The only misleading thing about this device is that it is called a "Player". It is actually a fully functional perfectly sized go-anywhere in your pocket durable mini-tablet. I've owned it for several months, purchased it from Amazon as a refurbished unit, it works perfectly. Does everything a tablet does, but in a more convenient size. It handles all the software and games that the larger tables handle, but does not require a woman's purse to haul around. The WIFI is quick, videos and pictures are sharp and clear. Even voice commands are amazing intelligent. For example, it actually understands the command "Find CVS in Enfield" when I speak that command in normal conversation. ( Works better than Dragon-Speak which I am using to type this review )

It's an entry level android device (by today's standards): Single core processor, medium resolution screen, good battery.

If you're looking for a high end gaming device, this is not it. It can't keep up with a galaxy S2 much less an S3/S4. It is however good for watching movies, youtube, email, music, etc. Do not confuse it with a phone. It's a media player (it can do calls over skype but it requires wi-fi to accomplish this).

I can't use a cell phone for most of the day, so I haven't gotten a smart phone yet. Back in the day I would use a Palm Pilot to keep my calendar, take notes and that sort of thing. This fits that role for me. I use it for everything. For my commute, I listen to podcasts on it. At home I use it to keep up with my e-mail or play some games. All the Google play apps are available for it. With the right apps it even works as a turn by turn GPS unit. Great product and since it has a huge screen, my old eyes can clearly see everything.

I purchased this mp3 player after my 4th gen pod touch gave up on me, I was going to go ahead and buy a 5th gen iPod touch to replace it, then I started to look at possible alternatives and I stumbled across this little gem, on paper the iPod looks like the superior product, and I know that all the apple fan-boys will agree with me, I found that after going to a brick and mortar store and comparing the 2 side by side right in front of me, I decided that the Samsung galaxy 5.0 was a better fit for me. And for a multitude of reasons, one of my biggest was iTunes, I loathe that program and got to the point that I didn't want to use it for anything and never updated my iPod, the other obvious advantage the Samsung had was the 5 inch screen, which is fantastic. I also enjoy the gingerbread operating system, but beware unless you want to get into rooting your device, you will be stuck with this OS, which for what I use this for will suit me just fine, a couple of other features of the Samsung unit also swayed me, The expandable memory option, one thing I wish the iPod had, I found a 32gig class 4 micro SD on sale for a little under $20, and I quadrupled the memory capacity of this device, I also like the camera interface on this much more than the one on the Ipod, don't get me wrong, the iPod is a fantastic product, and I never regret that purchase, but now that I've made the switch to an android device, I don't think I will be going back to IOS.

I own 2 laptops, 2 desktops (loaded), an Asus T700 tablet, and iPod Classic (160 GB hard drive) and this, the Samsung. Of all the hardware I own I probably use this more than anything else. Twice a week I have to go into the hospital for an average of about 5 hours; the hospital also has free public WIFI. I used to bring in a laptop and the iPod classic (if I didn't want to deal with anything the weight of a laptop). While that weight might not seem like much to most people, I have about a year left so even things that most people find light-as-a-feather weigh a ton to me.

That's where the Samsung Galaxy Player comes in. This player handles EVERYTHING I've thrown at it from music to movies to viewing with my Amazon Prime membership. Ridiculous as this sounds,,,YEAH AMAZON! As Adobe pulls flash support off more and more tablets and players like this, it took trying out just 2 applications from the Google Play Store (YEAH GOOGLE) to find both players could play flash flawlessly...oh, and both players are free.

The screen is 5 inches as the description states. While it may not be an Apple Retina screen, the picture is clear as day (and as my body is starting to slowly shut down, my vision is going). But like I said, the picture is amazing. It supports pinch and zoom in any application designed to use this function. I would recommend getting a transparent screen protector or just carry a small piece of microfiber cloth as the screen does pick up fingerprints quickly no matter how clean your hands are,

All in all, one of the best purchases I've made in years.

