I took the unit back to Costco and exchanged it for another one of the same model.

I bought the Samsung (BD-EM57c) Blu-Ray player with Smart Hub at Costco on February 25, 2012 for $99,99. I've seen it at $130.00 at Best Buy. At that price with built in Wi-Fi I thought it was a great deal. I've had Samsung TV's for more than 10 years and have been very satisfied with it. I've also had a good experience with the DVD players; well except for a DVD recorder (DVD-R130) which I bought to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD. The DVD's would play on the recorder but would not play properly on other DVD players, even Samsung ones. Since the DVD-R130 wouldn't last the rest of my life I scrapped the project and I wasted $150.00. I had bought it at Sears, be sure to buy from a store like Costco that easily takes returns if you are not satisfied.

Back to the BD-EM57C, at first this product worked very well. It makes a clunky noise when the DVD or Blu-Ray starts and the menu in the smart hub is very slow. When you press the button on the remote you have to wait a second for what would be the cursor to move. For instance when you are entering your name you have to enter f, then wait then r, then wait...

I was able to see a couple of movies on Vudu. The unit comes with a $5.99 credit, which was great. Unfortunately about three weeks ago on a Friday night the unit said it needed to update. It doesn't give you a choice to say no. I was going to watch a movie the night it decided to update. My whole evening was spent waiting for the updates. I've had more than such evening with this device since then. It would just keep updating and getting stuck on "installing". On Saturday night I called Samsung and was told to power cycle the unit. This requires you unplugging the unit's electrical outlet.

Picture quality is excellent, but there are some quirks with this player. I also had difficulty with the player getting "stuck" when it appeared to be trying to update and install new firmware, leaving me unable to use Netflix. Samsung online chat was excellent, and was able to quickly help me identify that my wireless router firewall was creating that problem. I was able to reconfigure my router and it now works great.

Problem has returned. Will be returning to BJ's tomorrow

Had trouble installing Smart Hub and had to go to Samsung's on-line customer service. Had to reset the entire machine and start over again. Even after that the word "installing" kept coming up after the Smart Hub button was pressed on the remote. After looking at other reviews, I realised I was not the only one having this problem. Would not recommend to others.

I purchased the Samsung BD-57 and went through setup, everything went smoothly until after the Smart Hub setup the initial 14 apps. All the apps worked except Netflix. I tried it several times and it failed. After repowering in order the cable modem and router and then the player, nothing changed so I decided to chat with the Samsung service tech. After much discussion about all I had tried, I asked if adding a flash disk to the usb port would allow more memory to the apps, he said it would. I added a 2gb and everything has worked great since. I made a recommendation to the tech guy to tell their design people to add more memory to their systems AND to tell their packaging people to add a note of this design flaw in the installation notes.

I bought a new Samsung blueray BD-EM57 player at Walmart for $108. When I installed it, Vudu and Netflix, FaceBook worked perfectly; however, Pandora, a free music service would not load not matter how many times I tried. I went to Samsung online tech support - utter idiots - they suggested I turn the machine off and re-set it. Tried that, Pandora still did not work. Tech guy did not know how to fix problem, and like other reviews suggested I turn off my firewall - we don't have one. So I have e-mailed Pandora to see if they can fix the problem.

So far, some apps are working. Will check back in a few weeks and let you know if they still are!

ETA: Two days later and I am taking the device back. Why? As other reviewers have said, this machine has so many bugs in it. Everytime I turn it on, it downloads an update that freezes or disables the whole thing. I finally got Pandora to run (Pandora helped me fix that, not Samsung Customer Service). While I am still able to get Vudu, Netflix is acting wonky. I will return and get a regular blu ray player.

Wish I had seen all the other reviews. Picked this up from Costco and will return to Costco tomorrow as Samsung online service support has no clue and keeps asking me to wait for hours, days and probably weeks if I believe them. Smart Hub never worked from day 1, which renders this thing as useful as a $30 DVD player.

Bought it for the ability to use netflix. It rarely works properly and crashes all the time. The Blue ray works but it terribly slow. If you want to rewind just a second and hit play...well it just keeps going for another five seconds before it finally stops and plays again. Would not recommend this product to anyone. This is the first time I have truly considered throwing something this expensive out and just consider it a sunk cost....I just haven't seen too many other good reviews for an alternative outside of a 1000 dollar Oppo player.
