Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Samsung combined the latest technology with top-quality German glass to create the stylish Evoca 170SE 35 mm compact camera. The Schneider-Kreuznach Varioplan 38-170 mm auto macro lens zooms in and out at 10 millimeter increments with impressive speed. Fully automatic, its six different modes are easily adjusted using the mode dial switch on top of the camera, similar to dials often found on digital cameras. The various modes include fully automatic snap shooting for active subjects, portrait zoom, which maintains a constant subject size within the frame, continuous shooting for photos in sequence, spot shooting for one subject in a crowd, and landscape shooting for focus set to infinity.

An LCD on top of the camera allows you to see which mode the camera is set to as well as how many exposures are left on the roll, current measurement of the zoom, flash setting, and if the self-timer has been turned on. There is a separate panorama switch between the zoom button and the diopter that narrows the picture area within the diopter when set. Loading film is extremely simple, and the roll automatically rewinds when finished. If you depress the shutter button halfway down, a blinking green light will turn on when your subject is in focus. The macro mode sets automatically if the subject is within about 4 feet or closer.

The Evoca 170SE has an attractive look and feel overall, although some may find it slightly bulky. The stylish front of the camera is a metallic silver, but be warned that the backing is gray plastic. It comes with its own camera case and is powered by one 3 volt lithium battery. We recommend it for its intelligent design and powerful zoom.

Pros:

  • Speedy, high-quality zoom lens
  • Easy-to-use mode dial with innovative settings
  • Separate panorama switch
  • Adjustable diopter with panorama framing
  • Macro capabilities

Cons:

  • Plastic backing not as sturdy as metallic front
  • Slightly bulky
  • Noisy zoom

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice little camera, October 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung Evoca 170SE Zoom 35mm Camera (Electronics)
I recently bought this camera to take with me on those occasions that my SLR is too heavy or bulky - hiking, amusement parks, etc. I find that it takes excellent photos under most circumstances - indoors and out, stationary subjects and moving ones. I haven't figured out all the buttons yet, or when is the best time to which modes, but it seems to have the full range of capabilities. It is a tad expensive, but, if you want the extended zoom range, it's definitely worth it. I took pictures of a black puppy in his white dog bed, and the dog came out very clear; you could see the individual hairs on his head!

4.0 out of 5 stars From a first-time "real" camera owner, December 30, 2000

I required what I termed an "idiot" camera cause I am just so close to being an "idiot" with cameras. When I bought this camera, I was really quite pleasantly surprised with the results. The excellence of the lens made my pictures quite sharp. Can't use this camera for night pictures even with the 400 speed film unless there are lots of lights around. Went to New Orleans and those pictures were clear and fantastic. I'm not a camera buff nor do I have lots of experience with picture taking but I impressed myself! I intend for this camera to last me for years and I understand it to have one of the better warranty terms - 3 years. Just a word of note cause I didn't get a chance to read it before my trip -- READ THE MANUAL! :)