The other reviews cover all the radical features of this device, so I'll just comment on the GPS capabilities. This is the main reason I bought it. I sold my Delorme and Garmin GPS units and purchased the 5.0 player. I downloaded the Backcountry Navigator Pro app ($9.99) and use the Galaxy 5.0 as my only GPS unit for hunting, hiking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and backcountry skiing in the Rockies. With the BNP app, it works better than both my Delorme and Garmin units in pinpointing my location and tracking my progress. Through the BNP app, I pre-download aerial photos and topo maps (for free) before venturing into the woods, and it works great.
I guess the only downside to using the Galaxy 5.0 as a GPS compared to Delorme/Garmin GPS units is that it is not waterproof and the battery is not replaceable (only an issue if I'm doing multi-day trips). But for day trips, I can have the GPS function turned on for 10-12 hours, and the battery is only about 50% drained. Typically, I will only turn on the GPS function when I need to know my location, then turn off the function (but leave the device on) and keep going. This way the battery usage is negligible.
The device has a huge screen which is great for viewing topo maps, but it is slim and light enough that I don't really notice it in my pocket when hiking.
Overall, I am glad I sold my GPS units and bought the Galaxy 5.0. I also highly recommend the Backcountry Navigator Pro App (the Google app included with the Galaxy is crap and does not work well without a Wi-fi signal).

Pros: Bought one of these refurbished for my 10 year old son. I read a terrible review on Cnet and man is it wrong. This is not a tablet but can act like one and it is not a phone, but can act as one with the right app. It is a great Kindle or Nook with ereader apps. It has expandable memory unlike a Kindle Fire or Apple anything. It will still fit in your pocket. The screen is great and not grainy at all. It is very similar to a Galaxy S 2. Video play back is better than any of the similar priced iPod touches because of the larger screen. The camera is very good as well. If you are tired of iTunes problems, this is your device. You plug it in and it becomes a hard drive and you drop your music on. No crazy iTunes and I have 5 Apple products in my house. I love my iPad. I hate iTunes and the whole restoring your iPod errors that my kids experience.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is a great player and is not a true tablet or phone and should not be compared to either, yet it can function as a tablet, movie player or even as a phone. Plus, it is a great gaming device and best of all, no iTunes to mess with. Set it as a mass storage device and off it goes. Also, It is a great ereader. FYI,the CPU is single core but plenty fast. The video gpu is faster than the iPod 4's. If you like Galaxy Phones you will like this a lot. I am not sure what motivated the Cnet review I read, but it was terrible.

I've had the Samsung Galaxy Player 5 for a couple months and love it. The huge screen is great for watching YouTube videos and typing out blind passwords. I'm a big guy with big fingers that tend to hit 2 keys at once on small virtual keyboards like on my iPod Touch 2G. That's not a problem on this Galaxy Player when I turn it on it's side.

I also like the rear camera on this device. There's a little light for it that helps clear up pictures or video. The front facing camera is good for video chats.

Oh, and I like how it is small enough to put it in my pants pocket unlike tablets. And the ability to put a 32 GB micro SD card in this is a plus. I have no problem taking my 16 GB of mp3 music everywhere. Plus the speakers on this thing are top notch...I put a nice case on this and a screen protector and now I can just turn it over and listen to the speaker in the back rather than plugging in external speakers like on my iPod Touch. It does have a headphone jack if you wanna plug in, though. My car radio has been messed up for a couple months now, but I just take this media player in the car and listen to it...it has a great sound!

The battery on the Galaxy Player 5 is excellent. It easily lasts all day and usually charges within an hour.

This is also great as an e-reader. I put the OverDrive Media app on it and read library books on it all the time with ease.

Combine it with a Clear 4G USB modem and a Cradlepoint CTR35 router & u got a mobile 4G device at $35/mo to Clear with unlimited data. I would definitely recommend this to somebody that doesn't wanna pay exorbitant monthly bills for a smartphone and yet still be able to use the smartphone apps in a wifi setting :)
