Evoca 140 in Popular Photo. This camera recently won the 1999 European Compact Camera of the Year Award.

I have been shooting pictures for about a month. It is the best camera I ever picked up in my hands. Every thing it said in the article was true. The 140mm lens bring you 4x closer to the subject. The camera also has a Scheinder...

Based on the two other sterling reviews and the recommendation of a local camera store, I purchased the Evoca 140S in August. I hesitated because after reading reviews for other Samsung models, I read two very different viewpoints...the camera was fantastic, or the camera was a piece of junk.

After having the camera for less than two months, the red eye reduction and...

I have been shooting pictures for about a month. It is the best camera I ever picked up in my hands. Every thing it said in the article was true. The 140mm lens bring you 4x closer to the subject. The camera also has a Scheinder Kreuznach lens, (High End German Optics) that are not found in any other camera like it.

It would recommend this camera to both first time buyers as well as advance photographers

5.0 out of 5 stars My SLR is jealous, May 9, 2000
This review is from: Samsung Evoca 140S QD Zoom Date 35mm Camera (Electronics)
Since getting this little gem I haven't touched my SLR. I take the EVOCA 140s with me everywhere. It is so lightweight and portable there is no reason to leave it at home. While I do miss some of the manual functions of my SLR, I don't miss the hassle of toting its bulk. With the EVOCA 140s I no longer have to sacrifice quality for convenience. The lens is the thing. The EVOCA 140s is equipped with a Schneider Kreuznach lens. The high end optics provide stunning results. You get clear, sharp images at every focal length (38 - 140 mm). There is an automatic macro setting when a subject is within 1m. The multitude of flash options and camera functions makes the EVOCA 140s one of the most versatile point and shoots on the market. I have taken pictures in all types of lighting conditions and have yet to stump the camera. The clear, concise manual (written in Spanish and English) has all of the information you need and is full of suggestions to help you get the best results from your camera. I used to carry the manual with me as a quick reference. After experimenting with a few rolls, the camera functions became intuitive. I find it increasingly difficult to take a bad picture. A remote control for the EVOCA 140s is sold separately. Operating instructions for the remote as well as a toll free order number can be found in the manual. The remote is a fun little gadget, but really isn't necessary given all of the camera's self timing functions. There are a couple of minor drawbacks to the EVOCA 140s. A very flimsy, plastic shutter covers the lens. Such a valuable lens deserves better protection. The battery life is short. Even though it is impossible to accidentally leave the camera on (it closes down if no action has taken place within a 30 second interval) the power is drained after only 15 or 20 rolls. Minor flaws aside; versatility, convenience and quality make the EVOCA 140s an excellent photographic tool for the amateur and professional alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Pictures, September 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung Evoca 140S QD Zoom Date 35mm Camera (Electronics)
We thought our old Nikon 35mm took sharp pictures, but this Samsung is amazing, the "HDTV" of film photography! We had been soured on zoom cameras when we purchased the #1 consumer reports zoom (a Yashica) a couple of years ago and could never get consistently sharp pictures. As another reviewer indicated, the autofocus on this camera seems to never miss -- consistently sharp pictures from 38 to 140mm. In fact, the pictures are almost too sharp -- the gray hairs show up and my wife has said she will start having to wear makeup. An added plus -- Samsung provides excellent customer service. Very satisfied with this purchase.

I don't know how the camera will hold up in the long run but we just got back from Las Vegas and the photos that were taken with this camera were just beautiful. Extremely sharp, great (hand held) night photos, colours were great. We are extremely pleased with the results and hope the camera will be with us for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars My take on this camera, February 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung Evoca 140S QD Zoom Date 35mm Camera (Electronics)
May I recommend that the user, who complained about the red-eye effect not working, tha he / she checks the camera setting? If it is not on the regular -A- setting, red eye feature doesn't work. Other settings include sports, landscape and etc.. (One good thing about this camera is its multi-functions and features, which can be bad for people who get confused and frustrated easily - I am one of them)

I can understand the frustration of the buyer who gave one star because of poor reliability. I have experienced similar cases in the past when buying electronics, but not with this camera. It has been money-well-spent and the first battery I put in, it lasted more than two years (I took at least more than 300 shots with the first battery). If you have more money, I recommend Evoca 170 which gives you more range.

This camera has many features that others don't.The price is reasonable and the camera is very appealing to the eye.The only thing I don't like about the camera is when the film is advancing it's a bit too loud. Other than that I love this camera.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung Evoca 140S QD Zoom Date 35mm Camera (Electronics)
Based on the two other sterling reviews and the recommendation of a local camera store, I purchased the Evoca 140S in August. I hesitated because after reading reviews for other Samsung models, I read two very different viewpoints...the camera was fantastic, or the camera was a piece of junk.

After having the camera for less than two months, the red eye reduction and the back light feature stopped working today. When the camera worked the pictures were fairly good. However, I've now spent over $... (with shipping) for a camera that is already defective. I wish I'd purchased it from a local store, because at least (with many stores) I could return it. I will now have to deal directly with Samsung, reputed to have horrible customer service.

I hope anybody considering buying a Samsung camera will listen to my experience, as well as that of other Samsung purchasers (Amazon reviews....other models.) I had a Samsung vcr break within the first year, and between that and the other negative reviews I thought "no way will I buy a Samsung"...but then the praise for this model (and the lack of negative reviews) changed my mind....I consider that my $... mistake.

P.S. the motor is very loud when loading, advancing or rewinding. This would be a problem if you needed to take pictures in a quiet situation.

Update: 6/03: after getting the camera fixed at our expense (Samsung Customer service never responded or helped), it has worked fine but I would like to point out one other drawback. In automatic mode, the flash takes a full 10 seconds to recharge. 10 seconds feels like forever when a posed group is waiting for you to take a second picture, or if you're in a situation where the action doesn't wait for you (indoors graduation last week)....even with 800 speed film I had to wait 10 seconds...I'm sure that somebody proficient in cameras would know a way around this, but for the average person who wants a "point and shoot" camera with zoom capacity, it's a huge drawback. For this reason alone, if I could do it over I'd buy a different camera.
